Custom officials at the Kempegowda International Airport have foiled an attempt to smuggle 54 green iguanas, one common spotted cuscus, and two greenfinch birds packed in the check-in luggage on a flight from Bangkok to Bengaluru.
The sleuths on Thursday arrested the accused passenger, identified as Ahmed Jasim, a native of Tamil Nadu, as soon as he landed and tried to get the bag cleared.
The seized wildlife have been quarantined and sent back to Thailand on Friday, the officials said. The accused was booked under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, they added. He has been remanded in judicial custody.
Ahmed had concealed the wildlife in carton boxes packed along with chocolates and biscuits, and other snacks, officials said.
The sleuths said that the accused is a mule and was directed to hand over the check-in luggage to people waiting outside after getting confirmation of the code word.

Woman threatens to ‘crash flight' over luggage dispute, detained at airport

A disruptive incident aboard an Air India Express flight at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) led to the detention of a 36-year-old passenger, Vyas Hiral Mohanbhai earlier this week, moments before the scheduled departure of flight IX2749 to Surat. The altercation, stemming from a disagreement over cabin baggage, escalated into a serious safety concern, prompting swift action by authorities. The disturbance began when Mohanbhai, a doctor from Shivanahalli near Yelahanka, placed her bag in the overhead bin of the aircraft's first row but took her assigned seat in row 20F. When instructed by the cabin crew to relocate her bag to a bin closer to her seat, she refused, insisting that the crew handle the task. Her defiance persisted despite repeated requests from both the crew and the pilot, leading to a heated exchange. The situation worsened as Mohanbhai shouted at other passengers who were attempting to de-escalate the conflict. The incident took a grave turn when she allegedly threatened to 'crash the flight,' alarming the crew and passengers. The pilot promptly notified security, and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel intervened, escorting Mohanbhai off the aircraft to ensure the safety of all on board. Mohanbhai now faces charges under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including criminal intimidation and public mischief, as well as provisions of the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against Safety of Civil Aviation Act for jeopardising flight safety. Authorities have launched a thorough investigation to examine the circumstances and motives behind her actions.

POCSO-accused tribal youth gets Madhya Pradesh HC reprieve

BHOPAL: The MP High Court has commuted the death penalty of a 20-year-old tribal man convicted of rape in Khandwa district, reducing his sentence to 25 years of imprisonment. In 2023, a trial court had found him guilty of raping and attempting to murder a 4-year-old girl. Hearing the petition challenging the April 2023 Khandwa district's Protection of Children from Sexual Offence (POCSO) Act court's order rendering the youth death sentence, a two-judge bench of Justices Vivek Agrawal and Devnarayan Mishra held that though raping a four-year-old innocent child and strangling her and throwing her in a deserted place is a cruel act, considering the family background of the youth, the death sentence is not appropriate. 'Hence, the sentence imposed upon the appellant for the offence punishable under Sections 363, 450, 307, 201 of the Indian Penal Code is affirmed, but his sentence for the offence punishable under Sections 6 of the POCSO Act is converted from capital punishment to the rigorous imprisonment of 25 years with the fine amount of Rs 10,000…' 'Sentence not apt' The court said though raping a girl is cruel, considering the family background of the youth, the death sentence is not appropriate. 25 year RI & Rs 10,000 fine His sentence has been converted from capital punishment to an RI of 25 years with a fine of Rs 10,000.
