Jon Rahm Ryder Cup Concern Addressed by Team Europe Captain
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources.
Like his American counterpart Keegan Bradley, Luke Donald could not avoid talking about the Ryder Cup during his pre-PGA Championship press conference. The European captain will play in the event after receiving one of 34 special invitations from the organizers.
Among the many topics related to the biennial event discussed by Donald was the case of Jon Rahm. The Spaniard's chances of making the team have been a hot topic since he signed with LIV Golf in December 2023.
When discussing the matter, Donald avoided giving any definitive answers:
"I haven't given anyone the nod," he said. "I think it's a little bit too early for that. Again, I have...we have very in-depth stats. We know exactly how these players are playing. We have a great idea of where they stack up against each other and against the U.S. But I certainly think it's a little too early to be giving anyone like firm assurances right now."
"In terms of Jon, he's one of the best players in the world, and I would expect him to be on that team, but I certainly haven't given him those assurances. He still needs to keep going and playing just like everyone else. Again, no assurances have been given right now."
The Englishman made it clear that aspirants will have to work hard to be worthy of the call, and that they still have many opportunities to do so:
"We have three majors, elevated events, plenty of other events, Rolex Series events to play. I want them to go out and feel like they go and earn it. Let's go in and play well. But again, we do have a lot of stats."

Luke Donald, Captain of Team Europe and Jon Rahm of Team Europe celebrate on the 18th green during the Friday afternoon fourball matches of the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf Club on September 29, 2023 in Rome, Italy. MoreDonald also reflected on the importance of major championships in assessing player form:
"I think majors are important for everyone," he said. "But it's important for me, the majors, because personally I don't see the Jons, the Tyrrells, Sergios, etcetera, as much these days. In terms of just talking with them and seeing them face to face, that's important for me."
The European team for the Ryder Cup will be selected using a points system to rank the players. The top 6 players will qualify directly for the team, while the other 6 will be selected by the captain with the help of his vice-captains.
Importantly, the European Ryder Cup team members must also be members of the DP World Tour. Rahm was in danger of losing his card, but managed to play the minimum number of events required in 2024 to remain eligible for the biennial event.
However, the Spaniard is still far from the top of the rankings (currently ranked 29th). The list is led by Rory McIlroy, with Tyrrell Hatton the only LIV player currently in the top 6 (4th).

Miguel Angel Jimenez outlasts Steven Alker to win 2025 Kaulig Companies Championship
Miguel Angel Jimenez and Steve Alker put on a show Sunday at the 2025 Kaulig Companies Championship worthy of a major tournament. It took two extra holes at Firestone Country Club, but Jimenez scored a come-from-behind victory for his fourth win on the PGA Tour Champions this season and third major championship. "It's very special," Jiménez said. "I've been playing very well. This week, I win here and put my name on the side of all great names through the history of the golf tournament here on this beautiful golf course." After starting together at 8 under, Jiménez and Alker each finished 10 under in stroke play, as each man shot a 2-under round of 68. Alker looked to be in control after he sunk a birdie on the 16th hole, only to see Jiménez erase a two-stroke lead with birdies on 17 and 18. "It was a nice finish, no?" Jimenez said. "I had to make birdie birdie to have a chance." Both men parred the first playoff hole, before the Spaniard sank a birdie on the second to win. It was Alker's ninth top-six finish in 10 starts this season. The New Zealand native is second behind Jimenez in the Charles Schwab Cup standings. With the win, Jimenez earned an exemption into the 2026 Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.

Keegan Bradley wins Travelers Championship with dramatic birdie on final hole
Keegan Bradley looks just about ready to captain the United States in this year's Ryder Cup after his clutch performance on Sunday to win the Travelers Championship by one stroke over Tommy Fleetwood and Russell Henley. Bradley had the crowd at TPC River Highlands in hysteria on the 18th hole, where he needed a birdie to win this final signature event of the PGA Tour campaign. It was rather surprising to see Bradley have this opportunity in the first place, as Fleetwood built a three-shot lead heading into Sunday, but he shot 2-over as his first PGA Tour win continued to allude him despite being a top 20 golfer in the world. Meanwhile, Bradley stepped up to the 18th tee box shooting 1-under, which was thanks to an absolute bomb of a putt from 64 feet that drained on the 15th green. That gave him a share for the lead at 14-under for the tournament. Bradley hit the perfect drive on 18, setting himself up with a 138-yard approach shot that he was hoping to stick close for a birdie chance for the win. That's exactly what happened, as he was eyeing his shot all the way to the green as it bounced and stuck less than six feet from the cup. Fleetwood, just bogeyed the par-3 16th to open the door for Bradley ended up three-putting for bogey, pushing an eight-footer on his second attempt to save par and force a playoff. Seeing Fleetwood miss that putt, Bradley stepped up to his ball for the win and sunk it, letting out a big cheer along with the many in the crowd. "Of all the shots and all the putts I've hit, I think I'll remember that one the most," Bradley said on the CBS broadcast. Fleetwood, on the other hand, was understandably "upset" after what transpired on the course, as he has the most top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour without a win than any golfer over the last 40 years. "I'm angry … it hurts," he said after the round. What made this such a significant battle between Bradley and Fleetwood was because of Ryder Cup being on the horizon. It will be held at Bethpage Black, and while Bradley is Team USA's captain, Fleetwood consistently plays on the European Ryder Cup squad. This was Bradley's eighth PGA Tour win, and if he wishes to be a playing captain in this year's Ryder Cup, he's certainly showing the clutch abilities to do so. He entered this week as the world No. 21 golfer in the Official World Golf Rankings. He will now be pushed into the top 12 in Ryder Cup standings as well with this victory at TPC River Highlands. While the top six in the standings after the BMW Championship earn an automatic bid onto the Ryder Cup team, Bradley does have the authority to choose himself as a captain's pick for the squad. If Bradley plays in the Ryder Cup, he would be the first playing captain since the legendary Arnold Palmer in 1963. The last captain to play for Team USA was Tiger Woods in 2019 for the Presidents Cup. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
