Digital technology most influential, powerful tool to address societal challenges: Talaat

Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has delivered a recorded speech at the National Conference of the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects (Round Three) stressing that digital technology is one of the most powerful tools for addressing societal challenges, particularly climate change.
The event – hosted by the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation – was attended by the prime minister, several ministers, governors, parliament members and representatives from UN organizations, international institutions, private companies, civil society organizations and development partners.
In his speech, the minister of communication said, as part of the Digital Egypt vision, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) is committed to promoting sustainable digital technologies and driving digital transformation through close cooperation with various state sectors, enabling the delivery of digital government services to citizens, thus the MCIT is leveraging AI technologies in different fields, according to a statement by the MCIT Monday.
He also highlighted efforts and investments in expanding access to high-speed internet nationwide, which has contributed to the country ranking first in Africa in average fixed Internet speed.
The minister reaffirmed the MCIT's commitment to developing skilled professionals in ICT sciences and fostering technological innovation and entrepreneurship. He noted that 23 Creativa Innovation Hubs have been established across various governorates to support young innovators.
Talaat further said the MCIT's participation in the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects reflects its dedication to building a knowledge-based economy and encouraging innovation in climate action by creating smart technological solutions to address climate challenges. Over the past two editions of the initiative, the MCIT worked to increase awareness and reach promising project owners across the country.
The ministry also developed and designed the digital training pillar, which raises awareness of emerging technologies, their applications at national and international levels and the technological criteria essential for smart green projects.
For the third round, Talaat highlighted the MCIT's active role in promoting the initiative through social media, MCIT's official website, and its affiliated platforms. The ministry also collaborated with mobile network operators to send half a million SMS messages nationwide to publicize the initiative. Additionally, the MCIT trained contestants on integrating technology into their projects to ensure sustainable and effective digital solutions and participated in the evaluation process at all stages of the initiative.
Looking ahead, Talaat expressed his eagerness to strengthen collaboration with partners in preparation for the fourth round of the initiative. Efforts will focus on enhancing support mechanisms for contestants, increasing awareness and maximizing the impact of innovative project ideas.
The MCIT will continue working with relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Local Development and the National Council for Women to refine evaluation criteria with a greater focus on the smart component of projects. This will help expand participation and enhance the quality of submitted innovations.
The ICT minister reaffirmed the MCIT's commitment to advancing green technology transformation and supporting sustainable digital development.

This initiative aims to support the use of AI in advancing development efforts across the African continent. Urso expressed keenness to strengthen bilateral cooperation in AI, as well as to collaborate on a regional level to implement and achieve the goals of this initiative. He also thanked the Egyptian Ministry of Communications for nominating a representative to serve on the center's executive committee. This meeting is part of Talaat's visit to Italy, in response to an invitation from Urso. During the visit, several meetings were held with officials from Italian companies and institutions to boost cooperation and attract more investment into Egypt's communications and IT sector.

'This report is being released at a time of rising uncertainty, even more than when it was drafted,' Al-Mashat said during her speech at the launch of the UNCTAD World Investment Report 2025 in Cairo. Referring to Egypt's recent hosting of the Development Finance to Foster Private Sector-Led Growth & Jobs conference, Al-Mashat said the country serves as an example of how multilateral development partners can work together to support investment and development agendas. She also touched on broader issues raised in the report, including developments in East Asia's green transition and the importance of international experience-sharing through South–South and triangular cooperation. She emphasized the importance of including all countries in global transformations, especially in areas such as digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence. US firm VXI to create 4,000 jobs in Egypt in $135m expansion

American outsourcing firm VXI plans to create 4,000 new jobs in Egypt as part of a $135m expansion that aims to increase its local workforce to 5,000 specialists by the end of 2028, the company has announced. The expansion plans were detailed during a visit by Egypt's Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amr Talaat, to VXI's Cairo headquarters. He was accompanied by company executives including Global Chief Operating Officer Ryan Collins and Global Chief People Officer Erika King. Talaat said the visit was part of the ministry's focus on supporting international outsourcing companies operating in Egypt. He stated that encouraging investment in the sector was a key pillar of the government's strategy to boost digital exports and solidify the country's status as a global hub for these services. 'We are encouraging investment in the outsourcing sector as one of the main pillars for strengthening Egypt's position as a preferred destination for international companies in this field,' Talaat said. He noted that Egypt is seeing continuous expansion in the number of outsourcing centres due to efforts in digital skills development and providing incentives. 'We are continuing to cooperate with companies in the outsourcing field to expand the base of human cadres trained in the matrix of skills these companies require.' He added that investments like those from VXI support the state's goals of increasing digital service exports and raising the digital economy's contribution to the gross domestic product by creating thousands of specialised jobs and transferring global operational expertise to the local market. During his tour of the facility, Talaat spoke with several young employees about their professional experiences and the skills they had acquired. He affirmed the state's commitment to enabling young people with digital skills for careers in the outsourcing sector, which he described as one of the most promising fields for professional growth. VXI was established in Egypt in December 2023 and became fully operational in March 2024. From its Cairo office, it provides services in six languages to clients in Germany, Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands, and the United States. Ahmed Bahgat, VXI's Vice President of Operations for Egypt, Africa, and the Middle East, said: 'VXI Egypt appreciates the Egyptian government's support and its interest in the outsourcing industry, which has contributed to placing Egypt among the top three most attractive countries for foreign investment in this field.'
