From composer to global guitar star: Jesse Cook reflects on his unlikely journey
After electrifying audiences in Dubai and Abu Dhabi with back-to-back weekend concerts, genre-defying guitarist Jesse Cook sat down with Khaleej Times to reflect not just on the tour, but on the unexpected path that led him there. From childhood flamenco records in Canada to a breakout album he never expected to sell, Cook's story is as layered as the music he creates. "My earliest memories would be maybe when I was four or five in Canada," he recalled. "We had a stereo in our house and my mum had brought all these records back from France. She had these Manitas de Plata records - a flamenco guitarist from the Camargue region of France. I remember putting them on and loving them.' It was the start of what he now sees as a series of signs pointing him toward flamenco. "My mum was trying to find a guitar teacher because she knew I loved the guitar. I had a little toy guitar... The first teacher I had was a flamenco player. So the first pieces I learned were flamenco." By the time he was a teenager, fate intervened again. His father retired to Arles in the south of France, in a neighbourhood Cook described as "the gypsy area". The family's neighbour? Nicolas Reyes, lead singer of the Gipsy Kings. "It wasn't just the neighbours. Kids out in the street would be playing that gypsy style where they're pounding the guitar like a percussionist. You didn't see that in Canada. I was like, what is that?" Yet Cook's relationship with the guitar wasn't always smooth. At 13, he walked away from it altogether. "I was getting a lot of pressure to play classical guitar and to do competitions. I just wanted to play basketball. It was hard to give it up, because it was one of the few things I was really good at.' A casual moment brought him back: a friend wanted to learn the guitar, and Cook offered to help. "He didn't even know I played. I started showing him and I saw how much fun he was having. I thought, oh yeah, guitar can be fun." Years later, having trained in classical and jazz at top schools, including the Royal Conservatory and Berklee, Cook was working steadily as a composer when he wrote a piece for local television. "Every time they played it, the switchboard would light up... People were phoning, trying to find out what that music was. And I kept saying, I'm a composer, I don't do music for the public.' But the calls kept coming. By the end of that year, in 1994, he decided to record an album. He played all the instruments and mixed it himself. "I remember going to those places where you could order CDs. They asked how many I wanted. I said, what's the smallest amount? They said 500. I said, let's get 500. They said, for pennies more, you could have 1,000. I said, I'm never going to sell 1,000... they'll be in my basement for the rest of my life." Instead, Tempest sold out immediately. "I did a radio interview and a TV performance on the first day. Instantly, they were gone. Then the distributor said, we need 2,000 more. I said, I can't afford to make more. They said, we'll give you the money.' The album climbed the Billboard charts, and by that summer Cook was playing the Catalina Jazz Festival in California. "They said, you can play during the intermission at the bar. I thought, what a waste of time. But once we started playing, people came rushing in. There was a line outside. By the end of the weekend, the head of the festival asked me to play in the All-Star Jam." Before his name was even announced, he received a standing ovation. Despite three decades of touring and recording since then, Cook said his music continues to evolve. "What I play now is a little bit of everything mixed together. It's not really flamenco. It's a kind of fusion." Even the flamenco community has taken notice. "Spanish websites are starting to talk about me as an important figure in flamenco. I always feel like, who am I? I don't live in Spain... But any music, to live, has to change. Perhaps it's because I'm not from Spain and doing something different that it helps flamenco in some way. I'm part of the flamenco diaspora." The cultural crossovers have not gone unnoticed in the Middle East. One of Cook's most requested tracks in the region is his reinterpretation of the Arabic classic Qadduka Al-Mayyas, which he adapted after hearing a stripped-down version by Egyptian and Palestinian-Canadian friends. "I loved it. I started adding guitars, drums, strings... I was thinking, that could be a rumba." In 2008, Cook performed at the Dubai Jazz Festival unaware the song had found an audience here. "We didn't put it on the list. After the concert, people asked, 'Why didn't you do the song?' We said, what song? They said, the song!' The same happened during this tour. Just hours before taking the Abu Dhabi stage on Saturday night, violinist Fethi Nadjem was Googling the lyrics backstage. Despite the last-minute scramble, the performance was a standout moment of the night. As Fethi sang the Arabic lyrics and Sherine Tohamy accompanied on the oud, the crowd erupted dancing, clapping and cheering through the entire number. Cook performed alongside a five-piece band that included guitarist Matt Sellick, bassist Dan Minchom, drummer Matias Recharte, and special musical guest Sherine Tohamy on oud in Abu Dhabi. Despite his international reach, Cook remains something of an anomaly in today's music scene. "Most people listen to pop music with a singer. People ask, who's the singer in your band? And I go, there isn't one. That makes it hard to describe. But the very thing that makes it hard to define is also what makes it last.' Asked why his music resonates so strongly across the region, his largest fanbase on Instagram is in Iran, where he's never performed, he cited musical history. "The music of the Middle East is in the DNA of flamenco. When you take flamenco and play it with oud, it just works. There's some connection." Cook pointed to Ziryab, a 9th-century musician who migrated from Baghdad to Andalusia and revolutionised music in the region. "When he arrived in southern Spain, it was like the Beatles showed up. People went crazy for him. He influenced music, fashion, even hygiene. Flamenco later absorbed that Andalusian sound created under his influence.' He added that the gypsies arrived in Spain 500 years after Ziryab and picked up the Andalusian musical traditions that eventually gave birth to flamenco. "So, for me, the music of the Middle East is in flamenco's DNA. It's already there." During the Covid-19 lockdowns, Cook launched a self-directed video series, reinterpreting older compositions and creating new ones in his home studio. One of the earliest tracks he revisited became an unexpected fan favourite - and literally broke his guitar. 