
'Never had a situation like this': Why Australia is unprepared for this deadly ocean threat

Known for its azure blue waters and vibrant micro-ecosystem, dive enthusiasts come from all over the world to marvel at its marine wonders: leafy sea dragons, pyjama squid, rodless angler fish and vivid corals and sponges that cover the jetty's pylons. But since mid-March, life under the jetty has been decimated by a deadly algae bloom , now spanning four-and-a-half thousand square kilometres of South Australia's gulf and coastal waters. Cinematographer Paul Macdonald has been studying life under the jetty for more than 20 years and says the damage is staggering.
"It's been part of my life for so long, and now, to see this devastation, it's just heartbreaking," he says. "Words cannot describe how sad it is." Macdonald also runs a local dive school at the jetty with his wife, Elizabeth Solich. Their monitoring in recent years led to the Edithburgh rodless angler fish being confirmed as a new species in 2021 and given the Indigenous name Narungga Frogfish. "I'd seen it breed three times. It was always in the one spot, and the coral it was living in was the size of a football," Macdonald says.
To realise it was gone was a really sad moment. The harmful algae bloom (HAB) was initially identified as karenia mikimotoi, a phytoplankton that produces a reactive oxygen species that damages gills — preventing marine creatures from breathing.
It also causes respiratory and flu-like symptoms in humans. Another strain of karenia that produces small amounts of neurotoxin (brevetoxin) has also been identified in the bloom. What's perhaps most alarming is that little can be done to prevent HABs from occurring, but the effects can be mitigated with close monitoring.
Most of what is known about the impact of the bloom on marine species has come from data collected by citizen scientists like Macdonald and Solich. Karenia mikimotoi was first identified after surfers reported a mysterious foam at Waitpinga Beach on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula in March. Since then, more than 1,400 citizen reports and photos of dead or sick marine life have exposed the consequences of the HAB.
A shared database published on the inaturalist.org website shows that more than 200 different species of marine life have been killed. OzFish, one of the non-government organisations leading the project, identified more than 100 species of fish and sharks alone. "This includes rarely encountered deepwater sharks and iconic leafy sea dragons, and popular recreational fishing species like flathead, squid, and blue swimmer crabs, and rock lobsters," says OzFish's South Australian project manager Brad Martin.
There have been calls for increased monitoring and testing during HABs and questions raised over Australia's preparedness for future events. Faith Coleman, an estuarine ecologist, who has spent hours volunteering to educate the local community about the bloom, suggests the lack of data is "a wasted opportunity". Coleman runs an environmental consultancy agency with her mother, scientist Peri Coleman, and says the main response to the bloom has come from citizen action.
The Colemans have been undertaking plankton counts under a light microscope from samples collected by the citizen scientists. "That's really the only data we have in the public sphere," Coleman says.
So that means there is very limited stuff we can do, to work out how to stop it in the future. She says regular monitoring of swimming beaches and samples taken at sea and at depth are needed to study the bloom.
In the US, federal legislation governs the research and monitoring of HABs. Director of the Southern California Conservation Observing System, Clarissa Anderson, says this has led to "state-of-the-art monitoring systems" in areas with a history of HABs. "We've been lucky to have a big academic and now government investment monitoring program that goes back to the early 2000s," she says. "So we do have some pretty long-term records with which to put any one of these individual events into context." In Australia, the only labs testing for HABs at the species level are those paid for by the aquaculture industry.
Marine biologist Shauna Murray — who identified the first sample of karenia mikimotoi at Sydney's University of Technology — says there are only a handful of experts equipped to do this work in Australia. "I think largely there hasn't been that many samples collected, and that's largely because we don't have the infrastructure for it," Murray says. "We've never had a situation like this in the past where we've had to collect a lot of samples rapidly from a harmful algal bloom that's not just affecting the aquaculture industry, but is affecting the wider population." What's causing harmful algae blooms? There are hundreds of phytoplankton species that are not toxic and regularly bloom in South Australia, due to an upwelling of nutrient-rich water from the depths. "All the way from Ningaloo [Reef, off Western Australia] to New Zealand, we have this long string of blooms that often occur every year, and it's why the southern right whales come to feed, and it's why they have their children here, [because] there is this food source," Coleman says.
South Australia is also in the midst of one of the most severe and long-lasting marine heatwaves on record; the state's environmental protection authority says it has created conditions that have allowed karenia mikimotoi to bloom. In other parts of the world karenia mikimotoi blooms at cooler temperatures. But, according to Coleman, the destruction of oyster reefs, seagrasses and other life on the floor of the Spencer and St. Vincent gulfs either side of the Yorke Peninsula has contributed to the imbalance.
