INSIDE MAIL – WAGGA
ME ME (12) has finished second twice in four career starts. One of them was behind a subsequent Highway winner in Urafiki. The other was first-up at Kembla on April 15 where he was passed late after a willing duel over the last furlong. Go well here. SUPER NIC (4) is a Gary Colvin-trained local with a favourable alley, Blaike McDougall, and trialled rather well. KURRAJONG (2) did some good things in his first preparation. The jumpouts of SMART ASSET (3) have been good.
Bet: ME ME to win, exacta 12 to beat 4, trifecta 4 / 2, 3, 4
SPARKLENGLITTER (6) was bought online for $2,500 in May last year. The Pat Murphy-trained mare has won $34,700 in two starts, both easy wins. In fact, she won her Maiden by a three-quarters of a length then went to the Class 1 and won by four-and-a-half lengths in fast time. XSPIRITOUS (7) has a compelling set of numbers; not least that she has a win and a third from her four runs at this track and trip. Should be the main challenger to this favourite.
PAPARAZZO (5) is a Craig Weeding-trained three-year-old by Holler who was runner-up to Black Caviar's daughter, Persian Caviar, on debut. Ran second again after that, spelled, and resumed a popular win at Benalla on April 14. Tyler Schiller, good draw and easy to like. SHERIDAN STREET (12) is a Doug Gorrel-trained filly who drew 12 of 12 on debut at Gundagai of all places but was still able to lead all the way, beating the subsequent winner Isaguru. Horrible draw again but has Molly Bourke on.
JATO (3) was bought for $25,000 as a weanling by Neville Begg. He is by Starcraft out of a Zabeel mare so he has been waiting all his life to get to a mile and gets there at the perfect time given he is third-up off a very classy win in a 1400m Class 1 at Albury on April 24. DUPLI KATE's (2) barnstorming win (and wow, what a ride) here in the Guineas Prelude took her record to four wins and three thirds from 11 starts. TACT (7) is a lightly raced last start winner. Another one wanting a mile.
Bet: JATO to win, exacta 3 to beat 2
BON HOLLER (9) has two wins and a fourth from his three starts. That fourth was to Spicy Lu who ran in the Champagne Stakes soon after. As for Bon Holler's next, and last start, he was a big winner here over 1300m with a substantial weight. Drawn well and gets B-Mac. (Blaike McDougall). PROPHET'S DAUGHTER (2) has run some good races in some good quality races and without luck from time to time. LOVE ON DISPLAY (16) was fantastic at her first NSW run.
SO YOU PENCE (15) was '2, 1' first prep, long spell, then '2, 1' this prep, winning the last one by panels. Should also point out that she was a neck second on debut (November 2022) to the future Wagga Town Plate winner, The Prodigal Son. KEIKOKU (5) is purpose-built for a fast run 1200m at Wagga. Famous for being slow early but fast late as he was in the Wagga Town Plate Prelude last start.
Bet: SO YOU PENCE to win, KEIKOKU each-way, quinella 5, 15, boxed trifecta 5, 7, 8, 12, 15
MEDATSU (10) is a Chris Waller-trained gelding who has been competitive to varying degrees when tried in some good races; examples one and two being his sixth in of the Rosehill Cup and the recent fifth to stablemate Matsulem in the Albury Cup. Kerrin McEvoy is two rides for one win on Medatsu. HELLUVA SOIREE (16) is two from two at Wagga, sure in easier grade than this, but she is a mare in rare form. Way overs at $61/16.
LOVE ON DISPLAY (22) may have already run, if so, all roads lead to SALUTE AGAIN (1) who has some rock solid Highway form. On top of that, she was fourth in the 2024 SDRA Qualifier at Albury; the one where the Final winner, Asgarda, was runner-up. Third-up here, gets 3kg off. PRINCE PAPA (12) has only won three from 27 but he is two starts for a win and a third at Wagga and better still, is one for one at the track and distance. CASHBURN (11) and JAZZ ALL KNIGHT (15) have claims.

