A senior developer at Pokémon GO has laid out the game's future - and it looks promising.
According to senior product director Michael Sterenka, who spoke to Newsweek during Pokémon GO Fest 2025 in Paris over the June 13th-15th weekend, players can expect the introduction of special night events, as well as more Pokémon specific to certain countries.
"I've always wanted to figure out what we can do for nighttime experience,' Sterenka said.

"There are definitely safety considerations in place for that. If you have your phone open and you're not really looking where you're going and it's dark outside, that could be a little bit tricky, but I've always felt like that was an area worth exploring for us and something I'd love to figure out in the future."
Don't expect nighttime events anytime soon, though. Like anything implemented in Pokémon GO, developer Niantic wants to make sure everything is well and truly battle-tested before it's introduced to the smash hit mobile game, which has been running since 2016.
"We don't have anything planned currently on that front, but if I could pick one thing to add to the event experience, that would be the thing that I would do."
The second item on Sterenka's wishlist is even more ambitious: regional diversity that brings different experiences based on where you are in the world. For instance, if you play Pokémon GO in France, you'll be able to catch a greater range of different Pokémon than a player in, say, Brazil.
This functionality is, to a lesser extent, already in the game. One Pokémon, Stonjourner, is a timed UK-exclusive. Comfey, meanwhile, currently only appears in Hawaii. But Sterenka is dreaming bigger than just Pokémon.
"Pokémon GO being such a location-based game, we always want to build experiences that are authentic to the places that people play in. So we do that right now for broader campaigns or maybe country specific activations...I would love for something that actually has regional differences, and based on where you're playing, similar to how we lean into all the amazing features here at Parc de Sceaux."

Parc de Sceaux hosted Pokémon GO Fest 2025, and offered a preview of what might be coming down the line. The premier event in the Pokémon GO calendar offered numerous incentives for the thousands of players in attendance, including new missions, rare items, and previously hard-to-obtain Pokémon.
There were also distinct habitats for players to explore. Each habitat housed its own set of field research tasks themed around the habitat they're linked to. The Moonless Volcano area, for example, featured fierce and fiery Pokémon like Numel and Houndoom, while the Hypnotic Tundra boasted Piplups and Spheals.
On top of this, there were nine free daily raid passes, an increase from three hours to eight hours of party play, and surprise Pokémon that popped out while taking snapshots. It all seemed designed for one purpose: to get players out of the house and interacting with each other in the real world.

For Sterenka, that's exactly what makes the game so popular. "Pokemon GO is the most family friendly, accessible game in the world. And when you look around here, it's proof of that. You see people who you would probably never see together otherwise, all coming together to play this wonderful game that everybody loves."
"We really try to encourage people to meet up in person and have these real-world social experiences. So it's really not like any other game out there, and in fact, a lot of people who play Pokémon GO don't consider themselves gamers, and this is more of sort of a lifestyle app that leverages the fun of catching Pokémon to really get people outside and enjoying the world around them."

Other additions include a Hotspot Manager, a toggle for face unlock vibration, and the June security patch. This may be one of the device's final feature updates, with no more OS upgrades coming. The Nothing Phone 1 might be nearing the end of its update life, but it's not quite done yet. A new software update is rolling out that brings one of Android 15's key features, with a specific tailoring to Nothing's UI. According to a post on the official Nothing Community forum, the update introduces Privacy space: a new secure area on your phone for sensitive apps and data. You can access it by swiping right in the app drawer, and it works much like the feature seen on other Android phones, requiring separate authentication and keeping apps isolated from the rest of the system. You can also set a different privacy password for both the new Privacy space and the existing App Locker. The update also brings a revamped Hotspot Manager for controlling connected devices, fixes an issue with the Glyph Composer lighting effect, and lets users disable face unlock vibrations via a new toggle. As expected, the June 2025 Android security patch is included, as well as other big fixes. This could be one of the last feature-rich updates for the Nothing Phone 1. Nothing previously confirmed to Android Authority that the device won't get Android 16, as it has already received its three promised OS upgrades. Security patches will continue for a bit longer, but new feature rollouts will likely start tapering off without the latest OS support. Initial user reactions to the Nothing post in the comments are mixed. It turns out the most terrifying thing about 28 Years Later isn't the flesh-eating infected, it's the emotions. In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, star Aaron Taylor-Johnson described the upcoming sequel not as a straight-up horror movie, but as something more intimate and disturbing… a family drama set against the backdrop of a collapsed world. Taylor-Johnson said: 'We played the reality of the family drama, didn't we? We just kind of leant into what our family was sort of feeling and going through in this post-apocalyptic world. 'So the story itself feels very intimate within this big landscape. So you don't really play into the sort of horror theme in a way? You're just playing the reality of the circumstances, and I think that, in itself, is more horrific.' Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, both returning from the original 28 Days Later , this third installment trades the genre tropes for something a little more grounded. Of course, there are going be jumpscares. Yes, the Infected are back. But the emotional core revolves around Jamie (Taylor-Johnson), his wife Isla (Jodie Comer), and their son Spike (Williams), as they venture from the relative safety of Holy Island into the decaying chaos of the mainland. What begins as a coming-of-age journey for Spike quickly turns into something far more dangerous. According to Williams, it's that character shift that gives the movie its emotional bite. 'We really see Spike mature throughout this film, and he has to mature to survive. We see him right at the start where, you know, he holds back a lot and he's still got that childlike curiosity. 'Then we start to see… well, he still keeps that but he pushes it back to defend his mother, who's he trying to protect.' Taylor-Johnson and Williams both avoided watching other zombie films while shooting because 28 Years Later doesn't follow the usual playbook. When asked if he looked to the genre for inspiration: Taylor-Johnson said: 'I didn't because I didn't feel like it correlated or related to this.' Williams added: 'It's just so unique and creative. I just watched 28 Days Later a lot to try and get the vibe of this one.' With Jack O'Connell and Ralph Fiennes also on board, and Boyle and Garland fully back in the creative driver's seat, 28 Years Later is shaping up to be more than just a revival, it might be the most emotionally intense chapter yet. 28 Years Later hits theaters June 20th.
