SEBI bans Bollywood star Arshad Warsi, wife, 57 others from securities markets for up to 5 years

Gulf Today30-05-2025

Markets regulator the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on Thursday barred Bollywood actor Arshad Warsi, his wife Maria Goretti, and 57 others from the securities markets for periods ranging from 1-5 years.
The regulator imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh each on Warsi and his wife, Maria. The decision came in a case related to misleading videos on YouTube channels recommending investors to buy shares of Sadhana Broadcast.
SEBI found that Arshad Warsi had made a profit of Rs41.70 lakh and his wife earned a profit of Rs50.35 lakh.
"It is noted that Arshad Hussain Warsi in his statement recorded before SEBI on June 27, 2023, stated that apart from placing trades in his own account, he was also trading from the accounts of his wife (Noticee 61) and brother (Noticee 62). It is further noted from the submissions of Noticee 60 that Aahuti Mistry acted as the manager of Arshad Warsi,' according to the SEBI order.
SEBI also levied penalties in the range of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 5 crore on 57 other entities, including promoters of Sadhana Broadcast (now Crystal Business System Ltd). Apart from the debarment, SEBI also directed these entities to disgorge total unlawful gains of Rs 58.01 crore along with 12% interest per annum from the end of the investigation period till the date of actual payment.
The capital markets regulator said the masterminds behind this whole operation were Gaurav Gupta, Rakesh Kumar Gupta and Manish Mishra.
Subhash Aggarwal, who also happened to be a director of the RTA of Sadhana Broadcast Ltd, acted as the go-between Manish Mishra and the promoters, the order stated.
SEBI received complaints, alleging that there was price manipulation and subsequent offloading of shares in the scrip of SBL.
It was also stated in the complaints that YouTube videos were being uploaded with false content to lure investors and a paid marketing campaign worth crores was undertaken to make the videos reach a wider audience. The complainant also provided links to YouTube videos, names of YouTube channels and dates when the videos were uploaded.
SEBI examined the complaints and prima facie found that net sellers in the shares of SBL were connected to the creator of YouTube channels, wherein videos with false content and unrealistic target price for the scrip were uploaded with the intention to influence and induce public investors to invest in the scrip.
"Search and seizure operations were conducted at the premises of 15 Noticees wherein various documentary and electronic evidences were gathered and statements of various Noticees were recorded on oath," according to the markets regulator.

Google's AI Tools Boost UAE Economy by Dhs21.8bn

Arabian Post Staff -Dubai Google's array of AI‑powered services—Search, Ads, Play, Maps, YouTube and Gemini—delivered a Dhs21.8 billion uplift to the UAE's economy in 2024, fueling digital transformation, consumer value and job creation. Search and Ads alone generated Dhs20.2 billion by enabling thousands of local companies to reach new customers and expand operations. Gemini, Google's AI assistant, has seen 63 per cent of UAE adults using it, with nine in ten users reporting gains in productivity and 71 per cent praising its Arabic‑language ease of use. Other tools, including Maps, Waze and mobile wallets, further enhanced daily routines. ADVERTISEMENT The Google Maharat Min Google skilling initiative has equipped more than 430,000 people in the UAE with digital and AI competencies since 2018. Meanwhile, the Android and Google Play ecosystem supported around 30,000 jobs and generated approximately Dhs455 million in revenue for UAE‑based app developers in 2024. Survey data from March 2025, with responses from over 1,100 consumers and nearly 400 business leaders, indicates that Google's services offer an estimated average monthly benefit of Dhs683 per user. Half of adults describe Search as essential to their routine, 89 per cent rely on Maps or Waze for navigation, and 90 per cent use mobile payment platforms like GPay or GWallet to streamline transactions. Adoption of AI tools among UAE businesses is nearing ubiquity, with 91 per cent reporting use of at least one AI product in workflows, while 97 per cent of public‑sector respondents confirm boosted productivity from Google's AI solutions. Consumer engagement is likewise robust: 94 per cent use Search monthly to compare prices, 86 per cent check reviews before visiting venues, 80 per cent use mapping apps to locate businesses, and 73 per cent of 18–24‑year‑olds browse or shop via Search weekly. Google's platforms have also strengthened the creative and developer landscape: over 600 UAE‑based YouTube channels surpassed one million subscribers—a 15 per cent annual rise—and the Google News Initiative has trained more than 20,000 journalists and journalism students across the MENA region, including the UAE. Anthony Nakache, Google's Managing Director for the Middle East and North Africa, emphasised that the firm's 'investment in accelerating the country's ambitious journey towards a diversified, AI‑powered economy' is reflected in the findings. He highlighted how local partnerships, AI‑driven tools and continuous skilling programmes contribute to 'substantial economic value' and empower individuals, enterprises and communities within the UAE. Public First's Economic Impact Report, published mid‑June, is based on econometric modelling, consumer and business polling, case studies and secondary data. Survey responses were weighted to reflect the UAE's national demographics.

Aramex launches AI-powered campaign to combat scam messages

With phishing and impersonation scams on the rise, Aramex has launched an AI-generated awareness campaign to help customers distinguish legitimate brand communications from scam ones. Rolled out on the company's social media platforms, the campaign uses a deliberately surreal, AI-style video to spotlight the growing issue of scam messages targeting Aramex customers across key markets, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Jordan. The Aramex film starts with a conventional brand introduction before glitching into AI-generated visuals: delivery drones, people with box or animal heads, and surreal scenes that blur fiction and reality. The narrator shares a warning, 'Not everything you see in the digital world is real,' and then cautions viewers about scammers pretending to be Aramex, urging them to verify official communications and avoid acting on suspicious messages. The tone of the Aramex video – equal parts cautionary and absurd – intentionally mirrors the confusing nature of scam content online. The campaign draws from the insight that impersonation scams are not only growing in number but also evolving in sophistication. According to Help AG's 2024 State of the Market report, phishing and impersonation attempts accounted for 90 per cent of all cybersecurity incidents last year – pointing to a broader shift in how fraudsters exploit brand trust to deceive consumers. Mike Rich, Group CMO at Aramex, explained: 'With scams targeting our industry growing in volume and sophistication, traditional awareness methods simply weren't cutting through the noise. We adopted AI for the creatives in a classic case of fighting fire with fire. While the campaign protects Aramex customers, it's also a broader public service initiative relevant across all industries.' With scammers increasingly turning to AI tools to generate fake emails, cloned websites and deepfake content, Aramex chose to mirror this approach in a way that exposes its dangers. Shahir Sirry, Global Creative Director at Aramex, added: 'Scammers are using artificial tactics to deceive people, so we leaned into artificial visuals to highlight just how unnatural and misleading these tactics are. The irony is intentional – and hopefully impactful.' The initiative promotes three core safety measures: verifying senders through official Aramex channels, never paying through unofficial links, and maintaining vigilance across all platforms – including social media. Since its launch, the campaign has coincided with a 28% increase in downloads of the Aramex mobile app, which the company positions as the most secure platform for tracking deliveries and making payments. The video is being supported by a wider digital campaign rollout and is available to watch across Aramex's official YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram, X and Facebook channels.
