Chandigarh admn all set to raze Adarsh Colony on June 19

Hindustan Times4 days ago

Moving ahead with its slum-free campaign, the UT Estate Office is prepared to demolish Adarsh Colony in Sector 54 — one of the only two remaining slums in Chandigarh — on June 19.
The colony, which came up nearly two decades ago on approximately six acres of government land, currently houses around 800 shanties behind the Furniture Market. The estimated value of the encroached land is ₹250 crore.
Following this demolition, only one slum — Shahpur Colony in Sector 38 — will remain. This illegal settlement has about 300 shanties spread across four acres of government land, valued at ₹150 crore.
Chandigarh deputy commissioner Nishant Yadav confirmed the action, stating, 'Adarsh Colony will be demolished on June 19, and notices have already been issued to the residents.'
Regarding Shahpur Colony, he explained, 'The extent of government land encroached upon is comparatively smaller, with most of the dwellings built on private agricultural land. However, we plan to take legal opinion and proceed with demolition within a month.'
When asked about steps to prevent future encroachments, Yadav said, 'Instructions have been issued to the estate team to regularly monitor vacant government land. If any encroachment is found, it must be cleared immediately.'
Earlier, on May 6, the UT Estate Office had demolished Janta Colony in Sector 25, reclaiming around 10 acres of government land worth ₹350 crore. The reclaimed site has been earmarked for a dispensary, primary school, community centre and shopping area.
Prior to that, on April 24, over 1,000 makeshift structures were razed in Sanjay Colony in Industrial Area, Phase 1. The colony had been encroaching on nearly six acres of prime government land.
The UT administration has been working to make Chandigarh slum-free since the early 2000s. In 2006, it launched a rehabilitation initiative under the Chandigarh Small Flats Scheme, earmarking 356 acres for the construction of 25,728 flats intended to house 23,841 families from 18 unauthorised colonies.
The identified families, comprising over 1 lakh residents, are required to pay a nominal monthly rent after relocation. However, delays and non-payment have resulted in significant outstanding dues.
Over the years, the administration has carried out multiple demolition drives. In 2013, it razed Colony Number 5, followed by Colony Number 4 in 2022. Together, these two slums had occupied over 165 acres of government land. Other demolished slums include Mazdoor Colony, Kuldeep Colony, Pandit Colony, Nehru Colony, Ambedkar Colony, Kajheri Colony, and Madrasi Colony.

MakeMyTrip raises $3.1 bn in APAC's biggest equity-bond deal since 2022

MakeMyTrip raises $3.1 billion via equity and convertible notes to reduce stake below 20 per cent, marking APAC's largest concurrent offering since 2022 MakeMyTrip has raised $3.1 billion through equity and bond offerings, marking the Asia-Pacific region's largest concurrent offering of equity follow-on and convertible notes since 2022, Kamal Yadav, head of investment banking at Morgan Stanley, said in a LinkedIn post on Friday. 'On June 17, 2025, after the close, MakeMyTrip priced a $3.1 billion concurrent registered primary equity follow-on and 144A convertible bond (post-shoe). The primary equity follow-on offering of 18,400,000 ordinary equity shares was priced at $90 per share. The five-year convertible senior notes offering, at 0 per cent coupon and 35.0 per cent conversion premium, together represent APAC's largest concurrent offering of equity follow-on and convertible notes since 2022,' Yadav wrote. The last major fundraise by an Indian internet company was Paytm's $2.5 billion initial public offering in 2021. Proceeds from the fundraise will be used to buy back stake held by Group Ltd, reducing the Chinese company's holding to under 20 per cent from the current 45.34 per cent. will continue to remain the largest minority shareholder in the company. The move comes amid allegations by founder Nishant Pitti that five out of 10 directors on the company's board had ties with China—claims that the Nasdaq-listed company dismissed as 'malicious and motivated'. MakeMyTrip did not respond to queries from Business Standard as of Friday evening. The company is yet to issue an official statement on the closure of the deal. MakeMyTrip had initially planned to offer 14 million new shares to raise $1.4 billion and zero-coupon convertible bonds worth $1.25 billion. It later increased the new share offering to 18.4 million shares, priced at $90—slightly lower than the $91.49 closing price on June 17.

Congress floated test balloon with job fair on Rahul's 55th birthday. And thousands turned up

