New safety features worth £250k installed at M1 service stations

BBC News15-03-2025

Safety measures worth £250,000 have been installed at two service stations on the M1.Watford Gap and Northampton Services, both in Northamptonshire, now have advanced automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) systems, more CCTV cameras and better fencing. The work has been funded by the county's police, fire and crime commissioner (PFCC).Roadchef, which owns the two sites, said the improvements would create "safer, more secure environments for drivers".
Watford Gap Services opened in 1959 and became a meeting place for musicians in the 1960s, including The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. The 50th anniversary of the site inspired a musical in 2009.Northampton Services, formerly known as Rothersthorpe, was originally due to be the UK's first service station, but did not open until 1979.
A Crimestoppers campaign has been launched to publicise information via leaflets and display boards on how to secure vehicles and prevent them being targeted by criminals. The PFCC's office applied for the funding from the government's Safer Streets scheme.
Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Danielle Stone said: "This will make the venues more secure and help to deter criminal behaviour."This will then free up our police officers to spend more time being visible and accessible in their local communities."Darrell Wade, from Roadchef, said: "These upgrades are vital in creating safer, more secure environments for drivers."

Zak Starkey teams up with Paul McCartney and John Lennon's sons as they work on 'The Beatles kids' after he was sacked from The Who again

Zak Starkey has teamed up with Paul McCartney and John Lennon 's sons as they work on 'The Beatles kids' after he was sacked from The Who again. The son of Ringo Starr, 59, was fired from the band last month, just one month after he was sacked then quickly reinstated. He has now revealed that he is working on new music with Sean Lennon and James McCartney and they have collaborated on a song. Speaking in a new interview, Zak admitted that the idea was something he had avoided for fears of being 'judged forever.' He told The Sun: 'I thought it was a daft idea. But I've got to know James well over the last decade and Sean over the last five years and we have become great friends. 'Their music is great. I had a track called Rip Off and as we were communicating a lot I asked them to contribute.' Zak added: 'We were nervous in case there was no chemistry but there was loads and it sounded great. James' voice powerful it nearly blew me off my seat.' Sean, 48, is the second child of the late icon John, while James, 47, is Paul's only son and youngest child, who he welcomed with his late ex-wife Linda Eastman. In May, The Who guitarist Pete Townshend took to Instagram to announce that Zak, drummer since 1996, was no longer part of the band. But Zak quickly took to his own social media to claim that his departure was not a mutual decision and that he was fired from the band. His sacking comes just months ahead of the legendary bands farewell tour across North America and Pete revealed Scott Devours will replace him on drums. The statement from Pete read: 'After many years of great work on drums from Zak the time has come for a change. A poignant time. Zak has lots of new projects in hand and I wish him the best.' In a second post, Pete and Roger Daltrey added: 'The Who are heading for retirement, whereas Zak is 20yrs younger and has a great future with his new band and other exciting projects. 'He needs to devote all his energy into making it all a success. We both wish him all the luck in the world.' They continued: 'Scott Devours – Who fans will know him from Roger's solo shows – will be replacing Zak. We hope all our fans will welcome him. Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey'. Resharing The Who's post, Zak hit back: 'I was fired two weeks after reinstatement and asked to make a statement saying I had quit the who to pursue my other musical endeavours this would be a lie. 'I love the who and would never had quit. So I didn't make the statement ….quitting The Who would also have let down the countless amazing people who stood up for me (thank you all a million times over and more) thru the weeks of mayhem of me going 'in an out an in an out an in an out like a bleedin squeezebox x. 'To clarify "other projects" yes I do have other projects and always have. The Who have been sporadic or minimalist in touring most years apart from a two extensive tours in 2000 and 2006/7.' Zak continued to list his other previous projects before adding: 'Releasing singles but not touring cos members are so busy. None of this has ever interfered with The Who and was never a problem for them. 'The lie is or would have been that I quit The Who- I didn't. I love the who and everyone in it.' Zak again took to his Instagram account to share that his version of events had been contradicted yet again after a phone call with The Who singer-guitarist Roger. Zak said Roger told him he hadn't actually been fired and instead 'retired to work on his own projects'. Resharing The Who's post, Zak hit back: 'I was fired and asked to make a statement saying I had quit the who to pursue my other musical endeavours this would be a lie' He wrote: 'NOISE&CONFUSION!!!! I had a great phone chat with Roger at the end of last week which truly confused both of us!!! 'Rog said I hadn't been 'fired'…I had been 'retired' to work n my own projects. I explained to Rog that I have just spent nearly 8 weeks at my studio in Jamaica completing these projects, that my group Mantra Of The Cosmos was releasing one single at the beginning of June and after that had run its course ( usually 5/6 weeks ) I was completely available for the foreseeable future…. 'Rog said "Oh!" and we kind of left it there- On good terms and great friends as we have always been. 'Gotta love these guys. As my mum used to say "The mind boggles!!!" XXX.' It comes weeks after The Who .

