Arab Cinema Center returns to Cannes 2025 with four-day programme
Through a series of panels, awards and networking events, the ACC will showcase the depth of Arab cinema, delve into major industry developments across the MENA region, and encourage global dialogue among leading filmmakers, producers and decision-makers.
The Arab Cinema Centre (ACC), in partnership with the Marché du Film, is set to return to the Cannes Film Festival with a four-day programme running from May 15 to 18, 2025. Designed to spotlight the diversity of Arab cinema, the initiative will feature a series of industry panels, award ceremonies and discussions aimed at fostering meaningful dialogue within the global film community.
This year's edition will address critical themes shaping the audiovisual landscape across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), including the rise of regional production hubs, funding challenges and international co-production opportunities. Industry professionals from across the Arab world and beyond—including filmmakers, producers and key decision-makers—are expected to participate.
Alaa Karkouti and Maher Diab, Co-Founders of the Arab Cinema Centre, said: 'This year's Cannes edition marks another year in which we inform, educate, and sing the praises of the pan-Arab cinema industry. We will be highlighting its depth and richness, while at the same time creating an agenda for what remains to be done at an industry level. As always, we'd like to thank Marché du Film for this ongoing collaboration and for the platform it provides to our corner of the world.
'This year, aside from annual events like the Critics Awards for Arab Films and the ceremony to name the Arab Cinema Personality of the Year, we have a bevy of panels lined up for those keen to learn about the Arab World's largest filmmaking hub: Egypt; we will also shine a timely spotlight on Palestinian cinema; and we will examine important new funding avenues for Arab films and the secrets for success when it comes to international co-productions. It's a lot to discuss, but there's no better place to do it than at the Cannes Marché.'
In addition to staple events like the Critics Awards for Arab Films and the Arab Cinema Personality of the Year ceremony, the ACC will host four curated panels. These include sessions examining Egypt's prominent role in Arab cinema, a spotlight on Palestinian filmmaking, insights into authentic Arab co-productions and a discussion on innovative equity financing models for Arab film projects.
The Arab Cinema Personality of the Year will be honoured in a private ceremony on May 15, while the Critics Awards, which launched in Cannes in 2017, will take place on May 17 at the Plage des Palmes, with more than 280 international film critics selecting the winners.
Notable figures participating this year include Egyptian actress Youssra, Royal Film Commission of Jordan's Mohannad Al Bakri, Orascom's Samih Sawiris, Hussein Fahmy, Mohamed Hefzy, Amr Mansi, Morad Mostafa and May Odeh, among many others.

The Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes opens its doors on May 13, 2025, with the film market running until May 21 and the festival concluding its activities on May 24.

The authority's participation in the largest event of its kind in Latin America, which runs until June 22, comes as part of Brazil's celebration of World Book Capitals following the selection of Rio de Janeiro as the World Book Capital for 2025. This prestigious title, which Sharjah held in 2019, recognises the emirate's global standing in supporting culture and the publishing industry. Through its pavilion, SBA shed light on the diversity of the cultural movement in the UAE and the wider Arab world, highlighting major achievements in knowledge, literature and publishing. The authority actively engaged in panel discussions and held meetings with publishers, translators and cultural organisations, to strengthen knowledge exchange and expand opportunities for translating works to and from Arabic. As part of its efforts to build lasting partnerships, SBA invited key players in the publishing industry to take part in the emirate's leading international initiatives, including the Sharjah International Book Fair, the Sharjah Children's Reading Festival, the Sharjah Publishers Conference, the Sharjah International Library Conference and other prominent global events held throughout the year. Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of SBA, affirmed that the authority's participation in the Rio International Book Fair reflects the vision of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, who places culture at the heart of development strategies and views books as a powerful tool for building bridges of dialogue with the world. Al Ameri said: 'Sharjah's presence in Rio highlights the central role of Emirati and Arab culture on the global knowledge map. Today, we are not only sharing our Emirati identity but also fostering a vibrant dialogue between Latin America, with its rich intellectual and cultural heritage, and the Arab world in all its expressions of thought, literature, art, and creativity. The selection of Rio as World Book Capital for 2025 offers us an opportunity to renew and strengthen our partnerships with the cultural community in Latin America.' He added: 'Under the guidance of Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the SBA, we are committed to empowering Emirati and Arab publishers and authors to reach new markets and to developing sustainable support systems that enhance their presence on the global publishing stage.' As part of the cultural programme at the book fair, SBA organised a panel discussion titled, 'The heritage of Arab literature and Sharjah-led new literary movement', which explored the evolution of the Emirati literary landscape and the emirate's vital contribution to nurturing writers and advancing cultural initiatives. On the sidelines of the event, SBA organised a special book signing ceremony for the translated titles, underscoring the authority's commitment to deepening cultural exchange and strengthening the international presence of Emirati literature. During its participation, SBA highlighted several of its leading initiatives in publishing and knowledge exchange. These include the Sharjah International Book Fair, the Sharjah Children's Reading Festival, and the Sharjah Publishing City Free Zone. The authority also introduced the Sharjah Publishing Sustainability Fund (Onshur), an initiative designed to support publishing industries in emerging markets, and the Sharjah Literary Agency, which works to protect the rights of Arab authors and publishers while expanding their international presence. The authority has also drawn attention to the role of Sharjah Public Libraries, one of the region's oldest cultural institutions, which has been promoting knowledge for more than a century. Publishers have been briefed on the specialist international conferences hosted annually in the emirate, including the Sharjah Publishers Conference, the Sharjah International Library Conference, the Booksellers Conference and the Sharjah Animation Conference.

Sharjah Ruler attends SPAA's third batch graduation ceremony

Once it's established, the academy will have three main areas of study: Theatre, Music, and Cinema. His Highness expressed his pride in these initiatives, highlighting how they support the arts and the people who create them. His Highness, "This knowledge is a knowledge that can change many errors, whether in nations or individuals. Thank God, we are proceeding with very calm steps. We do not set foot in a place where there is error, but rather we are correcting this person who will carry the knowledge and who must be upright." You don't have a clear plan to follow, and there are no guarantees. Instead, you face the biggest challenge of all: creating something from nothing. If you succeed, you will experience the true joy of achievement. Be flexible, come up with new ideas, and keep pushing forward. If you think the journey will be easy, this may not be the right path for you. You will encounter difficulties, some of which you cannot control. Don't limit yourselves and don't hold on to resentments. Learn to forgive yourself and others. Stay positive, because a hopeful attitude helps you handle life's challenges better." During the ceremony, artist Zainab Al Askari gave a heartfelt speech as the guest of honor. She expressed her joy and excitement about being part of such a prestigious event that celebrates upcoming artists. The occasion was made even more special by the attendance of His Highness, the President of the Sharjah Academy of Performing Arts. Al Askari highlighted that the Academy has made a long-awaited dream come true for artists who want to develop their skills and share important messages with society. In a time when the world of art faces various challenges, she stressed how vital it is to have such an academy. She also acknowledged the support and care that His Highness offers to artists, helping them grow and shine.