'I just sat down and thought, since it's just me, I won't do drums and bass and everything. I'll just play,' he said. 'And I'm having a great old time, it's sounding good… and then I look at the guitar and I realise this crack has been forming all the way down. I'd been hitting the guitar too hard.' The song, eventually titled Tormenta, made it onto his Libre album in a fully arranged version. Cook is now taking the summer off to rest and record on a private island he owns in Canada. "Not in a billionaire kind of way," he laughed. "In Canada, a regular person can own an island. I'm going to take my boat, go out there, and make some music." After 30 years on stage, that DIY spirit hasn't changed. Nor has the question: what exactly is Jesse Cook's music? Even he can't answer that. "You kind of have to hear it to know what it is. If you like it, I'm the only one doing that.' A platinum-selling artist and Juno Award winner, Cook has featured in five PBS television specials, showcasing his virtuosity and creative range. Beyond critical praise, his broad cross-cultural appeal is evident in his digital footprint, with more than 900 million streams and views across platforms—a number that continues to grow by over 85 million each year.

IWC Schaffhausen takes pole position in F1:The Movie
IWC Schaffhausen has shared in the glory - as well as the formidable demands of - some of the most iconic occasions in modern motor sport. Timepieces crafted by the Swiss luxury watchmaker have also featured on famous wrists in plenty of thrilling cinema moments. Blending refinement with pioneering innovation and engineering, it is arguably the world's greatest race competition - Formula One - with which IWC is best associated. Both inimitable brands share essential and pivotal traits, such as precision, performance, and finesse. These have ideally placed IWC Schaffhausen as Official Engineering Partner of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team - since 2013. It is a potent and deep-rooted relationship with elite motorsport that is inspirational and all the while aspirational. And IWC's profile in global motor sport is set to be further elevated as it bridges the race circuit and cinema courtesy of F1: The Movie. Scheduled for international release on Wednesday, the high-octane film stars Brad Pitt and has seven-time Formula One champion and former Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton among its co-producers. IWC coincides the launch of F1: The Movie with three iconic additions to its revered catalogue, duly celebrating its partnership with the Apple Original Film release and one of the world's most dazzling, adrenalin-filled sports. The trio of Pilot's Chronographs were inspired by the film's fictional APXGP team and further cement the watchmaker's starring role on both track - where it describes racing as in its DNA - and in the film. There is likely to be little mistaking IWC's positioning as both sponsor and the official watch choice of the on-screen team; its branding features on the race cars, as well as driver race suits and helmets, team uniforms, and in the APXGP garage. In fact, the new timepieces themselves - with design colour codes and details inspired by the team colour - are very much part of the action. Most notably, perhaps, the Pilot's Watch Performance Chronograph 41 (Ref IW388309), which is sported by audacious young driver Joshua Pearce (played by British actor Damson Idris). The watch is a horologist's delight. It features an 18-carat 5N gold case with sapphire case back, a black lacquered dial and a black ceramic tachymeter bezel. The case, pushers and crown - also crafted from 18-carat 5N gold - are combined with gold-plated, hand-polished appliques and gold-plated hands, filled with white Super-LumiNova. The black dial, with lacquer finish, is the result of a highly engineered production process, says IWC, with the totalizers at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock individually finished and printed. In a multimillion-dollar sport where engineering excellence is central to a Formula One team and the success of its drivers, the timepiece makes for a stylish choice by Pearce, the fictional rookie mentored by veteran Sonny Hayes (Pitt), who leaves retirement for a challenging return to the track. Other examples from IWC's Pilot's Watches collection are worn by different APXGP characters in the movie, partly filmed on Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina Circuit. Jostling for pole position on screen, the Pilot's Watch Chronograph APXGP (Ref. IW378009) features a stainless-steel case with a diameter of 43mm, while the Pilot's Watch Chronograph 41 APXGP (Ref. IW388116) is housed in a 41-millimetre stainless steel case. Both chronographs are dedicated to the fictional 11th team on the grid, APXGP, and yield a design with black, gold and white elements. They are equipped with tinted sapphire case backs, featuring the APXGP logo printed in gold. Stainless steel cases are combined with black dials, printed with white numerals and golden minute markers, while minute and hour hands, and the hands in the subdials, are gold-plated and filled with white Super-LumiNova. Water resistant to 10 bar, these watches are fitted with black rubber straps featuring a laser engraving to commemorate APXGP. All three APXGP editions include IWC's EasX-Change system, enabling the wearer to change straps with pit stop speed, sans tools and at the touch of a button. It is yet more pioneering innovation that captures the spirit of F1 performance while honouring IWC's enduring support for the fastest race competition on the planet. IWC has always been driven by a spirit of innovation, combining Swiss precision with cutting-edge materials to create timepieces that stand the test of time. Its partnerships with leading motorsport teams are a testament to shared values of performance, precision, and pushing the limits of what's possible. There's little doubt these Pilot's Chronographs will appeal to discerning watch collectors and enthusiasts - as well as affluent film buffs with a taste for IWC's passion for timeless design. Esports World Cup 2025 explained: Post Malone, Cristiano Ronaldo and a $70 million prize pool
