Jail, caning for Singapore man who had over 300 videos, photos of child pornography

SINGAPORE: A man who was found with 178 videos and 153 still images of child pornography in his possession was sentenced to a year and nine months' jail, and two strokes of the cane on Thursday (June 19).
Gan Qi Xuan, 26, had earlier downloaded such content from the Dark Web before categorising his collection on his personal electronic devices and online platforms.
Court documents did not disclose how his offence came to light, but he was nabbed in a raid at his home in August 2023.
On Aug 19, 2024, he pleaded guilty to one count of being in possession of child pornography.
In earlier proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor Koh Yi Wen told the court that Gan got to know about the Dark Web around 2015 and found a forum on child pornography on it.
Initially, he did not download anything during his first visit as he was wary of viruses. But curiosity got the better of him about three months later, and he downloaded such videos and images from the Dark Web, including child abuse material.
Soon after, Gan began to access the Dark Web regularly to download pornographic material, including those involving children.
He would view the videos and images he downloaded before sorting them into different folders on his laptop.
When the device ran out of storage space, he transferred all the material to his Google Drive account.
His laptop broke down in mid-2021, and he replaced it with a central processing unit later that year.
During this time, Gan also created a cloud storage account to store his pornographic material as the platform provided more free storage space than Google Drive.
Without revealing details, defence lawyer Teo Choo Kee told the court on June 19 that Gan has lost his place in a university.
Teo also said his client has stopped viewing such child abuse material by 2021 but still had files containing them in his possession when he was caught.
Gan is also extremely remorseful for what he had done, the court heard. - The Straits Times/ANN

SINGAPORE: Some 82 people were arrested after drugs worth over S$132,000 were seized in a five-day, island-wide operation. In a statement on Saturday (June 21), the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) said that the anti-drug blitz took place from June 16 to 20, and covered areas like Ang Mo Kio, Bukit Merah, Changi, Punggol and Woodlands. A total of about 1,307g of cannabis, 739g of heroin, 196g of 'Ice' (methamphetamine), 52 cannabis seeds, two Ecstasy tablets, 2g of cannabis resin and 1g of cannabis-infused tablet were seized. The seized drugs were estimated to be able to feed the addiction of 640 abusers for a week, they added. Police officers were alerted to a call for assistance on June 14 at a residential unit in Punggol Central. They arrested a 35-year-old Singaporean man after searching the unit and finding substances believed to be controlled drugs and drug paraphernalia. CNB officers were alerted and took over the investigation of the drug offences. In another incident on June 16, CNB officers launched a drug bust in Yishun Avenue 6 after some follow-up investigations. A 34-year-old Singaporean man was arrested after a search of a residential unit saw a total of about 29g of cannabis and drug paraphernalia. Another follow-up operation later in the evening saw the arrest of two male foreign nationals at Moonstone Lane in Bendemeer - a 31-year-old for suspected drug trafficking offences and a 37-year-old for alleged drug consumption. A search of the 31-year-old's e-bike and his hideout in Bendemeer found a total of about 1,095g of cannabis, 19g of 'Ice', drug paraphernalia and cash amounting to $3,944. On June 18, officers arrested a 59-year-old Singaporean man for alleged drug trafficking in Bukit Merah, which was soon followed by an arrest of another 69-year old Singaporean man in the same vicinity for drug-related offences. A total of about 209g of heroin and 17g 'Ice' were seized from the former's place. Another 62-year-old Singaporean man was nabbed in Yishun Avenue 4 for suspected drug trafficking. CNB officers had to force their way into his residential unit after the man refused to open the door. A search of the unit recovered about 247g of heroin and small amount of 'Ice'. Investigations into all arrested suspects are ongoing. Anyone found guilty of trafficking more than 15g of diamorphine, or 'pure heroin', or 250g of methamphetamine or more than 500g of cannabis may face the mandatory death penalty. According to CNB's annual statistics report on Feb 12, in 2024, there were 126 new drug abusers under the age of 20 arrested, with the youngest aged 13. This was 30 per cent more than the 97 nabbed in 2023. New abusers totalled 966 in 2024, an increase from the 952 arrested in 2023. YANGON: A Thai monk who repeatedly provided shelter to illegal Burmese workers has been arrested in plainclothes, according to Thai media reports. A monk who allowed illegal Burmese workers to hide more than 20 times at a monastery in Toray, on the border of Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand, was arrested in disguise on Friday (June 19). It was reported that a special operations team was ordered to arrest illegal workers after it was discovered that they were using religious sites as shelters. The monk reportedly admitted that he had granted asylum to migrant workers more than 20 times. Despite suspecting that the accounts would likely be used for illicit activities from the onset, Nguyen Lan Dung, 24, agreed to the arrangement. On Thursday (June 19), the Vietnamese national was sentenced to 10 months' jail after pleading guilty to three charges under the Computer Misuse Act, and one under the Corruption, Drug Trafficking and Other Serious Crimes (Confiscation of Benefits) Act. Eleven charges of a similar nature were taken into consideration during the sentencing. Dung was also fined S$1,700. Investigations revealed that after Dung agreed to the arrangement, she reached out to a man to say she knew people who would pay him for control of his bank account. Court documents do not reveal how investigations into Dung and her sister started. Sometime in March 2024, the man agreed and gave up his bank details and the corresponding physical ATM card. Dung handed over the card and login details to her sister and her sister's boyfriend, and was paid $700. Court documents stated that the man's bank account and ATM card were later found to be linked to extortion scams, and were used to transact a flow of scam proceeds. Under the arrangement, Dung would also act as the point of contact for other Vietnamese nationals who were willing to sell their bank accounts. She would earn between $500 and $700 for each bank account she helped to procure. Sometime in March 2024, she managed to obtain two different bank accounts from two Vietnamese nationals. Court documents do not reveal how Dung had managed to contact the two. Around the same period, Dung, along with her sister and her sister's boyfriend, arranged to sell 11 bank accounts to unknown persons.
