ECI plans to redefine voting with major initiatives
New Delhi: In a sweeping drive to strengthen electoral management and improve voter facilitation, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has rolled out 21 major initiatives over the past 100 days. The reforms, introduced under the leadership of the 26th Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, showcase a big strategic push for several areas. These include procedural clarity, technological integration, and stakeholder inclusivity in the electoral process, say EC sources.
These steps were charted out during the Conference of Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) held in March 2025. Election Commissioners (ECs) Dr Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr Vivek Joshi were also present on that occasion. The initiatives represent a 'purposeful, pragmatic, and proactive' approach in the first 100 days of the new CEC's tenure, added the sources.
One of the key measures includes reducing the maximum number of voters per polling station from 1,500 to 1,200. The purpose is to reduce congestion and ensure a smoother voting experience. To further improve access, additional polling booths will be established in densely populated areas, particularly in gated communities and high-rise buildings, so that no voter has to travel more than 2 km to cast their vote.

Vijayawada: In a move to bolster the electoral process, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has rolled out 23 new initiatives spanning six key areas — electors, political parties, election staff, legal stakeholders, procedural reforms, and internal enhancements within the commission. During an informal briefing in Velagapudi on Friday, P Pawan, deputy director (media division), said the ECI introduced a first-of-its-kind mobile deposit facility at polling booths. This service, aimed at easing the voting experience, was piloted during the recently held bye-elections for five assembly seats across four states. Among other initiatives, the ECI has increased the number of polling stations and capped the maximum number of voters per station at 1,200. To improve accessibility, additional booths are now being established in high-rise buildings and residential colonies to encourage greater voter participation. Moreover, the ECI held Pan India all-party meetings at the CEO/DEO/ERO levels. "A total of 4,719 meetings, including 40 meetings at the CEO level, 800 at DEO, and 3,879 at ERO levels, were held with over 28,000 representatives from various political parties participating in the meetings," the ECI deputy director added. Drawing attention to the procedural reforms, the ECI official said to resolve the bogus voters issue, the ECI introduced a new mechanism for unique EPIC numbers. Security, surveillance in place for counting of votes tomorrow
Ludhiana: District election officer Himanshu Jain Saturday said elaborate arrangements are in place for the smooth counting of votes polled for the Ludhiana West bypoll. At sharp 7 am on June 23, the counting of votes and postal ballots will commence in the presence of election observers, candidates, and their authorised representatives. An official statement said robust security measures, including the deployment of paramilitary forces at the counting centres to safeguard electronic voting machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines, have been implemented. The entire process is being continuously monitored through CCTV surveillance. The DEO emphasised that entry to the counting centres will be strictly regulated, allowing only candidates, their representatives, media personnel, and authorised individuals with valid identity cards issued by the ECI. Fourteen candidates are in the fray for the seat, including AAP's Sanjeev Arora, Congress' Bharat Bhushan Ashu, BJP's Jiwan Gupta, and SAD's advocate Parupkar Singh Ghuman. Chief electoral officer Sibin C Thursday said the voter turnout, as per data uploaded till 7pm on the voting day, was 51.33%. As part of a new initiative, polling data was uploaded on the ECINET app by the presiding officers at the respective polling stations. A total of 194 polling stations were set up. Besides the provision of assured minimum facilities at each polling station, for the first time, a mobile deposit facility was created at the entrance of all polling stations.

School turns pink to teach democracy during student polls
Mangaluru: In a display of creativity and learning, government high school, Machina, in Belthangady taluk, recently transformed into a pink-themed polling centre to conduct its student parliament elections. The unique initiative aims to instil democratic values among students, while promoting gender sensitivity. Inspired by the Election Commission of India's Pink Booth concept, where polling stations are entirely managed by women to encourage female voter participation, the school adopted the model for its campus elections. The idea was brought to life by Venkappa B, the school's social science teacher, with support from staff and students. With 172 students from classes 9 and 10, including 96 girls and 76 boys, the entire election process mirrored that of a real-life democratic setup. The campus was decked in pink, from table covers and chairs to the attire of teachers acting as polling officers, bringing to light the school's commitment to creating a child-friendly and gender-aware environment.