"The hope is that if we can restore the benthic life [deep-sea dwelling marine life] in the gulfs," she says. "We will have more fish, we'll have more life; we'll also have water that is clearer and cooler — and it will reduce our vulnerability." SBS News contacted the South Australian government for comment but did not receive a response.

Business as usual at Exmouth after shark, crocodile and Irukandji incidents
The picturesque Ningaloo and Exmouth coasts are best known for swimming with whale sharks, humpback whales, manta rays and turtles, as visitors head north to escape the southern winter. But recently, the region has been plagued with reports of crocodile sightings, shark bites and Irukandji stings — so, is there something in the water? Late last year Exmouth residents reported sightings of crocodiles and great white sharks, while earlier this week two people were hospitalised with Irukandji syndrome after swimming in Ningaloo Marine Park. Irukandji jellyfish are known for their stings, causing severe pain, nausea and vomiting. Irukandji expert and Giffith University PhD candidate Jess Strickland said whether there were more Irukandji around the Ningaloo was up for debate. "It's a bit of a tricky one," she said. "Mainly because we've only just started paying attention and studying them in this part of the world, so there are no long-term data sets." Ms Strickland is studying Irukandji at Ningaloo reef, with the hope of increasing the understanding of the species to inform public safety. She said that while reporting had increased, it did not mean the danger had. "But is that because there are more people in the water, more awareness about Irukandji jellyfish and Irukandji syndrome, and a slightly better reporting system? "Or does it represent a genuine increase in their presence in the area? We don't know." Ms Strickland said warming waters were contributing to marine species experiencing shifting distributions, concerning researchers that stinging jellyfish on the WA coast were moving south. Exmouth local Rusty Ellis volunteers in marine rescue and spends as much time as he can on the water. When asked if he had witnessed more Irukandji in recent years, Mr Ellis was resolute. "No, there's no sort of increase, per se," he said. "If there's a bit of warm water, like we had this year, that comes down from up north, there's a good chance it's going to be bringing the Irukandjis down with it. "With the increased population and the increased numbers of the people swimming out there … more people in the water, there's more chance of an interaction. Exmouth's local population has grown from about 2,400 people in 2011 to just over 3,000 in 2021, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics census. The local population triples at the height of the tourist season and the area is a popular school holiday destination. When it comes to crocodiles and sharks, Mr Ellis said the Parks and Wildlife Service had "done a pretty good job of sorting them out". "There's thousands of sharks out there and they don't very often have interactions with the public," he said. "There's that much other food out there for them that people really don't taste that good." Mr Ellis's message to others is simple. "Just don't be silly."

SA researchers expand baby heel-prick screening to help find rare conditions
When Max was three days old, he was diagnosed with a rare and life-changing condition called phenylketonuria, commonly known as PKU, through a newborn blood screening test. The condition is one of more than 30 which can currently be detected in newborns through heel-prick blood samples to help identify and treat serious health conditions early. Now, researchers in South Australia are working to expand the screening program to detect more than 600 genetic conditions. PKU is an inherited blood disorder which can affect how the body processes protein and can eventually lead to serious health problems if left untreated. "[It's] actually the condition that started the whole newborn screening program in the 1960s," explained South Australian researcher Professor Karin Kassahn. "It's one of the metabolic conditions where the body can't process protein, phenylalanine in particular [which is] a certain amino acid, in the way it usually would … so by picking this up at birth, then the diet can be modified." The heel-prick test method was developed by American microbiologist, Dr Robert Guthrie, whose niece was diagnosed with PKU at 13 months — too late to prevent early brain damage. Since 1960, the program has been rolled out across much of the world as a routine test for newborns — and expanded to be able to accurately and quickly detect more than 30 conditions. Twins, Max and Blake, underwent the screening as newborns. Their parents, Hannah and Robert Macbeth, had no idea PKU existed when Max was first diagnosed. "We'd never heard of it," Ms Macbeth said. "We kind of cried about it until it kind of realistically hit us and we went, 'You know what, we can manage this. We've caught it early'." Mr Macbeth said he was worried his son would have to follow a restricted diet for life. "We're quite a barbecuing family so we love our meats and that sort of thing and entertaining," he said. Thanks to early detection and intervention, Max's protein levels are closely monitored with weekly at-home prick tests, and he uses a medication to help lower his blood phenylalanine levels. "We're very lucky," Ms Macbeth said. "We could have been in all sorts of dramas for him because it can be pretty serious if left undiagnosed." Untreated, PKU can lead to irreversible brain damage and intellectual disability, neurological conditions such as seizures and tremors, and problems with behaviour, emotions, development and health. But for now, things are looking positive. "He'll live a relatively normal life, he might just be a bit different with