Wicked 2 trailer released: Find out when the sequel to Ariana Grande's hit comes out

Express Tribune05-06-2025

The first full-length trailer for Wicked: For Good, the highly awaited sequel to Wicked, has been released, offering fans a glimpse into the story's darker direction.
Returning to their iconic roles, Cynthia Erivo portrays Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, while Ariana Grande stars as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North.
The trailer opens with Glinda standing on a balcony, gazing out at a mob of angry citizens carrying flaming torches in search of Elphaba.
The dramatic conclusion shows Elphaba saying, "I'm off to see the Wizard" before flying off into the distance on her broom.
The story picks up where the first film left off, delving into the aftermath of Elphaba and Glinda's decision to part ways. Elphaba is now branded an enemy of the state of Oz, while Glinda finds herself as a public figure controlled by the Wizard.
Director Jon M. Chu, who helms the sequel, shared insights into the story's emotional trajectory: 'Our heart was broken when Glinda can't make the choice that we want her to so badly at the end of movie one, and it feels empowering for Elphaba to fly away from society. In movie two, we get to see the consequences of those choices. The temperature is up.'
As with the first film, Wicked: For Good will feature new music, with two brand-new songs integrated into the sequel's plot. Chu revealed that the songs are essential to the story, helping to drive the narrative forward.
The film will also see the return of Erivo and Grande's on-screen chemistry, which captivated fans during the first movie's promotional tour.
The pair even opened the 2025 Academy Awards with a Wicked medley. They will be joined by co-stars Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, and Jeff Goldblum, who reprises his role as the Wizard.
The sequel, which was shot alongside the first movie in Elstree Studios, is set to be released on 21 November.
Fans can expect a darker, more intense chapter in the Wicked saga, with the stakes raised and the bond between Elphaba and Glinda put to the ultimate test.

Is Jonathan Bailey leaving 'Bridgerton? Star hints at future on Netflix show

Jonathan Bailey has confirmed he will continue his role in Bridgerton, even as his career expands with high-profile film roles. The actor, who stars as Anthony Bridgerton, recently wrapped production on the Netflix drama's fourth season, expected to release in 2026. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Bailey assured that despite the show's rotating focus on different characters each season, he remains proud to be part of the ensemble. 'I've never been someone who's like, 'Thanks, bye.' It's not in my nature,' he said, emphasising the sense of continuity and collaboration the series offers. Bailey's return comes as he takes on leading roles in global projects, including Wicked and Jurassic World Rebirth, set to premiere this summer. Filming on Bridgerton remains demanding, but Bailey credits the production's structure and loyal audience as reasons to stay involved. 'I know how important familiarity of character and storyand consistency is in long-running series,' he added. Since debuting in 2020, Bridgerton has become one of Netflix's most successful original series, and Bailey's portrayal of Viscount Bridgerton helped lead season 2 to record viewership. His continued involvement reassures fans of the show's core cast stability amid broader changes.

Tom Cruise to receive an honorary Oscar

US actor and film producer Tom Cruise will receive an honorary Oscar ahead of the 2026 Academy Awards, the organisers said Tuesday, marking a career first for the Hollywood veteran, AFP reported. Cruise was selected to receive a statuette for his contributions to cinema, along with choreographer Debbie Allen and production designer Wynn Thomas. Dolly Parton will also be awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her decades-long humanitarian work, with the trophies presented at the Academy's 16th Governors Awards event in November. Cruise, 62, has had four Oscar nominations but has never won the prestigious prize, despite achieving global fame for his roles in action films Mission: Impossible and Top Gun. "Tom Cruise's incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunt community has inspired us all," the Academy said in a statement. It praised him as "one of the most recognised and highest-grossing actors of all time" and noted his commitment to performing all of his own stunts. Allen, 75, was recognised for her five-decade career that has included choreographing the Academy Awards ceremony seven times and working on films including 1995 rom-com Forget Paris. Meanwhile, Thomas was saluted for his production work on titles such as Malcolm X and Do the Right Thing. At last year's Governors Awards, the Academy honoured legendary figures from across the film industry, including the late Quincy Jones, who became the first Black producer ever nominated for best picture. Other recipients included celebrated casting director Juliet Taylor, Love Actually screenwriter and director Richard Curtis, and James Bond producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. The upcoming 16th Governors Awards will again be presented in partnership with Rolex, the exclusive watch sponsor of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
