Hulu viewers miss Oscars climax in latest mishap for streaming platforms' live programming
NEW YORK — Sunday night marked Hulu's first time airing the Oscars live. But its Academy Awards debut ended on a chaotic and frustratingly premature note.
Hulu's livestream cut off in the final moments of the show — with two major award categories, best actress and best picture, still to be announced because of a scheduling system issue. Those viewing the awards ceremony on Hulu instead saw an error code message that stated the event was over.
Viewer outrage, predictably, ensued online. Fans, including those throwing Oscar-viewing parties, eagerly await the final, pivotal moments of Hollywood's biggest night. Hulu viewers missed Mikey Madison and 'Anora' win the night's titles for both best actress and best picture in real time.

The Hulu stream also had a rough start, with a few users reporting issues logging on to the platform due to another technical problem. For some, that meant missing the show's musical intro performed by 'Wicked' stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
Disney, which has run Hulu since 2019, apologized to viewers.
'Yesterday evening, we experienced technical and live stream issues on Hulu which impacted some Oscars viewers,' the company wrote in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Monday. 'We apologize for the experience.'
Disney added that a 'full replay' of the event is now available on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+, the streamers' bundled offering. That replay includes the final moments of Sunday night's show.
Hulu's foray into the Oscars arrives as more streaming platforms are betting big on live programming of prominent events — from a handful of awards shows and pop culture moments, to major sports matchups like the Super Bowl.
But some have gone smoother than others. And Hulu's stumble on Sunday was not the first among similar endeavors from today's biggest streaming platforms.
Netflix users, for example, expressed frustrations with streaming and buffering problems before and during November's widely-watched, livestream fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul. And in 2023, the platform's 'Love Is Blind' fans also saw a lengthy delay ahead of a reunion special originally set to air live. Meanwhile, CBS All Access, now Paramount+, reportedly crashed for many viewers at the start of the 2021 Super Bowl.
And in the earlier days of streaming, Hulu's more-expensive live TV service also cut off early for certain users in the final minutes of the 2018 Super Bowl — with the streamer citing a technical issue that it said impacted some of its feeds from NBC. 'While the interruption could not have come at a more important time, we are confident we can prevent this in the future,' Hulu Support wrote on social media at the time.
While the Super Bowl bounces around between broadcast and streaming homes each year, the Oscars have aired on ABC for decades. The network's contract with the Academy currently runs through 2028, a year that will mark the Oscars' 100th anniversary.
Sunday marked the first time cord cutters could watch through standard Hulu plans, but subscribers of Hulu Live TV have been able to tune into the awards show in years past. The show has also continued to be available on other services offering live streaming of ABC, such as YouTubeTV, AT&T TV and FuboTV.

With families flocking to the familiar face of the dragon Toothless on the big screen, Pixar's 'Elio' is having a harder time drumming up interest as an original animated film with just $9 million earned on its opening day from 3,750 theaters. As a result, its $20 million estimated opening weekend has passed the $29.6 million opening of 'Elemental' for the lowest opening ever for a Pixar film. If this result holds, 'Elio' would have a lower opening weekend than the $22 million that last year's 'Inside Out 2' made in just its first Monday in U.S. theaters following its $154.2 million opening weekend. While Disney was hoping for an opening closer to what 'Elemental' earned, the poor start of that film followed by its lengthy box office run has prepared them and theaters for the possibility of a rebound for 'Elio.' And the good news is that like 'Elemental,' reception for 'Elio' has been very strong with an 85% Rotten Tomatoes score and an A from audiences on CinemaScore. For Disney, the hope now is that this strong audience buzz will reach the ears of audiences who either don't have 'Elio' on their movie radar or went to go see 'How to Train Your Dragon' first will come back around to see this original film based on its word-of-mouth, particularly during Fourth of July weekend. Things are looking better for '28 Years Later,' Sony/Columbia's legacyquel to Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's famed 2002 horror film '28 Days Later.' The $30-31 million start is consistent with pre-release box office tracking and puts it on pace for a decent theatrical run against its $60 million budget. The bigger question is whether this film will drum up enough sustained interest for Boyle and Garland to turn it into a trilogy. The second installment, '28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,' is set to come out this winter, but the third film has yet to be greenlit. While critics have praised the film with a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score, its more cerebral nature and unexpected tonal shifts have left audiences mixed with a 66% RT audience score and a B on CinemaScore. Whether that causes its theatrical run to be more frontloaded remains to be seen. Tom Brady Captures Another Title, Wins Inaugural Fanatics Games and $1M Prize
Tom Brady is a champion once again. The seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback won the inaugural Fanatics Games at this weekend's Fanatics Fest in New York, earning him a $1 million prize. The all-time great was among 100 celebrities, athletes and fans to compete in the Fantatics Games, which consisted of eight competitions. The eight competitions consisted of activities from different sports, such as quarterback skills, basketball shooting, soccer goal-scoring and baseball pitching accuracy, among other competitions. One of the other competitions was a WWE Superstar entrance. In his WWE Superstar entrance, Brady spat on New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner jersey and ripped former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning's jersey. Manning later interrupted his entrance, jumping on top of him. That entrance helped Brady earn 399.1 total points in the Fanatics Games. Manning was also one of the athletes who participated, finishing in fifth with 314.5 total points as Brady was able to get some revenge over the quarterback who defeated him in two Super Bowls. Brady, a FOX Sports employee, collected his $1 million prize at the Javits Center on Sunday. However, he awarded $5,000 to each of the 50 fans who participated in the Fanatics Games, while the rest of that money will go to charity. Brady's participation in the Fanatics Games was just one of the few viral moments he had from Fanatics Fest over the weekend. On Friday, he struggled to pick out the real Rob Gronkowski in a group of 20 people dressed like his former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers teammate. On Saturday, Brady joined LeBron James, Victor Wembanyama, streamer Kai Cenat and Maverick Carter for a live taping of "The Shop." "He's always done things the right way. He's always risen above all the noise and BS and continued to deliver," Brady said of James as he sat next to the Los Angeles Lakers star. "So you're witnessing the greatest ever, and I hope you guys will appreciate that." As for the other participants in the Fanatics Games, UFC fighter Justin Gaethje finished in second with 345.5 points. He won a a Ferrari 812 GTS for his performance. Matt Dennish, a 39-year-old teacher from Pennsylvania, finished with 326 points to place third in the competition. He outscored athletes such as James Harden, Tyreek Hill, Dwight Howard, Gronkowski, Michael Chandler and Micah Parsons, who all finished in the top 20 of the athletes who competed in the event. Harden dressed as Hulk Hogan for his WWE entrance. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was also among the athletes who participated, struggling in the pitching accuracy competition. He finished 36th in the competition. Jacksonville Jaguars two-way star Travis Hunter had the worst showing among the athletes who competed at the event, while new Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant finished with the second-worst mark.
