Kuberaa, directed by Sekhar Kammula and starring Dhanush, Nagarjuna, Rashmika Mandanna, Jim Sarbh, and others, has taken a reasonable start at the Indian box office, grossing Rs. 13 crore on its opening day. Despite below average advance bookings, which were skewed toward the Telugu version despite the presence of a star as big as Dhanush, ticket sales surged significantly on release day for both the Tamil and Telugu versions, driven by overwhelmingly positive word of mouth.
The film has received praise for its tight and engaging screenplay, Dhanush's award-worthy performance, and strong support from Nagarjuna and Rashmika Mandanna, alongside other impressive technical aspects.
Kuberaa Takes a Rs 13.25 Crore Gross India Start, Driven By Strong Word Of Mouth
In terms of contributions, the Telugu version is estimated to have contributed Rs. 8 crore to the film's opening day total across India, while the Tamil version followed with a respectable Rs. 5 crore. The Hindi version, however, has underperformed, grossing only Rs. 25 lakh. This opening day figure is nearly double what the trade anticipated based on advance bookings, underscoring the power of positive word of mouth. Bookings for the weekend appear robust, positioning the film for potential blockbuster success.

Kuberaa Plays Across India In Multiple Languages
Kuberaa is among Dhanush's most expensive projects. Initially budgeted at Rs. 100 crore, production costs escalated to Rs. 120 crore by the time of release. Including Rs. 10 crore for print and advertising, the total expenditure stands at Rs. 130 crore. With Rs. 85 crore already recouped from non-theatrical revenues, the film's financial outlook is promising, thanks to strong word of mouth. A worldwide gross of Rs. 100 crore will allow the film to break even, with any additional earnings contributing to its profit.

Ed Sheeran's jam with Indian percussionist goes viral; ‘Shape of You' gets a ‘ghatam' twist

British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran's latest track Sapphire – with Indian musical sensation Arijit Singh – that dropped on June 6, has become a monster hit. Instagram alone has over 700K Reels made on the song, and on YouTube, the song has over 5.8 million views already. Now, an Instagram Reel posted by percussionist Ganesh Murali Iyer, showing a jamming session with Sheeran, with both of them playing the ghatam, has gone viral with nearly a million views. Ghatam is a traditional South Indian clay percussion instrument, known for its unique earthy tones. In the video, Iyer begins playing the rhythm of Sheeran's hit song Shape Of You, and the English singer soon joins in, trying his hand at the clay instrument. Soon, viewers are treated to a ghatam-backed cover of the song, sung by Sheeran himself. Captioning the post, Iyer wrote, 'Ed and me playing ghatam from our Mumbai jam. This just happened before we jammed sapphire. This is also one of the moments that actually led to it….' Iyer also wrote, 'These are 2 ghatams in C# and D# Ig. I gifted the C# ghatam to Ed. This is not REHEARSED I just gave the instrument to him and we both vibed and chilled. It was so much fun recording for him at Goa. Such a spontaneous musician.' Here it is: In the background is Ganesh Murali Iyer, the ghatams and mics. In the comments section of the Reel, Iyer explained what a ghatam is. He wrote, 'The Ghatam is a percussion instrument used in various repertoires across the Indian subcontinent, especially in Southern India . Its variant called ghara in Punjab and Magda in Rajasthan . It is made mainly of clay, baked with brass or copper filings with a small amount of iron filings. It represents the pancha Maha bhoota's according to Vedic tradition ( five elements of nature) ie Earth (Prithvi), Water (Jala), Fire (Agni), Air (Vayu), and Space or Ether (Akasha).' Many Instagram users reacted to the post. One said, 'Bro got the entire country together with just 1 song.' Another user commented, 'True devotees of art together! What a moment.' A third user wrote, 'From class benches to with ed sheeran on ghatam we've seen it all!!' Watch Sheeran's Sapphire here: The Sapphire music video is also making headlines as it features Indian cinema giant Shah Rukh Khan in a one-second cameo. Khan appears between 42nd and 43rd seconds, for those who are keen.

Kuberaa box office collection day 1: Dhanush-starrer has a smaller opening than Kamal Haasan's Thug Life, earns Rs 13 crore

Kuberaa box office collection day 1: The much-anticipated pan-India release Kuberaa, starring Dhanush, Nagarjuna, and Rashmika Mandanna, has made a notable impact on its opening day, despite mixed regional occupancy and a box office performance slightly lower than expected. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Kuberaa opened with Rs 13 crore, which is slightly lesser than Dhanush's last Tamil release Raayan as that film made around Rs 16 crore on its opening day. The film was shot in both Telugu and Tamil simultaneously, and was released in both these languages along with dubbed versions in Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi. The Telugu-speaking regions led the charge, with the film recording an overall occupancy of 57.36%. Morning shows began modestly at 38.94%, but footfall increased steadily throughout the day, rising to 54.58% in the afternoon, 57.04% in the evening, and peaking impressively at 78.87% during night shows. In contrast, the film saw relatively low occupancy in other languages: 33.73% in Tamil Nadu, 6.54% in Karnataka, and just 6.73% in Hindi. Despite this, industry analysts are optimistic that Kuberaa could benefit from positive word-of-mouth and build momentum over the weekend. In Telugu, films like Game Changer, Daaku Maharaj and HIT: The Third Case released amid major hype. Shankar's Game Changer, starring Ram Charan, opened with Rs 51 crore at the box office but managed to make Rs 131 cr, which was much lesser than its humungous budget. Nandamuri Balakrishna-starrer Daaku Maharaj made Rs 90 crore in the domestic market, after making around Rs 25 crore on opening day. Even Nani's HIT: The Third Case made Rs 21 crore on the first day, but ended its run at around Rs 80 crore. In Tamil, Ajith's Good Bad Ugly made Rs 153.18 crore after opening at Rs 29 crore. Kamal Haasan's Thug Life, which was the most hyped film of the year, opened at around Rs 15 crore, and is yet to cross Rs 50 crore after two weeks in theatres. Much of the buzz of Kuberaa surrounds Dhanush's transformative performance as a beggar, which has drawn praise across social media for its rawness and emotional depth. Fans have also lauded Rashmika Mandanna and Nagarjuna for choosing unconventional, meaningful roles. The trio's collaboration was a major factor driving pre-release hype. Adding a layer of emotional resonance to the film's debut, Dhanush was spotted watching Kuberaa on opening day with his son, Linga. The actor was visibly moved by the crowd's enthusiastic response.
