Sober clubbing brews fresh beat for Singapore Gen Z
This is no underground rave, nor a brunch gone wild. 21 Jun 2025 01:00pm This photo taken on May 24, 2025 shows people mingling over coffee drinks at an alcohol-free clubbing event in Singapore. This is no underground rave, nor a brunch gone wild. It's a caffeine-powered daytime clubbing sesh -- part of a growing wave of alcohol-free, Gen Z-driven events gaining traction in Singapore and elsewhere in the world. This photo taken on May 24, 2025 shows people mingling over coffee drinks at an alcohol-free clubbing event in Singapore. Swaying to dance music and TikTok-fuelled pop under a disco ball, young punters are packed shoulder to shoulder while sipping on coffee, their energy powered by pour-overs rather than pints. (Photo by Roslan RAHMAN / AFP) At a recent event in Singapore's trendy Duxton district, the space was jammed by 4pm, with baristas churning out fancy coffees and DJs spinning back-to-back sets. The crowd grooved with energy, even without the usual liquid courage. "A lot of people think alcohol gives you the high, but caffeine sometimes can do that too," said Aden Low, 21, co-founder of Beans and Beats which organises coffee raves at different venues. "That's why the atmosphere at our events tends to be quite energetic." The parties blend curated music with specialty coffee served in white paper cups. The vibe is light, friendly and very Gen Z. "It's also the idea that this is a safe space," said Esther Low, 31, who was at the event in Duxton. "When you go to a club setting, there's usually this underlying intention to hook up. So, for me, that's personally why I would prefer this." Several reports say Gen Z is chugging fewer pints than previous generations, with the sober curious movement gaining popularity on social media. Sober curious people cut back on drinking or abstain altogether, often citing health reasons and better mental acuity. "Changes in alcohol use have been observed in population surveys and cohort studies. Generally, alcohol use among young adults has decreased," the World Health Organization said in a 2024 report. Club culture update From London to Los Angeles and Melbourne, similar coffee raves have swept up the social scene, appealing to young partygoers who also want to avoid hangovers. Ashley Chean, a Singaporean student who has been alcohol-free for a year, said she appreciates these sober gatherings. "When I lived in Paris, I realised I had a lot of alcoholic tendencies and I didn't want that to be my lifestyle," the 20-year-old told AFP. "More and more of my friends are sober or sober curious." The coffee clubbing events are usually held in cafes and other spaces such as rooftop bars -- as long as there's room for DJs and baristas to do their thing while people dance. The parties typically end by late afternoon, just in time for golden hour selfies. Besides the health benefits of avoiding alcohol, the events appeal to cost-conscious youth in Singapore, one of the most expensive cities in the world. The excess drinking and hard-partying ways of Gen X -- fuelled by anthems like the Beastie Boys' "Fight for Your Right (to Party)" and hip-hop videos glamorising club culture -- are fading for members of Gen Z. While organisers don't see Singapore's glitzy nightlife and clubbing being replaced, they hope their combination of beats and brews will keep the dance floor buzzing. "As long as we bring the vibes, we'll be OK," said Ashley. - AFP More Like This

SG radio DJ Glenn Ong says he was 'unhappily married' in IG post on weight loss
Radio DJ Glenn Ong said he was in an unhappy marriage in a June 18 Instagram post celebrating his weight loss. Photo: Glenn Ong/Instagram Singaporean radio DJ Glenn Ong admitted he was 'unhappily married' in an Instagram post made on June 18 to celebrate his weight-loss journey. In it, he wrote that he will turn 55 on June 22, and that it has been two years since he started training two to three times a week to lose weight. 'From an unhealthy 84kg when I was unhappily married to a crazy happy 73kg now. Always choose happy if you can,' wrote the host of The Big Show With Glenn And Angel on SPH Radio's Kiss92, alluding to his eight-year marriage to fellow local radio DJ Jean Danker, 46, a host and presenter on Mediacorp's Class 95. The former couple, who did not have any children together, announced their split in December 2024. It was Ong's third marriage, following his first two with the late Kate Reyes and Jamie Yeo, both former radio DJs. Ong's post, in which he encouraged his 77,600 Instagram followers to exercise and lose weight, included two photos – a selfie and a shot of him exercising at a gym. 'Can't seem to hit my target of 70kg, but I'll settle for 72 to 73 because I feel really awesome now. The last time I was in this shape was when I was 21. If I can do it, guys and gals, so can you. Ready to take on the world,' he wrote. About a week earlier, Danker mused about her post-divorce dating life in a series of Instagram Stories on June 10, where she answered anonymous Ask Me Anything questions posed by some of her 77,700 followers. She revealed that she has been asked out by guys she labels as 'the brave young 20somethings'. Asked if she was ready to get attached, she replied: 'Let's just say it's gonna take someone really special for me to give up sleeping diagonal on my massive king-size bed – and it hasn't happened yet.' She also advised that women should not beat themselves up for having 'any kind of feelings' towards divorce, 'whether it's embarrassment or otherwise'. 'It's scariest just before you do it and even if you leap crying, and fly through the air screaming in fear, you're gonna land on solid ground, I promise you. Be brave.' Danker later told news outlet CNA that she feels 'a real sense of uplevelling at the moment'. 'I'm honestly grateful every day and am just looking to work hard professionally... taking good care of myself in all aspects and enjoying my friendships.' She added: 'It's a bonus (and a miracle) if I find someone who is aligned with me in many ways, so that's not a huge priority. I really don't want to go on dating apps, so whatever will be will be. Open to casual coffee dates.' – The Straits Times/Asia News Network

Sarawak developing statewide sustainability roadmaps, to implement UN's Sustainable Development Goals
KUCHING: Sarawak is developing sustainability roadmaps for all 27 local authorities across the state to implement the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) at the local level. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said local authorities were developing the roadmaps with Urbanice Malaysia, an agency under the federal Housing and Local Government Ministry. "We want to see sustainability roadmaps for city, municipal and district council levels. "All this will be localised because we cannot expect to have the same SDG goals as London, Beijing or Washington. We are all different," he said on Friday (June 20). Dr Sim was speaking to reporters after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Urbanice and three local councils - Padawan Municipal Council, Kota Samarahan Municipal Council and Sarikei District Council - for the preparation of their SDG voluntary local review report. He said the sustainability roadmaps would help set the standard for local authorities to compare their progress with other cities. This, Dr Sim said, would help identify any gaps that need addressing or areas for improvement. He added that the voluntary local review by the three councils would allow them to look at their gaps in implementing the SDG. "The gaps can be due to local challenges in certain areas of Sarawak, such as places where we are still reaching out to supply electricity and clean water. "We're also looking at parameters such as the difference between urban and rural poverty," he said. Urbanice chief executive officer Norliza Hashim said Sarawak had achieved 58% progress in localising the SDG, above the national average of 43%. "This is the overall achievement of all the local authorities in Sarawak, based on data we got from the Statistics Department, the state government and the local authorities themselves," she said. Norliza also said Sarawak was the first state to evaluate the localisation of SDGs by all its local authorities simultaneously. "This is a good commitment. Then you can take action at the state level, not just at the local level, because you see the results as a whole," she said.