At least 100 companies, including well-known names like Amazon, Tata, Zepto and Blinkit, participated in the job fair with the aim of recruiting candidates from various educational backgrounds, from 12th pass students to PhD-holders, he said. The event saw an overwhelming response, with more than 20,000 people of different age groups registering to participate, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Yadav told a press conference here. New Delhi: The Congress' youth wing and the Delhi unit organised a job fair at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium here Thursday to mark their leader Rahul Gandhi's 55th birthday, and to underline the issue of unemployment in the country. More companies wanted to participate but they could not due to space constraints, he said. 'Those who couldn't be accommodated today will be engaged in future events.' He described the job fair as a significant step by the Congress in response to the 'failure' of both the Centre and the Delhi government to provide employment opportunities. 'There was a time when youths used to come to Delhi for jobs. Now, Delhi's youths are facing the worst unemployment crisis in 45 years,' Yadav said. The job fair organised by the DPCC and the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) appeared to be a political intervention by Gandhi who has over the years repeatedly highlighted the issue of job scarcity across the country. With the Congress looking to regain organisational strength in the capital, the employment fair served both as outreach and mobilisation. Aspirants reached the venue as early as 8 am to be among the first ones to be sitting for the interviews with big companies. As the day progressed, the venue got overcrowded with candidates waiting in long queues to get their token numbers to be called in. Mania Tandon, a final-year BSc student from Delhi University's Janki Devi Memorial College, said she came with high hopes after seeing the names of the companies. 'I turned up around 11 am and my token number is 5,395. Right now, only people till token number 1,000 have been called. I'm truly disappointed because it's overcrowded, and it doesn't seem I'll get a job here,' she told ThePrint. Tandon, however, appreciated the Congress' attempt and said there is a need for similar effort on a bigger scale. 'Given the population and the desperation for jobs, this was bound to happen. It feels weird seeing so many people in the same boat.' Mohammad Sohrab, who is from north Delhi's Narela and has completed 12th grade, said, 'My token number is 2,483. The announcements are only up to 1,000. The arrangements are not great, but we will still wait. This is the first time any party has done something like this. Other parties are busy with Hindu-Muslim debates. I want a regular salary, and a stable job. That's it.' Lauding Gandhi's effort, Sohrab said he wants to witness the day when Gandhi becomes the prime minister. Manoj Kumar, a grassroots Congress worker, told ThePrint around 100 youths had come through his mobilisation efforts. 'There is so much unemployment. This fair, on Rahul Gandhi's birthday, gives people a real chance. Some are getting interviewed and even hired right here.' Meanwhile, Tandon said, 'Everyone here is just trying their luck. And honestly, when I see this crowd, it makes me realise how hard things really are.' (Edited by Ajeet Tiwari) Also Read: Don't jump at 1st unemployment number you see. Chandigarh tops India in school education report

Chandigarh: Chandigarh has secured the top position in the Government of India's Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2.0, an annual assessment of school education systems across states and union territories, for two consecutive years — 2022-23 and 2023-24 — emerging as the only state or UT to reach the Prachesta-1 grade in either year. No other region crossed into even the next higher grade band, making Chandigarh's lead both significant and solitary. Its overall score improved from 688 in 2022–23 to 703 in 2023–24, driven by gains in infrastructure, access, and governance. However, the data also reveals specific areas where Chandigarh did not lead the country, particularly in governance processes, teacher education, and learning outcomes—domains where other states and UTs outperformed it. In governance processes, it scored 76.7 out of 130, remaining in the Prachesta-1 band. In comparison, Gujarat scored 87.8, while Odisha and Haryana also performed better in this domain. These governance indicators include digital fund transfers, student and teacher attendance systems, and timely data reporting—areas where Chandigarh still has room to strengthen implementation. Similarly, in the teacher education and training domain, Chandigarh scored 85.7 out of 100, placing it in the Utkarsh category. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Godrej Majesty | Luxurious 3 & 4 BHK Homes at ₹2.39 Cr* Godrej Majesty Learn More Undo However, Kerala, with a score of 91.4, became the only state or UT to achieve the topmost Daksh grade in this domain. This suggests scope for further enhancement in teacher qualification standards and in-service training in Chandigarh. Even in access, where Chandigarh had previously achieved the Daksh grade (2022–23), its score marginally declined from 72.9 to 72.4 in 2023–24, falling into the Utkarsh range. By contrast, Puducherry retained the Daksh grade in access this year. Nonetheless, Chandigarh's overall leadership reflects robust progress across most domains. It scored 148.0 out of 190 in Infrastructure & Facilities and 216.5 out of 260 in Equity, placing it in the Atti-Uttam and Utkarsh grades respectively. This success builds on several initiatives: 100% retention at all levels, 450 co-located Anganwadi centres, expanded vocational training, kitchen gardens in all government schools, and the installation of sanitary pad vending machines in previously uncovered institutions. The UT also leads in digital readiness, having implemented digital attendance in all government schools and seeded over 98% of student records with Aadhaar in the UDISE+ system. Social audits were introduced under the PM POSHAN scheme in 2023–24, and all children with special needs (CWSN) were provided with assistive devices. Importantly, Chandigarh maintained a consistent score of 103.6 in Learning Outcomes for three consecutive years, though no state or UT showed improvement here due to the reliance on NAS 2021 data. While the PGI 2.0 results are not directly comparable to earlier PGI formats, Chandigarh has ranked first nationally for three years in a row under the updated methodology. The next round may bring further movement, as results from the 2024 PARAKH national assessment—expected in July 2025—will inform updates in the Learning Outcomes and Equity domains. PGI 2.0 continues to serve as a powerful tool for states and UTs to monitor school education quality, push reforms, and work toward the goals set by the National Education Policy 2020 and Sustainable Development Goal 4. No domain-level top grade: Chandigarh did not achieve Daksh (top grade) in any individual domain, while Kerala and Delhi each did so in one.