Saudi Arabia's capital Riyadh is preparing to host the world's biggest gaming tournament, the Esports World Cup, for the second time in a row. With more games and higher prize money, the event is set to reinforce Saudi Arabia's growing role as an important player in international esports. Running across seven weeks this summer, the event will not only showcase elite-level competitive gaming, but also deliver a festival-style experience for fans, content creators and industry professionals. Here is everything you need to know about the contest and its key players. Dates and venue The Esports World Cup 2025 will take place from July 7 to August 24 in Boulevard City, Riyadh. The tournament will be held at the brand-new SEF Arena, a purpose-built venue spanning 34,000 square metres. The complex has five halls, including a main arena with a capacity of 2,200 spectators. There are also dedicated areas for professional team training, along with multiple fan-focused spaces, cafes and content creator zones. The size and scope of the venue marks a significant leap forward from last year and reflects Saudi Arabia's aim to become a global hub for esports and gaming culture. Post Malone to perform at opening ceremony American musician Post Malone will headline the Esports World Cup's opening ceremony on July 10. The singer behind hits such as Circles, Rockstar, Congratulations and Sunflower, has recently turned to country music, scoring a major hit with Morgan Wallen called I Had Some Help. Malone will return to the region on December 5 to perform as part of the F1 after-race concert series in Abu Dhabi. Record-breaking prize pool The 2025 tournament features a $70 million prize pool, the largest in esports history. It surpasses last year's total of $62.5 million, showing the growth and ambition of the competition. The prize money is divided across multiple streams: $27 million is reserved for the Club Championship, with the top club receiving $7 million. A further $38 million will be distributed across 25 different game tournaments, while $450,000 is set aside for MVP awards, recognising individual performances. About $5 million will go towards qualifier tournaments leading up to the main event. Global ambassador Cristiano Ronaldo The tournament has appointed Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo as the official global ambassador for 2025. The EWC Foundation has also announced several major partnerships, including a long-term agreement with Riot Games, covering League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics and Valorant until at least 2027. Meanwhile, has been named as the official platform for the chess component of the tournament. Saudi Arabia will also host the first-ever Olympic Esports Games, an initiative supported by the International Olympic Committee. Expanded game line-up The 2025 Esports World Cup will feature 25 tournaments across 24 titles, offering a mix of strategy, shooter, sports, fighting and mobile games. Additions this year include: Chess, in a 10-minute blitz format, with grandmasters such as Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura expected to appear; Valorant and Crossfire, both added after the signing of a multiyear deal with Riot Games; and Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, marking a return for SNK's classic fighting franchise. Returning favourites include: Dota 2, League of Legends, Counter-Strike 2, Call of Duty: Warzone and Black Ops 6, EA Sports FC 25, Street Fighter 6, PUBG Mobile, Battlegrounds Mobile India, Apex Legends, StarCraft II, Rocket League, Tekken 8, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege. The selection covers both competitive popularity and global appeal, making it an international event for players and spectators alike. Club Championship At the heart of the event is the Club Championship, a format designed to encourage cross-game performance and consistent success. About 200 clubs and 2,000 players from more than 100 countries are expected to take part. To win the Club Championship, a team must win at least one tournament and finish in the top eight in at least two additional events. This system rewards both dominance and versatility, encouraging clubs to build squads across multiple games. Last year, Team Falcons, based in Saudi Arabia, won the Club Championship, with Team Liquid from the Netherlands and Team BDS from Switzerland finishing second and third respectively. With a more substantial pool of teams this year, the race for the Club Championship title is expected to garner international attention from esports fans. Fan experience and industry summit The Esports World Cup will also host a number of events for visitors and fans to enjoy alongside sitting in on the action. Visitors can look forward to cosplay contests, fan meetups, livestreams, creator booths, gaming challenges, community events, live performances and merchandise zones. Towards the end of the tournament, the New Global Sport Conference will be held on August 23 and 24, inviting industry leaders from across gaming, technology, media and sport to participate in networking opportunities. Ticket prices Tickets are currently on sale with options including daily passes, multi-week access, and VIP hospitality packages. Prices start at 999 Saudi riyals ($266) for weekly passes. Organisers have said that prices for daily passes will be revealed closer to the start of the event.
