Chris Sale nearly goes distance as Braves blank Mets
June 19 - Chris Sale pitched 8 2/3 strong innings and the Atlanta Braves blanked the visiting New York Mets 5-0 on Wednesday. The Braves have taken the first two games of the three-game series and have won five of their last six. The Mets have lost five straight games, their longest skid of the season. The Atlanta offense was sparked by home runs from Ronald Acuna Jr., his eighth, and Matt Olson, his 15th. Sale (5-4) allowed five hits, walked one and struck out seven but fell one out short of notching his first complete game and shutout since 2019. He was removed after Brandon Nimmo hit a two-out pop fly single. Raisel Iglesias got Luis Torrens to ground into a fielder's choice, nailing down Atlanta's fourth shutout of the season. New York starter Paul Blackburn (0-1) was lifted after 3 2/3 innings and 73 pitches. He allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts as his ERA soared to 6.92. The Braves jumped on top with three runs in the first inning. Acuna hit Blackburn's first pitch of the game for a home run, a blast that traveled 419 feet to straightaway center field. Alex Verdugo singled, Austin Riley walked, and both advanced on a groundout. Verdugo scored when a pitch bounced away and catcher Torrens tried to stop it with his mask, an infraction that allowed both runners to advance. Riley came home on Marcell Ozuna's sacrifice fly to shallow center field. Atlanta upped the lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning. Ozzie Albies doubled, went to third on a grounder and scored when reliever Jose Butto fired a wild pitch that nearly hit batter Nick Allen as it went to the screen. Olson crushed a slider for a solo homer in the seventh inning, a 412-foot bomb off Ty Adcock, for a 5-0 lead. Olson, who finished 2-for-4, has reached safely in 19 consecutive games. New York's Jeff McNeil went 1-for-3 and has reached safely in his last 20 games, the longest active streak in the majors. --Field Level Media

Braves rally late, edge Mets on sac fly in 10th
June 18 - Austin Riley's long sacrifice fly to center field scored automatic runner Luke Williams with the winning run in the 10th inning to give the Atlanta Braves a 5-4 come-from-behind win over the visiting New York Mets on Tuesday. Atlanta improved to 6-2 in extra-inning games; New York is 4-4. The Mets have lost four in a row. The winning pitcher was Raisel Iglesias (4-5). The losing pitcher was Huascar Brazoban (3-2). New York led 4-1 after five innings but the Braves tied the game in the eighth on Marcell Ozuna's two-out, bases-loaded double against reliever Reed Garrett. Neither starter figured in the decision. New York's David Peterson worked seven strong innings but was lifted after allowing the first two batters to reach in the eighth. He was charged with three runs on five hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Atlanta's Spencer Schwellenbach pitched seven innings and allowed four runs on six hits -- two of them home runs -- with two walks and eight strikeouts. Schwellenbach allowed only two runs in three starts against the Mets last season, but New York tagged him for three runs in the first two innings. Juan Soto hit a 412-foot solo homer in the first inning, his 14th. It was his 20th career homer against the Braves, the most he's struck against any opponent. New York scored a pair of runs in the second. Jeff McNeil led off with a single -- extending his on-base streak to 19 games -- and Francisco Alvarez walked. Both scored when Tyrone Taylor placed a two-out double into right field that eluded the diving effort of Ronald Acuna Jr. Atlanta cut the lead to 3-1 in the third when Matt Olson singled home Acuna, extending his streak of reaching base to 18 consecutive games. New York got the run back in the fifth when Taylor hit his second homer of the season, a 407-foot shot into the left field seats. The start of the game was delayed 56 minutes because of rain in the area. --Field Level Media
