Penang acts to protect growers from rogue traders exploiting state's authentic durian brand
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government takes a serious view of the exploitation of local growers by rogue traders who import durians (from other states or Thailand) and sell it under the authentic Balik Pulau brand.
State Agrotechnology, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol said yesterday that his office had collaborated with police, the Department of Agriculture, the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) and the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Service (MAQIS) to set up roadblocks to detain agricultural products that do not comply with regulations.
'This operation is being carried out due to the issue of durians from outside Penang being brought into the state by unscrupulous traders to sell the fruit under the Balik Pulau durian brand. This issue was raised during the last State Assembly session.
'This restriction was also imposed to inspect vegetables and fruits to ensure they comply with the GPL (Grading, Packaging and Labelling) 2008 Regulations under FAMA ACT 141. Yesterday itself, three violation notices related to GPL were issued,' he said in a statement today.
The GPL 2008 Regulations require that agricultural products must be graded, packaged and labelled before being marketed.
The GPLs issued yesterday were the first of such imposed on wholesalers, who will face a maximum fine of up to RM25,000.
Fahmi said the roadblock carried out from 8 pm to 11.30 pm yesterday was also the first of its kind held in Penang and will be implemented again at different locations in the future, to reinforce the state's commitment in protecting local farmers and consumers.
Balik Pulau is famed for its many durian orchards, which produce the finest of varieties, such as Black Thorn, Red Prawn, Tupai King and Musang King.

SOOK (June 22): A total of 48 pasar tamu (weekly markets) across Sabah have been successfully upgraded or newly constructed under a Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) initiative, aimed at strengthening rural economic activity and supporting the National Food Security Policy. 'Previously, traders here used only wooden tables and canvas sheets to shield themselves from the sun and rain. With the upgraded infrastructure, I see great potential for further development,' he said. The Pasar Tamu at Rancangan Belia Sook, established in 2021 with just eight traders, has since expanded to include 40 regular vendors. The market upgrade, which began on 25 September 2024, was completed on 2 April 2025. Arthur, who is also the Member of Parliament for Pensiangan, said the upgrades reflect the government's commitment to empowering rural agro-entrepreneurs by providing more comfortable and conducive business environments. 'These projects were carried out in phases, prioritising markets most in need of repair or those no longer suitable for use. The upgraded markets are expected to boost the competitiveness of local agricultural products and spur local economic activity,' he said. The officiating event drew participation from the local community, including village leaders, government officials, and agro-based entrepreneurs. Also present were FAMA Director-General Abdul Rashid Bahri, FAMA Sabah and Labuan director Sarman Sidno and FAMA Market Institution Division director Mohd Shahrizan Mansor. With the upgraded facilities, the pasar tamu now offers a more systematic and appealing space for local entrepreneurs while serving as a weekly economic and social hub. It is hoped that the initiative will not only foster entrepreneurship but also preserve the traditional market culture that defines Sabah's rural communities.

New electricity tariff reflects energy reform, says Fahmi
KUALA LUMPUR: The implementation of the new electricity tariff schedule starting July 1 is a clear reflection of the major reforms being undertaken by the government, particularly in the national energy sector, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Fahmi, who is also the MADANI Government spokesperson, said the initiative aligns with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which aims to increase the use of renewable energy (RE) and reduce carbon emissions by 2050. 'Under the new tariff schedule, 85 per cent of domestic consumers or account holders are expected to enjoy the same, or even lower, electricity rates starting July 1, 2025, provided their monthly usage does not exceed 1,000 kilowatt hours,' he said. 'This is one of the key reforms being advanced in a coordinated manner by the government, together with the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), the Energy Commission (ST), and Tenaga Nasional Berhad. It demonstrates that efforts to implement renewal or reform can still deliver tangible benefits to the people,' he said. Fahmi said this to reporters at the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya's Kita MADANI Carnival at IWK Eco Park, Pantai Dalam, here today. The Average Base Tariff Rate for the RP4 period has been set at 45.40 sen/kWh, slightly lower than the 45.62 sen/kWh approved in December 2024 - reflecting an overall reduction of up to 19 per cent in the average electricity tariff compared with RP3.
