Jorge Masvidal calls for grudge match with 'fragile' Leon Edwards after UFC Fight Night 255 loss

USA Today28-03-2025

A fight between Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards has arguably never made more sense than now.
Edwards (22-5 MMA, 14-4 UFC) suffered a second consecutive loss when he was dominated and submitted by Sean Brady this past Saturday at UFC Fight Night 255 at The O2 in London.
With Masvidal (35-17 MMA, 12-10 UFC) eyeing a UFC return after retiring from MMA in April 2023, a long-awaited matchup with Edwards is on the forefront of his mind. He thinks beating the former UFC welterweight champion would catapult him into a final late-career title run.
'If the UFC wants to make this happen, give me the Leon fight, and then after that, I'll fight whoever has that damn belt,' Masvidal told Submission Radio. 'I know Dana (White) is probably going to see this.'
Edwards has always wanted to get his revenge from Masvidal, who attacked him backstage at UFC London in March 2019. He almost got his wish when the pair were scheduled to fight at UFC 269 in December 2021, but the bout was scrapped when Masvidal withdrew due to injury.
Stylistically, Masvidal thinks he has all the tools to beat Edwards.
'In every way, shape, or form,' Masvidal said on how he beats Edwards. 'I know for one thing, he can't wrestle me for five rounds. So, I don't have to worry about the takedowns, and I know on the feet, he's fragile compared to me.
'The opponents we've faced, what he's been able to do to them, what I've been able to do to them for the most part, besides Usman, I've been able to put a lot of guys away that he fought and went to decision with. The way he takes shots and the way I take shots, he's just fragile compared to me, and if we get in that cage, I'm willing to prove how fragile he is compared to me.'

UFC 316 'Fight Motion': Harrison, Dvalishvili title wins in super slow motion

Check out the craziest highlights from Newark in super slow motion UFC 316 earlier this month in Newark, N.J., featured some stellar stoppages – and in a rarity, two of them came in title fights. Bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili (20-4 MMA, 13-2 UFC) easily took care of former champ Sean O'Malley (18-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) in a rematch with a third-round submission. And massive betting favorite Kayla Harrison (19-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) showed why the confidence was so high in her when she submitted women's 135-pound champ Julianna Peña (13-6 MMA, 8-4 UFC) in the second round – and arguably made it look easier than her past dominance in the PFL when she was fighting 20 pounds heavier. The UFC 316 "Fight Motion" video cameras caught all the highlights in Newark in super slow motion. You can check out the action above.

