Focus on jobs and investment rather than playing victim, Rafizi tells Perikatan as Kelantan wants direct taxation (VIDEO)

Malay Mail03-05-2025

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 – Perikatan Nasional's (PN) repeated claims that the Federal Government is sidelining opposition-led states like Kelantan are misleading, Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli said today.
Rafizi urged opposition parties to focus on driving economic growth through innovation and expertise instead of playing the victim.
'That is why it would be far more beneficial for us to compete by driving economic growth through expertise and innovation, rather than stoking sentiment by claiming that the Federal Government is victimising opposition-led states,' Rafizi posted on X here.
Rafizi questioned whether Kelantan's potential tax revenue would be enough to support its development needs, particularly given that federal taxes are primarily derived from income and sales taxes tied to business activity.
'If the Kelantan government cannot create an investment-friendly climate with quality jobs, it is doubtful they could guarantee the people's wellbeing — even with full control of tax collection,' he said.
He argued that development funding from the Federal Government currently covers many of Kelantan's needs, and that replicating this through state revenue alone would be difficult.

Rafizi pointed out that key infrastructure issues in the state, such as the stalled KB Sentral bus terminal and long-standing water supply problems, are unlikely to be solved without significant federal funding.
He also said that allegations that taxes collected from Kelantan are not channelled back to the state for development are a political tactic used to incite dissatisfaction rather than offer solutions.
'The accusations have become so extreme that the Pasir Putih MP even challenged the Federal Government to allow Kelantan to collect its own taxes instead of sending them to Putrajaya.
'But would the state's development issues be resolved if Kelantan were to collect its own taxes?' he asked.
Last month, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said allocation to the PAS-led Kelantan has increased by 30 per cent to RM762 million last year compared to RM588 million in 2023.
Meanwhile, the allocation to Terengganu also recorded a 28 per cent increase to RM2.02 billion last year from RM1.57 billion the previous year.

Nigerian gov't backs 400-mln-USD rare earth plant

ABUJA, June 23 (Xinhua) -- The Nigerian government has announced its full support for the construction of one of Africa's largest rare earth and critical minerals processing plants in the central state of Nasarawa, expected to attract at least 400 million U.S. dollars in direct investment and create over 10,000 jobs nationwide. Dele Alake, minister of solid minerals development, said in a statement sent to Xinhua Monday that the project, funded by Hasetins Commodities Limited, aligns with the value addition campaign by the President Bola Tinubu-led government, emphasizing in-country processing and beneficiation of minerals. Alake described the development as a "significant milestone in efforts to boost investor confidence in Nigeria's mining sector," saying the plant will promote crucial skills transfer and enhance the solid minerals sector's contribution to the national economy. He said the local firm aimed to increase its current installed capacity of 6,000 metric tons by an additional 12,000 metric tons, with preparations for the groundbreaking of the expanded facility already underway. "I applaud the company for its strategic foresight and patriotic investment in the 400-million-dollar rare earth metals plant," the minister said. Hasetins Commodities Limited is a local private company specializing in the production of critical metals essential for high-tech applications and defense systems, including rare earth and platinum group metals. In a separate statement, the firm said its operational model incorporates early-stage beneficiation by pre-separating metals locally. It added that this approach is designed to generate immediate income for artisanal miners and is coupled with comprehensive training programs, provision of protective equipment, and broader community engagement.

