Anwar: Asean, GCC & China can drive trillions in growth together
KUALA LUMPUR: The combined Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Asean, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and China — totalling USD$24.87 trillion (RM105.3 trillion) — presents vast opportunities to synergise markets, deepen innovation, and promote cross-regional investment.
Asean Chairman and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that by strengthening cooperation, Asean, the GCC, and China could lay the foundation for stable, resilient, and sustainable growth.
"Asean, the GCC, and China collectively represent a combined GDP of USD$24.87 trillion and a population of some 2.15 billion. This collective scale offers significant opportunities to synergise our markets, enhance innovation, and foster cross-regional investment.
"By deepening collaboration in these areas, we can build the foundation for growth that is stable, resilient, and sustainable," he said in his opening remarks at the inaugural Asean-GCC-China Summit here today.
Anwar said that the total trade volume between the three parties reflected immense untapped potential.
"In 2023, Asean's GDP reached USD$3.8 trillion, making it the world's fifth-largest economy. That same year, total trade with the GCC stood at USD$130.7 billion, with foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows of USD$390.2 million.
"China, meanwhile, remained Asean's largest trading partner, with USD$696.7 billion in trade and USD$17.3 billion in FDI. These figures not only demonstrate robust existing linkages but also reveal considerable untapped potential," he said.
Anwar expressed hope that the summit would mark a new chapter in Asean's outward-facing engagement, exemplifying what could be achieved when nations collaborate with mutual respect and shared purpose.
While existing mechanisms are already well-established, he said this new format provided a platform to explore deeper collaboration and align collective strengths.
"Despite ongoing challenges, I remain confident that Asean, the GCC, and China can draw upon our unique attributes to shape a future that is more connected, more resilient, and more prosperous for generations to come.
"Asean has long shown that regionalism — anchored in consensus, mutual respect, and openness — can succeed. We have benefited from enduring partnerships with the GCC and China. Today, we have the opportunity to elevate these ties.
"With this spirit of optimism and shared commitment, I look forward to productive and meaningful discussions today," he added.
Anwar said that ties between Asean, the GCC, and China were historically rich and enduring, with longstanding connections through commerce, culture, and the exchange of ideas.
"We have Makkah and Madinah — centres for millions of pilgrims — and trade hubs such as Oman, which historically served as key links through the region and the GCC.
"Similarly, historic centres like Melaka exemplified this tradition, serving as strategic crossroads that linked East and West, demonstrating the power of openness, exchange, and strategic connectivity.
"Today, Asean carries that legacy forward on a much broader scale, emerging as a dynamic intersection of global commerce, innovation, and opportunity," he said.
He added that the summit's theme — 'Synergising Economic Opportunities Towards Shared Prosperity' — resonated strongly with Malaysia's Asean Chairmanship, which emphasises 'Inclusivity and Sustainability'.

Malaysia Urges ASEAN-OIC Collaboration On Myanmar Crisis
KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 (Bernama) – As ASEAN Chair, Malaysia has called for enhanced collaboration between ASEAN and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to address the deteriorating situation in Myanmar, with a focus on ending violence, alleviating the humanitarian crisis, and supporting long-term peace in the country. Delivering a statement at the OIC Contact Group on Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar in Istanbul, Turkiye on Sunday, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Malaysia is deeply concerned about the situation in Myanmar, particularly the plight of displaced Rohingyas, and stressed the need to ensure their safe, dignified and sustained return to Rakhine State. He added that it is crucial to create a safe, secure and enabling environment for the timely and effective distribution of aid to all affected communities, following the serious humanitarian crisis caused by the March 28 earthquake. bootstrap slideshow 'Malaysia is committed to taking a constructive approach to address the situation in Myanmar. We have identified three key priorities, which are to promote inclusive political dialogue; ensure the cessation of violence; and to scale up humanitarian assistance. Anti-corruption rally ends with burning of placard in KK
The burning of a caricature of the Prime Minister during the anti-corruption rally at Lintasan Deasoka on Sunday morning KOTA KINABALU (June 22): The two-day Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally, organized by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students, concluded controversially on Sunday when protesters burned a large placard, featuring a caricature of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, at Lintasan Deasoka near Gaya Street on Sunday morning. The banner also carried the phrase 'Madani Protector of Sabah Corruption'. Suara Mahasiswa UMS president Muhamad Fadhil Muhamad Kasim said the symbolic burning of a caricature of the Prime Minister was done in an orderly and safe manner. In a statement on Sunday, he said the secretariat had ensured an appropriate radius between the position of the symbolic burning and the audience who witnessed the historic moment. After the burning, he said they cleaned the area with soap and brooms, collected surrounding garbage and ensured the location was clean enough before leaving. 'The biggest message of this gathering is to strongly criticize the hypocritical leadership of Madani against institutional reform and the promise to eradicate corruption. 'Recently, Anwar Ibrahim announced a challenge to the youth to fight corruption. Today is proof that students with full idealism and courage have taken up the challenge to fight corruption in Sabah,' Muhamad Fadhil said. Kota Kinabalu police confirmed an investigation is pending and will issue a statement on Monday. Parti Warisan has denied involvement in the rally. Meanwhile, independent youth group Mandiri has criticised the police for allegedly failing to facilitate the anti-corruption rally on June 21. Mandiri coordinator Wong KuKui said the group was made to understand that police officers present during the peaceful assembly did not fulfil their responsibilities, despite having received prior notice of the event. 'This is not a minor oversight — it is a dereliction of duty that could endanger lives. In the event of injury or casualty, the police must bear full responsibility,' he said. Wong also claimed that Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) had ordered the removal of banners, even though the rally was held in a public space. 'This reflects DBKK's ignorance or refusal to acknowledge legal developments, especially the moratorium on Section 11 of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 (APA 2012), which was announced by Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament on February 13, 2025,' he said. The moratorium suspends the requirement to obtain permission from venue owners to hold assemblies, which Wong described as a progressive move to safeguard the public's right to peaceful assembly. 'Unfortunately, enforcement agencies continue to defy this legal shift,' he added. Wong further revealed that Mandiri had received reports of a student's vehicle being doused with a liquid suspected to be chemical near the rally site. Mandiri is calling for an immediate investigation into the alleged provocations and sabotage targeting rally participants. The group also urged authorities to guarantee the safety and democratic rights of participants at future public gatherings. Wong affirmed that Mandiri stands in full solidarity with all rally participants who spoke out against corruption, demanded accountability, and advocated for a fairer future.