UFC Baku predictions: Full card picks for Fight Night in Azerbaijan

The UFC is on the trail to the Middle East. Just less than 500 miles away from Tehran, Iran, we'll have a highly entertaining UFC card with 12 fights on it. It's a crazy time to be a UFC fan, as we get the second loaded pay-per-view card of the month next week. UFC Baku comes at you early Saturday, beginning at 12 p.m. ET on ESPN2, and the main card will go off at 3 p.m. ET on ABC. A massive audience is expected with six of the 12 fights projected to the distance, according to oddsmakers — although five of the first six fights are projected to do so, meaning it could be a slow start to the day. UFC Baku Azerbaijan predictions Jamahal Hill vs. Khalil Rountree Jr. In the heavyweight division, Jamahal 'Sweet Dreams' Hill faces off against Khalil Rountree Jr. with this fight now being lined as a pick 'em, according to most oddsmakers. On Wednesday, Hill was an underdog and among my best bets on the card. Frankly, he is still there for me, even if some of the value has evaporated as we approach the weekend. Hill is coming off two competitive losses. Rountree was beaten down last time out against Alex Pereira in one of the more brutal and violent displays we've seen in the octagon of late. Jamahal Hill works out for fans and media during the UFC Fight Night open workout at Dinamo Square on June 18, 2025 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Zuffa LLC Rountree looked like a punching bag as he got to the third and fourth rounds of that fight. Looking at his schedule, his best wins are over Dustin Jacoby — a decision that I hated at the time and don't think he earned upon a re-watch — and a victory over now-retired Anthony Smith. Rountree isn't worth betting as a slight favorite, and Hill is the play this weekend. PICK: Jamahal Hill ML (-102, FanDuel) | by KO/TKO (+240, DraftKings) Rafael Fiziev is a master at landing body strikes. Getty Images Rafael Fiziev vs. Ignacio Bahamondes Coming off three straight losses, Rafael Fiziev faces Ignacio Bahamondes. Two strikers are coming into Saturday night's co-main event tilt, and it should be fascinating to see how Fiziev recovers after the beatdown he received at the hands of Justin Gaethje. When reviewing tape, though, I think Fiziev is a solid matchup for Bahamondes. Bahamondes is much taller, but kicks have seldom been an issue for Fiziev and his strikes to the body pose an imminent threat to Bahamondes as this fight pushes forward. Fiziev should be able to utilize kicks to the body and legs to immobilize Bahamondes a bit, and I have a tough time backing the favorite here considering his strength of schedule is far below that of Fiziev. Fiziev was once considered a title contender and just because he's not the same level of striker as Gathje, it doesn't mean he should be an underdog Saturday. PICK: Fiziev by decision (+260, FanDuel) Get the lowdown on the Best USA Sports Betting Sites and Apps UFC full card picks Jamahal Hill vs. Khalil Rountree Jr.: Jamahal Hill ML (-102, FanDuel) | by KO/TKO (+240, DraftKings) Rafael Fiziev vs. Ignacio Bahamondes: Fiziev by decision (+260, FanDuel) Curtis Blaydes vs. Rizvan Kuniev: Fight starts round 2 (-290, Fanatics Sportsbook) Tofiq Musayev vs. Myktybek Orolbai: Orolbai by KO/TKO (+500, Bet365) Nazim Sadykhov vs. Nikolas Motta: Sadykhov by decision (+370, FanDuel) Muhammad Naimov vs. Bogdan Grad: Fight ends by KO/TKO (+130, DraftKings) Seokhyeon Ko vs. Oban Elliott: Fight goes the distance (-116, FanDuel) Ismail Naurdiev vs. JunYong Park: Naurdiev ML (+165, Caesars Sportsbook) Daria Zhelezniakova vs. Melissa Mullins: Fight goes the distance (+120, BetMGM) Irina Alekseeva vs. Klaudia Sygula: Fight goes the distance (-125, BetRivers) Tagir Ulanbekov vs. Azat Maksum: Ulanbekov by decision (-110, Bet365) Hamdy Abdelwahab vs. Mohammed Usman: Fight doesn't go the distance (+160, BetRivers) Why Trust New York Post Betting Erich Richter is a brazilian jiu-jitsu blue belt but he has a black belt in MMA betting. How to watch UFC Fight Night: Jamahal Hill, Khalil Rountree Jr. battle at Baku

UFC Fight Night heads to Baku Crystal Hall in Azerbaijan on Saturday, featuring a high-stakes light heavyweight showdown between former champion Jamahal Hill and the surging Khalil Rountree Jr. Both arrive with something to prove. UFC Baku delivers a stacked card, from Hill vs. Rountree to big names like Rafael Fiziev and Curtis Blaydes, plus rising Azeri prospects fighting at home. This is one of 2025's most loaded Fight Nights. Clear your schedule. Advertisement ESPN+ will also have coverage of the main card and prelims. ABC is available over the air with a broadcast antenna. Hill's long-awaited return from an Achilles injury hit a brutal snag in April 2024 when he ran into Alex Pereira's piston of a left hand at UFC 300. The first-round knockout was a jarring return to the octagon. Now, following another loss at UFC 311 in January, Hill is back in the hunt, aiming to reestablish himself as one of the division's most dangerous technicians. Across the cage, Rountree enters with momentum. A string of knockouts earned him a title shot against Pereira at UFC 307, where he pushed the champ into the fourth round before a vicious liver shot ended the night. He left with Fight of the Night honors — a loss on paper, but a career-defining performance. Expect nothing less in Baku. It's a classic clash of styles: Hill brings pressure and volume, wearing opponents down with pace. Rountree is torque and timing, a sniper who doesn't throw often but rarely misses. It's not a title eliminator, but it feels like one. With a shallow contender pool, the winner gains serious leverage. Streaming links in this article are provided by partners of The Athletic.