food at school and stuff," Ms Macbeth said. "It's just managing it and it's quite easy at the moment … he's a happy little soul," Mr Macbeth added. The couple said they thought expanding the testing program would be "brilliant". "If we can do testing that picks up these things when they're little and there are things we can put in place to help reduce [the risk of] something happening in the long run or causing a bigger issue, then we would be mad not to do it," Ms Macbeth said. Professor Kassahn is the principal investigator on the NewbornsInSA study which is combining genomics and metabolomics in a bid to detect more treatable conditions, earlier. "Many of the conditions we screen for are rare, so individually people will probably not have heard of many of them — cystic fibrosis and PKU are probably the more familiar ones, but collectively they actually constitute quite a significant health burden," she said. "They are the primary cause of childhood admissions to hospital and also ongoing health problems. "Early detection allows early intervention and treatment, and just as the current program has really saved thousands of lives, we're hoping by expanding on that program … we can make a difference to the health outcomes for these babies." The researchers are looking for conditions including immune deficiencies, conditions of metabolic dysregulation, congenital deafness, and neurological conditions. Professor Kassahn said the study collaboration between SA Pathology, the Women's and Children's Hospital and the University of Adelaide was "well underway" with 250 families already enrolled, out of their target of 1,000. The team has already made some significant findings — with early intervention now in place for those families to help treat or manage their rare diagnoses. "We've issued five of what we call a 'high chance report' and those would have otherwise been undetected," she explained. "Those families are being managed through the clinical teams at the Women's and Children's Hospital." She said eligible families are still able to take part in the study with enrolment via the NewbornsInSA website.

La Trobe researchers warn gazania garden plant sold at Bunnings is ‘highly invasive'
A popular garden plant sold at Bunnings is even more invasive and potentially dangerous to Australia's natural environment than originally thought, new research has revealed. La Trobe scientists, writing in the Frontiers journal, warn that gazania daisies, a brightly coloured ornamental plant sold in nurseries nationwide, is a 'highly-invasive plant' that is beginning to impact grain production and grasslands across southern Australia. The plant can germinate and thrive in almost all conditions, the report shows, regardless of moisture, temperature or salinity levels. 'Due to its flexible growth requirements, gazania is now widespread and naturalised in a variety of habitats including coastal sand dunes, stream banks, wastelands, open grasslands, along roadsides and on cultivated and irrigated sites,' the report states. 'While gazania has long been considered as an environmental weed in Australia, a trend of 'jumping the fence' has been observed in recent years, infesting grain crop production fields in low-rainfall regions of South Australia. 'The presence of gazania in cropping fields is proving highly problematic, with farmers finding it difficult to control with common herbicides.' The researchers warn the weed is now 'rapidly spreading' across Australia and urgent long-term management strategies are needed to control the invasion. Gazania is native to South Africa and was introduced into Australia in the 1950s and 1970s. Invasive Species Council advocacy manager Imogen Ebsworth said the daisies should be banned from sale immediately. 'Gazanias are the perfect example of an escaped invasive garden plant that needs to be banned from sale,' she said. 'They are already banned in South Australia, but it's clear we need them pulled nationally. 'I urge the nursery industry to act on this new evidence and stop selling it … we've seen this story unfold far too many times. Ornamental plants that turn into unstoppable weeds, costing us billions in control efforts and wiping out native species in the process.' The council estimates more than 30,000 plant species have been imported into Australia for gardening, but 'fewer than a quarter' have been assessed nationally for their weed risk. Weeds cost the country more than $5bn a year in agricultural and environmental damage, the council said, with 'escaped' ornamental plants making up more than 70 per cent of the country's environmental weeds. Garden plants can escape and germinate in the wild via garden waste, lawn clippings and seed dispersal. Bunnings continues to sell gazanias, NewsWire has confirmed. According to the retail giant, each state and territory has its own list of declared weeds and laws and regulations for invasive weeds. The plants Bunnings sells across its stores differ depending on where they are sold and their declaration status. 'Like many nurseries and retailers, we sell a wide range of locally sourced plants across our stores and we work hard to create an assortment that caters to customer preferences and demand,' Bunnings director of merchandise Cam Rist said. 'As always, we closely follow all relevant local biosecurity regulations and the advice of regulators about the plants we sell.' The plant is also sold at other nurseries, including online marketplaces. The council argues 'self-regulation' has not worked and wants a federal government response. 'We've spent decades relying mainly on self-regulation, which just doesn't work,' Ms Ebsworth said. 'You can still legally buy plants that are banned in neighbouring states or overseas. 'Unless governments act, we'll keep selling the next lantana, the next gazania, straight into our backyards and bushland.'
