Sharm El-Sheikh Becomes 1st Egyptian Green City to Join Global ICLEI Network

Egypt marked a significant milestone in its environmental journey as Sharm El-Sheikh was officially declared the first Egyptian green city to join the ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, a global network dedicated to sustainable urban development.
The announcement was made by Minister of Environment0 Yasmine Fouad during a high-level ceremony attended by South Sinai Governor Khaled Mubarak, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Guemar Dieb, and Eng. Mohamed Aliewa, Director of the Green Sharm Project.
Fouad described Sharm El-Sheikh's inclusion in ICLEI as the culmination of a years-long transformation, positioning the city as a national and regional leader in environmental sustainability.
She traced the city's green journey back to 2018, when Egypt hosted the UN Biodiversity Conference, which brought international attention to the rich ecosystems of South Sinai and highlighted the country's commitment to integrating local communities in the management of natural reserves.
Momentum grew further when Sharm El-Sheikh hosted the COP27 UN Climate Conference in 2022. Under President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's directive, the city underwent sweeping upgrades, implementing nearly 40 environmental projects to prepare for the summit and to serve as a model for sustainable tourism.
The minister emphasized that the success of sustainability initiatives hinges on public participation, noting that 'the human being is the foundation of sustainability.' She called on citizens to adopt eco-friendly habits such as recycling, resource conservation, and the use of renewable energy, stressing that environmental change begins with individual choices.
The city's green credentials include major investments in solar power, sustainable transport, and waste management. Among the standout achievements are the installation of solar panels generating 51 megawatts of electricity, the construction of 145 kilometers of bicycle lanes, and the implementation of shared bike systems and electric buses. Community engagement has also played a vital role, particularly in solid waste management and biodiversity protection.
Governor Khaled Mubarak hailed the ICLEI membership as a national accomplishment and a direct result of Egypt's strategic vision for sustainable development. He underscored that the green transformation of Sharm El-Sheikh aligns with South Sinai's sustainable development strategy, endorsed by President El-Sisi in 2024, which aims to position the city as a global hub for green tourism.
'Sharm El-Sheikh is no longer just a tourist destination; it is becoming a blueprint for how cities in the region can thrive economically, socially, and environmentally,' Mubarak said. He pointed to the 'Green Sharm' initiative as a turning point, driven by five integrated pillars: clean energy, waste reduction, sustainable transport, water conservation, and biodiversity.
He also highlighted future plans, including a ban on single-use plastics in 50 hotels, increased support for local initiatives, and expanded partnerships with the private sector and international donors. So far, the city has attracted more than \$19.7 million in green financing, with further investments expected.
In turn, Eng. Mohamed Aliewa, head of the Green Sharm project, described the city's ICLEI membership as a pivotal step toward its transformation into a sustainable city. He noted that Sharm El-Sheikh is now the fourth Arab city to join the international network. Aliewa also unveiled an online portal listing all certified green hotels, dive centers, and eco-friendly facilities — a tool designed to guide tourists seeking sustainable travel options.
UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Guemar Dieb praised the city's achievement and Egypt's broader commitment to sustainability. He described Sharm El-Sheikh's transformation as a model for international green development, noting that the city's hosting of COP27 brought global attention to its environmental efforts and solidified its status as a beacon of climate leadership.
Dieb applauded Fouad's role as Egypt's ministerial envoy to COP and her efforts in coordinating across government agencies to raise environmental standards in the city. 'Sharm El-Sheikh's success is a testament to what's possible when leadership, vision, and international cooperation come together,' he said.

Egypt has unveiled a national tourism investment strategy aimed at attracting 30 million visitors annually by 2031, with expanded hotel capacity, restoration projects, and public-private initiatives. Jun 22, 2025 The Egyptian government has launched a new investment strategy targeting 30 million tourists per year by 2031. The plan was reviewed during a recent cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, where sector-specific goals for tourism and antiquities were discussed. The strategy centres on increasing foreign direct investment by identifying clear opportunities within the tourism sector. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities will lead efforts to monitor and compile data on available projects through a centralised 'investment opportunities bank.' Expanding hotel capacity is a key component of the plan. In 2024 alone, 7,200 new hotel rooms were added across the country—more than half of which were newly constructed. By the end of 2025, the ministry expects to add another 19,000 rooms. The strategy also allocates funding for the development of tourist-focused amenities such as restaurants, cafés, and heritage sites. Over the past five years, the Supreme Council of Antiquities has completed an average of 36 restoration projects annually, and further investments will support similar initiatives. From 2025 through 2031, new investment areas will include theme parks, desert safari experiences, hotel infrastructure upgrades, and the adaptive reuse of archaeological sites through public-private partnerships. The Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade will incorporate these tourism projects into Egypt's national investment map, providing supporting data to help guide potential investors.

Serbian PM visits Egypt's key archaeological and religious sites - Ancient Egypt
During his official visit to Egypt, Serbian Prime Minister Djuro Matsut toured several of the country's prominent archaeological and religious landmarks, accompanied by a delegation that included Serbian ministers and members of parliament. Matsut visited the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC), the Giza Pyramids, and Saint Catherine's Monastery in South Sinai. At the GEM, he toured architectural features such as the Atrium and Grand Staircase and viewed artefacts representing ancient Egyptian civilization. The visit to the NMEC included the main hall, the royal mummies gallery, and the Egyptian textiles exhibition. The delegation continued to the Giza Plateau, where Matsut entered the Great Pyramid and explored the site, learning about the pyramids and Sphinx's architectural and cultural significance. The tour also included Saint Catherine's Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest continuously operating Christian monasteries. The Prime Minister visited the Church of the Transfiguration, the Fatimid-era mosque, and the monastery's library, which houses rare manuscripts, including Serbian texts linked to Saint Sava, an essential figure in Serbian history, highlighting the historical connections between Egypt and Serbia. Serbia's PM Visits GEM, NMEC & Pyramids
Ali abodeshish Dr. Đuro Macut, Prime Minister of Serbia, visited the Grand Egyptian Museum, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, and the Giza Pyramids, accompanied by a high-level delegation including several ministers and members of the Serbian Parliament. At the Grand Egyptian Museum, they were received by Dr. Ahmed Ghoneim, CEO of the Grand Egyptian Museum Authority, who welcomed the delegation. He introduced the museum's history and structure, in addition to its most valuable artifacts. The Serbian Prime Minister and his delegation toured the museum including main exhibition halls, where they received detailed illustrations about the exhibits and the significance of the museum's unique collection. At the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, they were welcomed by Dr. Al-Tayeb Abbas, CEO of the museum, who gave an overview of the museum's unique location, its history, and its exceptional archaeological collections that narrate the story of Egyptian civilization across the ages. He also presented the museum's cultural and social role, and accompanied them on a tour of the main Exhibition Hall, the Royal Mummies Hall, and the Egyptian Textile Hall. The Serbian Prime Minister and his delegation also visited the Giza Pyramids area, where they were welcomed by Mr. Ashraf Mohie El-Din, Director General of Giza Antiquities. He guided them through the archaeological site, including a visit to the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx, during which they met the story of the Pyramids construction. During these visits, the Serbian Prime Minister and his accompanying delegation were keen to take photos at the museums and archaeological sites.
