Sarawak Skills cements collaborations with Halliburton Energy, SDEC

KUCHING (May 15): The Sarawak Skills Development Centre (Sarawak Skills) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Halliburton Energy Services (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.
The MoU marks a strategic collaboration to strengthen industry-relevant training and workforce development in Sarawak.
'This partnership aims to support the design and implementation of specialised training programmes, provide practical training and internship opportunities, promote knowledge-sharing initiatives, and encourage joint resource development,' the institution said in notes shared during its Sarawak Leadership Talk here today.
'The MoU reflects a shared commitment by Sarawak Skills and Halliburton to advancing technical skills and capabilities within the oil and gas sector in Malaysia.'
Sarawak Skills also signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation Berhad (SDEC) to collaborate on advancing Industry 4.0 (IR4.0) technology adoption and workforce skills development in the state.
'This partnership focuses on the retrofitting of advanced Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinery and the delivery of practical, hands-on training programs to equip local talent with relevant skills in smart manufacturing and digital technologies,' Sarawak Skills explained.
'The collaboration reflects both parties' commitment to supporting Sarawak's digital transformation by enhancing technical education and preparing a future-ready workforce aligned with industrial innovation.'
Halliburton was represented by South East Asia vice president Tomas Benjamin, whereas SDEC was represented by Research and Product Development department head Dr Khairul Hafiz Sharkawi.
Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn officiated at the talk.

The state's largest annual education and career fair has attracted over 50 exhibitors, including companies, public and private higher education institutions, financial aid providers, technical schools, and government departments and agencies, said Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn. The Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister said this year's SCaT Fair, with strong support from Social Security Organisation (Socso) in managing industry participation, will feature walk-in interview sessions for job seekers. 'A total of 1,561 job vacancies across various sectors, including construction, manufacturing and more, will be offered,' he told a press conference at BCCK here today. Sagah said Socso will also organise a Career Exploration Session aimed at empowering future job seekers, especially students, to develop clear career pathways and understand the evolving demands of the job market. He said SCaT Fair will serve as a one-stop centre for students, youth, parents and the community at large, to provide comprehensive information on education and career opportunities, as well as details on educational financial aid available from participating agencies. He added that the fair also aims to enhance the employability and marketability of graduates and youth, as well as empower them to make informed decisions about their futures and nurture interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) among schoolchildren. 'New to this year's fair is the Oil & Gas Zone, managed by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), which will highlight the participation of Petronas, ENEOS Xplora, PTTEP, Mubadala, Brooke Dockyard, Petra Energy and many more,' he emphasised. In addition to employment opportunities, Sagah said the fair will also feature a series of exciting concurrent side programmes, namely the Sarawak Initiative Information Wall, Sarawak Mega Quizzes Challenges, STEM Playground, Skills Master Competition, Sarawak Blockchain & Crypto Day 2025, Sarawak Rocketeer CAN-SAT Challenge, Planetarium Sultan Iskandar (PSI) Dome, Kid's Fun Zone, Youth Icon Speaker Corner and SCaT Kamboh Stage. He encouraged all Sarawakians to participate in the various events and exhibitions at the upcoming SCaT Fair 2025. 26 Sarawak schools receive robotics kits to boost STEM skills

KUCHING (June 19): A total of 26 schools across Sarawak have been selected to receive robotics kits as part of the state's ongoing effort to cultivate digital skills and foster interest in robotics among students. The initiative, under the STEM Trailblazers Sarawak programme, was launched in conjunction with preparations for the National Robotics Competition (NRC) 2025, which will be held from July 17 to 19. In a speech delivered by Sarawak State Education Director Omar Mahli ― represented by Sarawak Education Department (JPN) deputy director (Learning Sector) Siti Zulaiha Ibrahim ― he said the robotics kits were allocated based on specific criteria, with priority given to schools new to national robotics competitions but that have shown strong potential and commitment. 'More importantly, these schools have dedicated teachers who are passionate, willing to learn, and committed to guiding their students in coding and robotics,' he said. A total of 13 primary and 13 secondary schools from 13 District Education Offices across Sarawak were selected under the programme. Omar praised the role of school administrators, principals, and teachers in supporting and sustaining robotics education. 'Without the encouragement and resources provided by school leadership, this programme would not be able to flourish,' he said. He also extended appreciation to partners for their continuous support and collaboration in promoting robotics education. 'To our students, we hope these kits inspire you to think creatively, develop problem-solving skills, and collaborate with your peers. 'Let this be the beginning of an exciting journey into the world of robotics and beyond,' he added.
