Why Guy Sebastian discussed his tour with Taylor Swift in court as his former manager faces trial
Guy Sebastian has told a court how thrilled he was to be the opening act for global pop superstar Taylor Swift during her Australian Red Tour.
But what was meant to be a career highlight soon became the centre of a messy legal battle with his former manager.
The Aussie Idol winner, 42, took the stand in the NSW District Court on Wednesday, recounting how 'honoured' he felt when ex-manager Titus Day informed him in 2013 that he'd secured the coveted support slot on Swift's stadium shows Down Under.
'I was alerted to the fact that I was to be supporting Taylor Swift, which obviously is a big deal – Taylor's a huge artist, and it was a massive get to get that tour,' Mr Sebastian said, according to Newswire.
'I was really honoured.'

The court heard that unlike his own tours - which Sebastian admitted 'weren't fruitful' financially, due to him footing the bill - the Swift gigs were set to be lucrative, with a guaranteed payment locked in.
'This was an opportunity where it was a guaranteed sum I was being paid,' he explained.
Keen to put on a standout performance, Sebastian said he flew in a close friend to join him on stage and spent a significant amount assembling a high-calibre band.
'I really made that band as slamming as I possibly could and wanted to do a really good job of this,' he said.
While he was due to earn around $500,000 from the tour, Sebastian said approximately $180,000 went towards costs, including his hand-picked band.
However, things quickly turned sour when Sebastian discovered a chunk of that money was allegedly never paid to him.
The court heard a total of $494,000 was transferred by a booking agent into the account of Mr Day's company, 6 Degrees Management.
The Crown alleges that after taking his $59,000 commission, Day should have passed on $435,000 to Sebastian.
Instead, it's claimed the singer only received $247,500 – meaning a further $187,000 allegedly went missing.
Sebastian told the court he was initially led to believe the remainder of the funds would follow shortly after.
'Within seven or 14 days, but it was clearly indicated to us when the $247,000 was transferred that there was going to be a reconciliation on weeks of the whole tour … we were told that the full reconciliation would be done really soon,' he said.
He added that his bookkeepers repeatedly requested those figures so they could complete his tax return, but the full breakdown 'was never received'.
Despite the missing money, Sebastian admitted he didn't immediately push for answers.
'In the years following, I assumed it was taken care of,' he told the court.
Day's barrister, Thomas Woods, last week conceded that his client did fail to pass on money to Sebastian on some occasions, but claimed the core legal issue is whether the conduct was criminal.
'For many of the charges, the real question is not going to be whether my client failed to transfer the money to Sebastian but whether his failure to do that was criminal,' Woods said.
Sebastian signed with Mr Day's 6 Degrees management company in 2006 – three years after winning Australian Idol. The pair had previously worked together at 22 Management.
While the relationship began positively, Sebastian told the court that ongoing issues over statements and payments eventually led to him cutting ties with Day in 2017.
The singer launched Federal Court action against his ex-manager the following year. Day later filed a counterclaim.