Kiwi trotters back in force for 2025 Inter Dominion

Young Kiwi trotting star Bet N Win is leading the charge to wind back the clock. For a long time the Kiwis 'owned' the Inter Dominion trotting series, winning 18 of the 23 finals from Yankee Loch in 1989 to I Can Doosit in 2012. Champions like Lyell Creek (2000), Pride Of Petite (1996 & '97), Take A Moment (2001 & '03) and I Can Doosit (2011 & '11) led the New Zealand dominance. But the ride has turned in recent years with Aussies winning five of the past six finals. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! It's been due to pandemic and a date change causing less Kiwi interest in the great race, but also by the dominance of Australia's champion Just Believe, who won the crown in 2022 and 2023. But the Kiwis are back in force for this revamped and enriched Brisbane series, which starts on Saturday week and culminates with a $500,000 final at Albion Park on July 19. While there are only two Kiwis in the trotting series, they are two of the biggest players in Bet N Win and Oscar Bonavena. And both have already snared wins in Australia in the build-up. Oscar Bonavena won brilliantly at Albion Park last Saturday week, then ran some sparkling closing times to finish a close second at the same track last night. Bet N Win, who only arrived in Australia last Tuesday, opened his campaign when he hardly raised to a sweat to cruise to victory at Menangle last night. They are trying to become the first Kiwi to win the Inter Dominion trotting crown since Winterfell did with the home ground advantage in the 2019 Auckland series. The last Kiwi to win the final in Australia was I Can Doosit at the now defunct Moonee Valley track way back in 2012. Bet N Win and Oscar Bonavena make for a fascinating contrast, but little separates their chances in Brisbane. Bet N Win in the young buck, a five-year-old who has raced just 23 times for 13 wins. Oscar Bonavena is most likely in his last year of racing as a nine-year-old, who boasts 34 wins and almost $1.15 million in earnings. They are the new and the old of NZ trotting. The latest markets have Oscar Bonavena rated slightly higher at $3.50 and Bet N Win at $4.50 to win the final. Both of them will have turn the tables on Australia's new trotting star Arcee Phoenix, who beat the pair on their patch in the $NZ500,000 TAB Trot at Cambridge on April 4. Arcee Phoenix has long looked the next big thing in Aussie trotting and he's delivering on that this year. Chris Svanosio's six-year-old followed a sparkling Melton trial win with an arrogant first-up win at the same track last night. There was a touch of Just Believe about the way he made a midrace move to sit outside the leader and toyed with his rivals last night. His odds were slashed from $3.50 to $2.80 for the trotting finals straight after it. • Adam Hamilton is a paid contributor writing on harness racing for News Corp.

Headley Grange continues winning ways in Civic Stakes

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Headley Grange, racing's 'Mr Reliable', has surged through his grades this season and is now a stakes winner after he scored at Royal Randwick on Saturday. Trainer Joe Pride's talented sprinter has forgotten how to run anything but at his very best as he claimed the Listed $200,000 Civic Stakes (1400m). In a nine-race streak that began almost 12 months ago, Headley Grange has not missed a top two finish, winning five times. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'It's crazy,'' Pride said when asked to comment on Headley Grange's remarkable consistency. 'He was good again, it was nice to see him step up that higher grade today. 'It was a tough win and that's never easy to do in a high pressure race with plenty of opposition. 'But he's a quality horse and he has come through the grades really well.'' Headley Grange, confidently baked into $2.45 favouritism, gave Jason Collett the third leg of a winning treble when he comfortably held off Welwal ($26) to win by a half length with Astero ($51) three-quarters of a length away third. The Bjorn Baker-trained Raikkonen ($5) settled outside Headley Grange early but then lost his position when stablemate Iknowastar came across in front of him. Raikkonen then ended up on the rail behind Headley Grange but when the winner eased away from the inside to make his finishing run, Baker's sprinter stayed close to the inside and rallied late to finish an unlucky fourth. But Headley Grange was a deserving winner - and he's not finished yet. Pride revealed plans to set Headley Grange for the South Grafton Cup (1600m) on July 13. The South Grafton Cup is one of a series of races where the winner is eligible to gain a start in the $3 million The Big Dance (1600m) at Royal Randwick on the first Tuesday in November. • It's A Knockout stuns rivals with dominant victory 'He's come back particularly well this preparation and we will go to the South Grafton Cup next,'' Pride said. 'We will try and qualify him for one of the Dances.'' Headley Grange has now scored successive wins to start his winter campaign after a brilliant first-up effort over 1300m at Royal Randwick two weeks ago. 'I don't think he was quite as sharp today as he was off that hot tempo the other day,'' Pride said. 'Maybe just second up he was a little bit vulnerable today but I would say he will bounce out of this win. 'I don't know if his best trip is 1400m or a mile (1600) yet. We want it to be a mile as there are not as many races around for 1400m races.'' Collett, who completed his treble on Headley Grange after his earlier wins on Callistemon and Lulumon, wasn't legged into the saddle on the Pride sprinter until the Civic Stakes field came out onto the track. Pride, who trained a double in successive races when Accredited won the closer, had made application to Racing NSW stewards to have Headley Grange walked out riderless from the Theatre of the Horse to the course proper. 'At the end of last preparation and again last start, when the jockey mounted Headley Grange he started to suck back and play up a bit in the yard,'' Collett explained. • Brave One's wide run no obstacle in Randwick triumph 'Joe asked the stewards if he could have me legged on last and be last onto the track and that way he is always moving forward and not in that environment. It worked as he was able to stay relaxed.'' The Civic Stakes proved an easy watch for Headley Grange backers as Collett gave the ever-consistent sprinter the smoothest of rides. 'The tempo was solid through the middle section and I had a horse travelling 'lovely' when the opportunity arose pretty early in the straight to pop off,'' Collett said. 'I did although it was a long way from home, especially at that tempo, but he just found another gear. 'When they came to him at the 150 (metres) he went again so that's a really good sign.'' Collett agreed with Pride's assertion that although Headley Grange's win wasn't as dynamic as his first-up effort, the rising five-year-old gelding showed there are better wins in store after he improved his race record to eight wins from 18 starts and nearly $600,000 prizemoney. 'The tempo of that race was different to last start,'' Collett said. 'It was genuinely run but Headley Grange has quickened off it and then he's had to tough it out. 'Both starts he has done it either way. Last start, a turn of foot and today he has had to show he was tough under pressure. They're great attributes to have – he's a really nice horse.''
