The terrifying sandstorm hit the town of Dunhuang, in the west of the country, on May 3.
A blood orange hue was seen descending over the region trapping helpless tourists inside the strong winds.
The severe dust storm whipped up at around 6pm local time around the Mingsha Mountain Crescent Yueya Spring Scenic Spot.
Hundreds of stranded tourists can be seen in the nightmarish scene, with some sitting on the floor and lines of others walking up a steep hill.
Horrified onlookers take pictures and videos of the sandstorm which appears to have reduced visibility significantly.
Separate footage showed the inside of a packed tourist bus taking visitors to safety - but without any visibility through the front window.
The driver can barely see a few metres in front of his car, before the vehicle stops ahead of another car flashing its headlights through the dust.
The Beaufort scale measured these powerful gusts at Force 12 as they tore through the city.
Ticket sales were suspended after authorities swiftly activated the emergency response.
The remote region is located on the edge of the Gobi Desert.

It is known for being one of the main stopping points on the ancient Silk Road trade route, which was used more than 2,000 years ago.
The harrowing weather phenomenon sparked a city-wide amber emergency.
All public and tourist activities were binned for the day, including an open-air concert.
Recovery workers spent three hours evacuating stranded tourists from the affected areas.
Deputy head of the city's traffic team Zhao Li said: "Over 80 trips have been made, with 142 vehicles dispatched, ensuring that the more than 5,200 tourists safely returned to the city center."
What causes a sandstorm?

The sun heats the ground intensely – in desert regions, the ground gets very hot during the day, warming the air just above it.
The rising hot air creates a difference in air pressure, which causes strong winds to rush in to fill the gap.
If the soil is dry and loose, the powerful winds begin to pick up tiny grains of sand and fine dust.
These particles are carried at high speeds, often flying close to the ground but sometimes lifted high into the air.
Thick clouds of sand can block out sunlight and reduce visibility to almost nothing.
Sandstorms can sweep across entire cities or cross into neighbouring countries, depending on the strength of the wind.
When the winds weaken, the sand and dust slowly settle back to the ground, leaving a coating of grit everywhere.
The busses provided were free of charge to ensure all visitors were taken to a safe place as soon as possible.
Tourist Guo Beibei said: "The wind was so strong once we were on top of the dunes that we couldn't even open our eyes.
"We all sat there hoping it would pass, but it just got worse."
Holidaymakers who could not be evacuated were put up in visitor centres and city council buildings until the storm passed.
Weather reporter Wang Yan explained: "If tourists lose their bearings and walk the wrong way, they could end up deeper in the desert."

Of the various land crossings between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, arguably the most worn and underrated is the Huanggang port. But this checkpoint is due to get a new facelift, with Shenzhen authorities confirming that the project is expected to reach completion within this year. The Huanggang port is the first and only 24-hour passenger checkpoint between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, and has been in the process of reconstruction since 2019. This is the first time that we've had official confirmation about the new port's anticipated timeline. Over the years, travellers have veered towards the Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau checkpoints since they're more straightforward and linked directly to the MTR. In contrast, Huanggang has always been a little more annoying to navigate, as one would need to go through immigration board a bus, alight after a short ride to go through another immigration checkpoint, before finding and getting back on the same bus. The upside is that it is open around the clock, and since it runs on coach services, travellers will always be able to get a seat. Thankfully, the upcoming remodel is also bringing new checkpoint arrangements. Travellers will only need to go through one round of inspection and customs clearance, replacing the original system which required two checks in both the Hong Kong and mainland Chinese sides. This 'co-location arrangement' means that the clearance process can be dialled down from approximately 30 minutes to a mere five minutes. Without the need for two separate spaces, the redesigned Huanggang port will also be dramatically reduced in size, and the land that will be freed up has been bookmarked for a 'collaborative innovation zone' for developing an 'international talent community', with 180,000 sq m of living spaces with healthcare and education facilities. And if you've never been a fan of the coaches? The new Huanggang port will be connected to Hong Kong's Northern Link spur line that connects the East Rail and Tuen Ma lines, as well as Shenzhen's Metro Line 7. Brit YouTube stars Ben and Reanne Dridger, from Portsmouth, who update their fans with vlogs of their travels through China, loved their encounter with the red pandas when they visited the hotel in April. Speaking to the camera, Ben said: 'China is the only place in the world where you can have a panda delivered to your room to sit on your bed with you,' before the camera panned to Reanne who was seen hand feeding pieces of apple to the friendly animal. Reanne then remarked: 'That's so cool,' as the red panda, one of four kept by the hotel, crawled across the bed and sniffed the camera. Footage has also been posted by Chinese guests on the country's popular social media site Douyin. Moment zookeeper is pinned down by pandas who chase her down inside enclosure Hotel staff have said how long the creatures stay in a guest's room 'depended on the red panda's mood that day,' according to a report by China Newsweek. The Global Times, a communist party newspaper, though has put out a severe warning that the practice could be in breach of animal rights. The hotel has responded to concerns over the treatment of the red pandas possibly being unhygienic or dangerous to children by saying the animals were all vaccinated and children had to be accompanied by an adult. Red pandas are currently listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and estimates say there are less than 10,000 living in the wild. Despite their name they are not closely related to the larger black and white giant pandas which live in the same region of China. Red pandas are part of the extended raccoon family. Before a ban was introduced in 2018, close contact with giant pandas, including photographs with cubs, was common practice.