Thynne - described as a 'menace' by the judge - was sentenced to a maximum three years in prison - but was allowed to leave custody given the 349 days he had already served at Queensland 's high security Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre. A medical report tendered during the sentencing proceedings claimed that Thynne had diminished emotional control and impaired judgement due to severe steroid use since the age of 16. The court was told Thynne had suffered a serious steroid addiction between the ages of 16 and 21 and had lost 20kg while in custody due to no longer using performance-enhancing drugs. Thynne's barrister, Greg McGuire, said his client had been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, major depressive disorder and bipolar and had once attempted to self-harm in custody. The court heard claims that Thynne had an unstable home life in his adolescent years having suffered 'physical and emotional abuse at the hands of his mother'. Thynne's offences began in November 2023. In March last year, Thynne sexually assaulted the woman he was in relationship with after she told him she didn't want to have sex. The Crown prosecutor told the court that Thynne pushed her onto the bed and ripped off her pants. The court heard that during one incident, the then-couple were watching a movie together when Thynne hit her in the head and called her a 'c**t'. On another occasion he pushed her against a wall and choked her while saying 'I own you'. McGuire said the couple had an 'odd' relationship with both of them being bodybuilders who used steroids during their relationship. Thynne's parents Nathaniel Thynne and mother Nathalie Stanley did not appear to be in court during the sentencing. Henri's victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, bravely read out a victim impact statement. She then appeared on Channel Nine's A Current Affair that evening where she detailed another harrowing incident that occurred while Thynne was behind bars. She claimed that she was set upon and 'absolutely beaten up' by three men while heading home one evening. 'I got out and these guys just got out of the car and started walking towards me.' The victim then claimed she was assaulted by the men, who punched her in the face and even attacked her with a razor blade. 'I got absolutely beaten up by these three guys,' she said. 'I got my face smashed in.' 'They ripped my trakkies open and got a razor blade and carved a H into my leg.' The victim then claimed after the attack she was left by the side of the road in the rain. When ACA asked the victim if she knew her attackers, she claimed she had a good idea. 'We're all pretty certain - we know what's happening. We're just trying to link it to those certain people,' she said. Daily Mail Australia is not suggesting Henri Thynne was involved in the alleged attack. Elsewhere in the interview, the victim admitted that she feared for her life during her time with Henri. 'On the night he strangled me really badly, I thought I was going to die,' she said. She also opened up about her relationship with Thynne, saying that his increasingly controlling behaviour - which included the need for the victim to seek permission to have her hair and nails done - quickly turned physical. 'I was getting ready to go to the gym with him. I said to him, do you like my leggings? And he like flipped off and got so angry at me, pushed me on the bed and then he just ripped my pants,' she said. 'He was saying things like, "If you want to dress like a s*** then I'll treat you like a s***". She claimed that she was attacked and 'absolutely beaten up' by three men while heading home from the gym one evening The victim's admission comes after she delivered a powerful impact statement during Thynne's hearing on Thursday. 'I question my safety in everyday situations. This experience has left lasting marks on my life,' she began. '(Before the assaults) I was a happy, confident and expressive person through my personality, social media and network interactions with other people.' The court heard she was now so fearful that she packed up and moved interstate twice. 'Since experiencing the abuse and assaults from him, I have changed. 'I had to relocate homes two times in two different states to attempt to feel safe, but no matter where I went, it was flooded with anxiety and fear that I would be confronted by him.' Thynne showed little emotion while sitting in the dock, occasionally rocking back and forth with his head to the ground. 'Law legislation needs some work… this is not acceptable and best believe it will not be the last time you hear from me about it,' she concluded. In recent months, Thynne's crimes have caused grief for his high-profile half-sibling Tammy Hembrow, 31, who faced fierce public backlash last month after publicly denying rumours she was supporting him. In a TikTok clip that has since clocked more than two million views, Hembrow denied that she bailed out her younger brother, stating she's not involved in 'any of the legal situation'. 'I don't usually address things like this, but this is a very serious topic, and what's being said about me is just not true,' she said. 'Firstly, I have had no involvement whatsoever in ever bailing my little brother out of anything. 'I'm not involved in any of the legal situation. I've [had] no contact with my brother. I haven't seen my brother. I'm not involved at all, in any way. So I wanted to make that clear.' She then explained that she doesn't condone 'violence in any form' and reiterated that her 'heart goes out to everyone involved'.

Swimmers have stripped off and raced into chilly waters on the shortest day of the year. Wearing nothing but red swim caps, 3,000 courageous souls took the annual nude sunrise plunge into Hobart's River Derwent to mark the winter solstice. The air temperature was about 10C as the naked pack took to the water at 7.40am on Saturday, sparking shrieks and yells of anguish. Liz Cannard, who has been travelling around Tasmania for nearly four months with her husband, said she was petrified before taking the dip. 'I'm not a strong swimmer and I don't take my gear off for anybody ... so I've ticked off a couple of things today,' the Geelong resident said. Lizzy Nash from Sydney was also in the mood for a bit of carpe diem. 'It's about seizing the moment, seizing life and being inspired,' she said. 'This is the sort of thing that motivates you to want to do more and challenge yourself. It was awe-inspiring and I absolutely loved it.' The free swim is part of the Dark Mofo festival and started with just a few hundred participants in 2013. Melburnian Belinda Chambers said she had been watching people do it on television for years and decided to work remotely from Tasmania for the festival so she could stay and leave on a high. 'So exhilarating,' she said. 'I was nervous, but there was this almost primal moment of everyone being together that carries you along, and a sense of pure happiness.' The festival has made a name for itself by courting controversy and in 2018 drew the ire of some by installing inverted Christian crosses along Hobart's waterfront.