It was when his Mantra bandmate Shaun Ryder got involved that the magic really happened though, with Zak adding: 'Within five minutes he showed us that the only lyrical genius in the room was Shaun Ryder. 'He blew our minds and he wrote and recorded it in less than ten minutes. It's a pop song but it's overtly political dance music.' 'I explained that after Sean and James' contribution the musical table was full and that nothing weird or personal was going down. The Beatles movie cast finally revealed - and who they will play 'He got it and it's all cool. He's got his own great record out at the moment, too.' Advertisement It's obvious that the only reason she's addressed it now is because it's all anyone on social media can talk about. But why the hell do they care so much? Lizzo is one of the most energetic and fun singers I've watched live and when I've seen her performing, I couldn't give a flying f**k what she looks like – I'm just there to listen to her music. Let's be frank, nearly every celebrity on the planet is using a fat jab to stay slim. And I don't know anyone who would turn that option down if they had the chance. Most celebs have had Botox, fillers and the rest, and the majority of them will at some point book in for their umpteenth facelift when they will end up looking younger than their own kids – I'm looking at you Kris Jenner. Advertisement But Kris certainly doesn't care – let's face it, she's got skin that is so soft it would rival a newborn baby's arse. And neither should Lizzo. Be fat, be thin, have facial features that wouldn't even quiver in a 9.5 magnitude earthquake – you only get one life.

Dartford Charge will go up for drivers - here's how much it rises

The Dartford Crossing charge is set to increase later on this year to help ease congestion, the Department for Transport has announced. The fee, which is paid by motorists driving on the A282 road between Dartford in Kent in the south and Thurrock in Essex in the north, is used to maintain upkeep of the bridge. From September 1, the Dartford Crossing charge will increase from £2.50 to £3.50 for cars, minibuses and motorhomes, while coaches, buses and vans will be charged £4.20 instead of the previous price of £3. The Dartford Crossing charge for lorries and large vehicles with more than two axles will increase from £6 to £8.40. Motorbikes and mopeds can continue to cross for free. The route is the UK's busiest crossing as it sees an average of 150,000 vehicles a day, but it was built for 135,000, National Highways said. On some days, traffic reaches 180,000, and the crossing is no stranger to traffic gridlock and severe delays. Drivers using the crossing, which is made up of the Queen Elizabeth II bridge southbound and two tunnels northbound, have to pay the Dart Charge every time they use it. The Dart Charge has faced criticism from motorists who have been wrongly fined for crossings they never made, including a doctor who was fined 34 times after the ANPR cameras mistook another number plate as hers. Residents have been able to cross as many times as they want for £20 a year, but that will also increase this autumn to £25. Announcing the Dartford Crossing charge increase, junior transport minister, Lilian Greenwood, said the traffic levels are 'well in excess of the crossing's design capacity, causing delays for drivers using the crossing, congestion and journey disruption to drivers on the M25 and a range of knock-on impacts for local communities.' The crossing charges have increased steadily since the four-lane bridge opened in 1991, shortly after the M25 opened. The tunnels, which opened in 1963 and 1980 respectively, originally cost two shillings and sixpence to use. It is thought the charges were intended to be phased out when the construction costs were covered, but the charges have become a permanent fixture. More Trending People in the area have told Metro that when an incident blocks traffic at Dartford, the nearby local roads become mayhem with diverted vehicles navigating narrow roads. One resident said it is not uncommon to see huge lorries clogging up the village roads when Dartford traffic is diverted. In a bid to take pressure off the Dartford, National Highways wants to build a second crossing nearby, the Lower Thames Crossing. The £10 billion Lower Thames Crossing was awarded £590 million in government funding after the project was approved by planners.
