Attendance Allowance is paid to state pensioners suffering from a long-term physical or mental condition or disability.

You could see your Attendance Allowance benefit stopped over a simple mistake

It is paid at two different weekly rates depending on your level of need - £73.90 and £110.40.
However, if your personal circumstances change you must tell the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) as it means your entitlement to the benefit could go up or down.
If you don't report any change, you could have your payments stopped, have to pay a penalty or even be taken to court.
The types of changes you have to report include if you plan to leave the UK for longer than four weeks or you go to prison.

You also have to report if you change your name, address or bank details and if your immigration status changes.
You need to contact the Attendance Allowance helpline straight away if:
the level of help you need or your condition changes - you'll need to provide details like if the amount of times you need help each day has changed
you go into hospital or a care home - you'll need to provide the address, the dates you've been there for, and how your stay is paid for
a medical professional has said you might have 12 more or less to live (you could get Attendance Allowance at a higher rate under "special rules for end of life")
you plan to leave the country for more than 4 weeks
you go into prison
you change your name, address or bank details
you want to stop receiving your benefit
your doctor's details change
your immigration status changes, if you're not a British citizen
You can contact the AA helpline on 0800 731 0122 Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm.
What happens if you don't report a change in circumstances
If you've not reported a change in circumstances and have been overpaid, you'll have to pay it back.
You should get a letter from DWP Debt Management explaining how to repay and manage any benefit money you owe.

You can pay back the overpayment in full or set up regular monthly payments.
If you need help managing repayments, you can contact the DWP Debt Management contact centre on 0800 916 0647.
If you are found to have been overpaid due to your own negligence or error you may also have to pay a £50 penalty.
If you're suspected to have committed benefit fraud, you'll be contacted by the DWP, HMRC, the Defence Business Services or your local authority.
If you are found to have committed benefit fraud, one or more of the following may happen:
you'll be told to pay back the overpaid money
you may be taken to court or asked to pay a penalty (between £350 and £5,000)
your benefits may be reduced or stopped

Who you need to contact about reporting a change in circumstances varies based on the benefit as well.
Here is how to report a change for the main benefits:
Universal Credit - Report changes using your Universal Credit online account if you have one or contact the Universal Credit helpline on 0800 328 5644.
Pension Credit - Call the Pension Service helpline on 0800 731 0469 or report changes by post. The address is on the letters you get about your Pension Credit.
Disability benefits - Call the Disability Service Centre to report changes if you get Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or PIP. The number to call is 0800 121 4433.
Carer's Allowance - Report a change online or call the Carer's Allowance Unit on 0800 731 0297.
Housing Benefit - Tell your local council about changes if you get Housing Benefit. You can find what local council area you fall under via www.gov.uk/find-local-council.
Child Benefit - Report changes using the Child Benefit online service or call on 0300 200 3100.
All other benefits - Call Jobcentre Plus to report changes. You need to have your National Insurance number when you call. You can find your nearest centre via find-your-nearest-jobcentre.dwp.gov.uk.

My three grandchildren's eyes began glazing over the moment I started lecturing them on why our most maligned birds should be loved not loathed. Mention of the dreaded S-word had put me in a flap after the trio witnessed a holidaymaker being relieved of a doughnut by a demonic creature with evil eyes and razor-sharp beak – a seagull! 'Gull, we call them gulls! Never, never seagulls!' I pontificated with the same zeal I had once reprimanded an American for having the temerity to say soccer rather than football. ‌ Standing all schoolmasterly atop a rocky Norfolk breakwater, I explained how herring gulls with their silvery, ink-tipped wings were things of beauty but, sadly, now a Red List Species of Conservation Concern after a 70% UK population crash since the 1970s. ‌ Diminishing food resources because of landfill site closures and reductions in fish discards along with the scourge of bird flu is making survival tough for a creature that has become a pariah for its liking of fast-food scraps. As my afternoon sermon came to an end, all eyes turned to a smoky grey shape gliding elegantly above our heads. 'Gull!' The grandkids declared in unison, each waiting for approval at their correct bird identification. Time for another lecture. Pointing out the stiff wings and rotund body shape of the bird coasting leisurely over the shallows, I declared that rather than a gull we were watching a fulmar – the closest thing to an albatross patrolling British waters. Mere mention of an albatross, the mighty wanderer of storm-lashed southern oceans and ancient rhymes, had them captivated. So close was the fulmar I could point out features shared with its legendary relation: tube-shaped nostrils to distil sea-water and the ability to projectile vomit foul-smelling stomach contents to deter predators. After all the sermonising, I didn't have the temerity to admit that fulmar derives from 'foul seagull' in Old Norse! Can you recognise the wren's song The rock concert season is upon us but the sound of silence has descended on a countryside slouched in summer stillness. Warblers are no longer warbling and cuckoos have called their last. Nightingales have been put on mute. Exhausted robins are resting voices while replenishing feathers worn ragged by the labours of parenthood. Although spring's dawn chorus is a fading earworm, one headbanger still blaring out dawn to dusk is arguably nature's most powerful vocalist by weight to sound. The Eurasian wren, a chocolate-coated, ping pong ball of a bird with a sticky up tail and barrow boy's gape, has a voice that defies its diminutive proportions. Weighing a mere nine grams, the male marks his territory with a 90 decibel song as loud and powerful as a rock drum solo that's audible from a kilometre. Yet there is more to the wren's rat-a-tat song than the five-second paradiddles belted out without respite. Each of its verses contain more than 100 individual beats, many in the high frequency 7-8 kHz range, and repeated incessantly every month of the year. Rudely woken by the proclamations of a particularly raucous wren outside the bedroom window at 4am last week, I was reminded of the first lines of Walter de la Mare's beautiful poem, Jenny Wren: Of all the birds that rove and sing, Near dwellings made for men, None is so nimble, feat, and trim, As Jenny Wren. Wrens have gender identification issues across different cultures. In Germany, they take on a masculine persona and are called Zaunkonig, or Hedge King. Here in Britain, the bird was given the affectionate moniker of the Jenny Wren in the 1640s, largely because of a long-held belief the species was the female partner of the robin. While ear-splitting males are the headline act, one wren vocalisation noted in literature that I would love to hear is the lullaby whispered by mother wrens when incubating eggs or tending fledglings. The gentle sounds are said to be reminiscent of distant twittering swallow song.