Sanusi retains Sik Pas leadership for sixth consecutive term

SIK – Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has once again been entrusted to lead the Sik Pas division as Yang Dipertua for the 2025–2027 term. The Jeneri assemblyman retained the position for the sixth consecutive term since 2015 after winning unopposed. This year's election also saw all key positions, including members of the division committee, returned unopposed during the 41st Annual General Meeting held on Saturday. Sanusi, who also served as Pas election director, will continue to head the division's leadership alongside a largely unchanged lineup of key committee members and party wings in Sik. Sik MP Ahmad Tarmizi Sulaiman remained as Deputy Yang Dipertua, while Belantek assemblyman Ahmad Sulaiman retained his post as Vice Yang Dipertua. Badrul Hisham Abdul Rahman continued as Secretary (by appointment) and Ailmi Zakarya remained as Treasurer. Muhammad Sanusi (centre) with the newly appointed Sik Pas Division Committee for the 2025–2027 term. Other retained posts included Mohd Rizal Zainon as Information head and Yusop Taib as elections director. For the party's wings, Harun Haya led the Dewan Ulamak, Mohd Shahiful Mohd Nasir continued as Pas youth chief and Norhashimah Abd Rahman remained Muslimat (Women's) Wing head. When contacted, Sanusi said following the division's election, the primary focus would be strengthening the party's operations at all levels in preparation for the next General Election (GE). "One of the main focuses for Sik Pas is to streamline the election machinery and expand grassroots engagement strategies. "We've achieved a clean sweep of 3-0 in both GE14 and the recent state elections with significantly increased majorities. We intend to maintain this momentum," he said. In GE14 (2018), Pas won the Sik parliamentary seat with a majority of 3,195 votes. This figure surged in GE15 (2022), where the party secured a majority of 16,588 votes, more than triple the previous margin reflecting a notable increase in public support. Ahmad Tarmizi won the Sik parliamentary seat with 22,294 votes in GE14 and increased that to 32,949 votes in GE15. During the 2023 Kedah state election, Pas also successfully defended the Jeneri and Belantek state seats with larger majorities than in previous contests. In Jeneri, Sanusi defeated Umno Sik division chief Datuk Muhamad Khizri Abu Kassim with a 16,050-vote majority, securing 21,823 votes to Khizri 5,773. In Belantek, Ahmad Sulaiman won with 17,782 votes, beating Mazli Saipi (3,626 votes) by a majority of 14,156. Sanusi stressed that the momentum achieved across all three areas must be further strengthened and warned against complacency despite previous victories. "The appointment of this new committee is expected to reinforce the organisational structure at the division level and intensify our efforts in community outreach and welfare programmes, in line with the party's aspirations at both the state and national level," he added.

Fiserv unveils plans to launch stablecoin with Circle, PayPal as partners

(Reuters) -Fiserv on Monday unveiled plans to launch a stablecoin, joining a growing number of U.S. companies exploring the technology as the crypto asset moves into the mainstream. The announcement comes after the U.S. Senate passed a landmark stablecoin bill last week, which analysts said could mark a turning point in the crypto oversight debate and a breakthrough for a sector long mired in regulatory uncertainty. The financial technology firm said its stablecoin, FIUSD, will be integrated into its existing banking and payments infrastructure by year-end. The company added that FIUSD will rely on stablecoin infrastructure provided by Paxos and Circle Internet. Shares of Circle, which issues the second-largest stablecoin by market value, rose 15%, while Fiserv and PayPal were last up 2.3% and 1.7%, respectively. Stablecoins are pegged to currencies such as the U.S. dollar and designed to hold a steady value backed by reserves. Once a niche corner of crypto, they have gained popularity for offering protection from price swings. Fintechs and traditional financial firms are increasingly turning to stablecoins to streamline cross-border payments, speed up settlements, and broaden access to digital finance. "We view it (the launch) as a positive indicator of Fiserv's ability to innovate rapidly and leverage central positioning between financial institutions and merchants to bridge traditional and emerging payment systems," analysts at TD Cowen said. Analysts say the stablecoin bill, known as the GENIUS Act, could lend greater legitimacy to the sector, but the Republican-led House must first pass its version before it goes to President Donald Trump for approval. "It's a timely series of announcements with passage of GENIUS Act appearing increasingly imminent," the brokerage added. Fiserv said it has partnered with PayPal to build future interoperability between FIUSD and PayPal USD (PYUSD), to allow consumers and businesses to move funds domestically and internationally. Interoperability typically allows different stablecoins to function across platforms, enabling users to send, receive or convert between tokens without disruption.
