Sedibeng mayor and driver found unharmed after alleged hijacking, kidnapping

News2431-05-2025

Sedibeng mayor Lerato Maloka and her driver were found unharmed after they were allegedly hijacked and kidnapped in Alberton, on the East Rand, on Friday, police said.
Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said Maloka and her driver were allegedly kidnapped after leaving a house in Alberton.
'Preliminary reports suggest that the owner of the house reported the matter to an individual, who then informed the mayor's husband,' Muridili said.
Muridili said police were informed at around 02:00 on Saturday that Maloka and her driver were found unharmed and reunited with their families.
This is a developing story.

At least 10 hurt when yacht strikes dock in Hudson River, FDNY says

Several people were hurt when a yacht struck a dock in the Hudson River on Saturday, the New York City Fire Department says. It happened around 4:15 p.m. in the water near the Henry Hudson Parkway and West 125th Street. According to the FDNY, about 400 people were on board the vessel when it hit a dock. Marine units then escorted the yacht to a dock at West 125th Street, where passengers were unloaded. The FDNY says at least ten civilians suffered minor injuries and were taken to local hospitals to be treated. Police confirm there was a water rescue, but they did not provide further details. It is unknown at this time what caused the yacht to hit the dock. The investigation is ongoing. This crash comes one month after a Mexican navy training ship struck the Brooklyn Bridge, killing two sailors and injuring 19 others. That incident remains under investigation.

STAR-ADVERTISER Honolulu police have opened up an attempted murder investigation after a man driving a stolen Jeep Cherokee allegedly struck an officer early this morning in Kalihi. At 1 :05 a.m., officers saw the driver of a silver 2016 Jeep Cherokee, which had been linked to burglary investigations, make an 'illegal traffic maneuver ' to enter the Kamehameha Shopping Center, the Honolulu Police Department said in a social media post. When officers approached him on foot at the McDonald's drive-thru, police said, the driver reversed, then accelerated forward toward one of the officers, hitting him in the leg. The 28-year-old officer was not injured, HPD said. The suspect fled and has not yet been located, according to the post. Police found the stolen Jeep about an hour later, abandoned on North Nimitz Highway. 'Witnesses reported a male wearing black clothing and a ski mask exiting the vehicle and fleeing on foot, ' HPD said in the post. The suspect is wanted for alleged first-degree attempted murder.