Electric fans may make rooms feel warmer when used incorrectly. Rather than positioning them inwards where they circulate hot air within rooms, fans should be directed towards windows to blow hot air outside during a heatwave. Daniel McCowan, Director of Green Improve Ltd, also says that Brits should be 'strategic' when it comes to opening windows. 'UK homes are designed to retain heat,' says Daniel. 'By opening windows during a heatwave, people trap hot air inside the home and worsen the situation.' By strategically opening windows during cooler periods, Brits can avoid overheating and save money on their electricity bills this week. Daniel says windows and curtains should remain closed during the hottest hours, which are usually between 10 am and 4 pm. They can then be opened during cooler evening periods to allow heat to escape and fresh air to circulate. If someone opens their windows and allows excess heat into the home, they're more likely to rely on expensive electric fans to cool down. Electric fans are a good option as they are cheaper, smaller, lighter and more energy efficient than air conditioning. But prices of fans vary and some don't do much to keep you cool at all, which can make buying one a challenge. Pedestal fans are a great option and tend to be more powerful than tower or table top fans. We've tested top brands including Meaco, Morphy Richards and Daewoo. Here's how they compare: Morphy Richards Air Flex 9inch Circulating Pedestal Fan £149.99, Speed settings: 8 10 The Morphy Richards fan made the entire room feel fresher and cooler Credit: Oliver Dixon It's expensive, but this has a DC motor which enables the fan to use less energy whilst still giving an outstanding performance. In fact, DC motors are meant to be up to 70% more efficient than air conditioning units. So, with this, you'll get maximum cooling without the worry of soaring electric bills. It's reasonably quiet and offers eight speed settings as well as advanced oscillation, which means it can direct airflow both horizontally and vertically. The fan made the entire room feel fresher, cooler and more comfortable - even when it hit 30 degrees outside. Performance: 5/5 Value: 4/5 Total score: 9/10 Status 16inch Oscillating Stand Fan £19.99, Speed settings: 3 10 This fan was surprisingly powerful given the low £20 price tag Credit: Oliver Dixon For the price, I can't really grumble. It's not the most aesthetically pleasing, but given this cost less than £20, this was surprisingly powerful. It blew enough air around to keep a reasonably-sized room cool and it wasn't overly intrusive, though the noise measures around 40 decibels, which was higher than most. The oscillating function was very effective. The frame was a bit flimsy and it wouldn't withstand much - a child or a pet bumping into it could easily knock it over. Performance: 3/5 Value: 3/5 Total score: 6/10 Daewoo Pedestal Air Circulator Fan £79.99, Speed settings: 3 10 The Daewoo fan is easy to move around if you need to Credit: Oliver Dixon This fan was easy to put together and at 5kg, it's not too heavy, so it was easy to move from room to room too if you needed to. For nearly £80, it looked pretty flimsy and it only had three speed settings - most of the pricier ones had more to choose from. It does have a built-in oil diffuser, which did make the cool air smell lovely and created a lovely relaxing vibe around the room. It also had dual oscillation - up and down and side to side - which was effective at keeping the entire room airy and cool. Performance: 3/5 Value: 3/5 Total score: 6/10 Vonhaus Air Circulator Pedestal Fan - 16 inch £74.99, Speed settings: 12 10 The Vonhaus was 10/10 in our test Credit: Oliver Dixon This fan is hard to beat. Not only was it one of the best at cooling me down, it's a real design feature too. The innovative blade design is engineered to evenly push the air in a way that bounces off walls and surfaces. It's sleek and stylish yet easily cooled my kitchen diner, which is the largest room in my house. At night, a soft ambient backlight kicks in which was so calming and perfect for winding down. It has 12 speed settings to choose from and is energy efficient. Even though it's reasonably powerful at 35 watts, it only costs around 1p an hour to run. It also has an aromatherapy function which allows you to add a few drops of your own essential oils and the fan will spray