INDYCAR Announces Rules Violation, Additional Penalties from The Thermal Club
INDYCAR
INDYCAR has announced a penalty for the entry of No. 83 PREMA Racing from The Thermal Club INDYCAR Grand Prix on Sunday, March 23.
PREMA Racing was in violation of: Rule 14.1.3. All parts provided by an Approved Supplier must be used as supplied without modification unless otherwise approved by INDYCAR and stated in these Rules or in update bulletins.
During an investigation into the fire involving the No. 83 in Friday's practice at The Thermal Club, INDYCAR determined the required and approved emergency pull cable, which activates the onboard fire suppression system, was not used as supplied and was replaced by the team with an unapproved product that failed to activate.
According to the rulebook, the violation is considered a Non-Race Procedure Penalty (9.2.3.), which includes the issuance of a monetary fine (9.2.3.2.) and the loss of points (9.2.3.5.).
The No. 83 entry has been fined $25,000 and will forfeit 10 championship entrant points associated with the race at The Thermal Club.
Updated 2025 season entrant standings are available here.
Members may contest the imposition of the penalties detailed in the review and appeal procedures of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES rulebook.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Opens Up About Being a NASCAR Team Owner and Crew Chief
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. stepped in as a crew chief for 18-year-old Connor Zilisch, giving him the unique perspectives of having been a crew chief and a team owner. Earnhardt owns JR Motorsports - a racing team that gives young drivers an opportunity in the Xfinity Series. Ahead of the Pocono race, Earnhardt Jr. broke down the differences between serving as an owner and crew chief: "It's way more fun than being the owner," Earnhardt told Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic. "When you're the owner, you don't do anything, and there's nothing you provide of assistance during the race weekend. There's nothing that you do that makes or breaks a weekend or lifts a team's performance. And it sucks. "I used to be a driver and have a role, and when you win, you get out [of the car] and go, 'I was part of that.' When you're the owner, you're just kind of standing there going, 'Good job, everybody.' But this is way more fun." The former driver stepped into the role after the team's regular crew chief, Mardy Lindley, was suspended for Zilisch's No. 88 car lacking two lug nuts during the race in Nashville. More Photo byEarnhardt Jr. was offered the role by Lindley, who convinced him to take on the role. "There's probably over 100 people at JR Motorsports that would have been more qualified, but Mardy asked me to do it," he added. "So I was like, 'You must want me to do it.' ... We got a great team and a great organization that can handle these types of challenges. Should be no problem. "I've sat on plenty of pit boxes, but it should be cool to see it from this perspective." Great quote from Dale Earnhardt Jr. on the difference between being an owner and crew chief, and why he's finding more enjoyment in the latter role as he steps in as crew chief for Connor Zilisch this weekend. — Jordan Bianchi (@Jordan_Bianchi) June 21, 2025 Despite never working the role, Earnhardt Jr. led Zilisch to a race win. Zilisch was in third place at the restart during the final stages of the race. He managed to quickly gain a place once it got underway again and battled with Jesse Love for the wine. With four laps left, Zilisch overtook Love for the lead and delivered a race win. After getting a win in his debut, Earnhardt Jr. took the humble path and gave credit to the racing team. "When we have an issue like this with somebody being suspended, they know what to do. Just a great job putting us in a position to succeed," Earnhardt told The CW Sports broadcaster Dillon Welch. The 18-year-old opted to give his boss some props on doing a good job. "Dale Jr, not too bad on the box," Zilisch said after the win.

IndyCar Unveils the 2028 Race Car
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. IndyCar announced the new car for the 2028 season, which will be ready for testing in 2026. The American racing series revealed the new race car while at the Road America track ahead of the XPEL Grand Prix. Dallara is producing the new chassis for the car, continuing as the exclusive chassis for IndyCar as it has since 2008. The series officials plan on the new design improving the racing throughout all four track types and pushing the car's development further. "The time has come for a new NTT INDYCAR SERIES chassis," INDYCAR President Douglas Boles said in a statement. "The DW12 served the series so well, as it provided a combination of phenomenal, wheel-to-wheel racing and critical enhancements to safety. "But recent significant updates to the car - from the aeroscreen to the hybrid power unit - have helped advance the need for a completely new car. "We are pleased by what our engineers and Dallara have collaboratively designed and believe it will appeal to the fans and paddock while also upholding our standards of safety and enhancing INDYCAR's on-track competition well into the future." The 2028 car features a projected weight of 85-100 pounds compared to the current model. The engine is going to become a 2.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 internal combustion engine, which should be more powerful. Photo by Miguel will create the power supply as it has since 2000. They designed the engine to be 25 pounds lighter and to use more electrical power. The new model is still not set, as the designers and engineers are still rounding out the rough edges of the design. IndyCar stated that further details and renderings of the design are yet to come. It is unclear when the timeline for its unveiling will. While the features and promise of the new car sound nice, there is still much to be learned from testing to see if it can deliver better racing than the current generation of cars. IndyCar's European competitor, Formula 1, introduced a new set of regulations in 2022, which promised better racing, but the cars are creating more dirty air than ever, making it harder for cars to follow others. If they manage to develop a meaningful improvement over the current car that races better across the different tracks, the series' unique tracks could shine more, setting it apart from any other motorsport in the world and continuing to compete with F1.