cool air, that also smells amazing. Performance: 5/5 Value: 5/5 Total score: 10/10 Zanussi 16inch Pedestal Fan £24.99, Speed settings: 3 10 This Zanussi fan is okay for the £25 price tag Credit: Oliver Dixon For less than £25, you are getting a reasonably powerful fan. However, the legs were not very sturdy. They are hollow plastic and lack weight making the entire product a bit top heavy. I worried about it being knocked over. It's not the quietest but at the same time, the noise wasn't overly intrusive. It also has 90-degree oscillation and it gives out a decent breeze even on the lowest setting. For a budget option, it's alright. Performance: 3/5 Value: 4/5 Total score: 7/10 Meaco Sefte 10inch Pedestal Air Circulator with Storage Bag £179.99, Speed settings: 12 10 The Meaco costs a hefty £179.99, but it's very cheap to run Credit: Oliver Dixon A super low energy fan that costs from just 0.1p an hour to run. It was easy to assemble, sleek and so quiet you'll forget it's even there - hence it's name 'Sefte' which is an old English word meaning 'quite, gentle and undisturbed'. It was very quiet and unobtrusive yet has a powerful airflow of 1,140m3ph, allowing it to cool a room quickly. Previously, fans I've used in the bedroom keep me awake at night with their flashy displays but this has a night mode, which switches off the display light, mutes the buttons and gradually reduces the fan's speed overnight. The handy remote means you can control it without getting out of bed. I'm not surprised it's proving very popular this summer. The only downside is the price. At nearly £180, it's a pricey purchase. Performance: 5/5 Value: 3/5 Total score: 8/10 Duux Whisper Pedestal Fan £179.99, Speed settings: 26 10 You're spoiled for choice in terms of settings with this fan Credit: Oliver Dixon This Duux fan has some incredible features including 26 speed settings, horizontal and vertical oscillation and a 12-hour programmable timer. The 26 settings certainly give you plenty of options to choose from but I loved the natural wind mode which is designed to replicate outdoor cooling by varying the fan speed. It also has a night mode where the speed will decrease to the lowest setting over 2.5 hours. The breeze this creates is pleasant and it lived up to its "whisper" name as it was one of the quietest I tested. Even on the highest settings, the noise was not overly intrusive. The touchscreen panel was a little difficult to operate, it was easier to use the remote control. It's very energy efficient, only costing around 0.8p to run on the highest speeds. Performance: 5/5 Value: 3/5 Total score: 8/10 Air Craft LUME Quiet 2-in-1 Pedestal Fan £119 Speed settings: 12 10 Manufacturers claim this fan is never louder than an electric toothbrush Credit: Oliver Dixon Say goodbye to hot stuffy days with this cutting-edge fan, which did a brilliant job of cooling larger rooms. It's quiet. In fact, the manufacturers claim it's never louder than an electric toothbrush. You pretty much forget it's there though on its highest it does go up to 60 decibels. What I loved most was that it came with an illuminated backlight which was very calming and could be used even with the fan switched off. It's easily controlled with a remote control and has front and back guards for fan blades. It has three modes - normal, natural and sleep. Natural runs at alternating speeds to simulate a natural breeze with occasional gusts and in sleep mode, it gradually reduces speed every 30 minutes until it reaches the lowest level. Perfect for hot, restless nights. Performance: 4/5 Value: 3/5 Total score: 7/10 EcoAir Equinox 16inch DC Low Power Consumption Fan £49.99, Speed settings: 12 10 The EcoAir has a powerful and efficient motor Credit: Oliver Dixon This product is easy to assemble, efficient and economical. I thought it had an impressive power output for less than £50 and just like the Morphy Richards' fan, it has an energy efficient DC motor. It has 12 settings but it did get a bit noisy once you get to level five and I wouldn't have wanted to keep this on through the night. The fan isn't as sleek and stylish as others but it's reasonable value for money and once you've paid for it, it will cost pennies to run. It also has an energy saver function and will turn off automatically within 12 hours of the last adjustment on the control panel. Performance: 4/5 Value: 4/5 Total score: 8/10
