Is ChatGPT making us dumb? MIT study says students are using their brains less

ChatGPT is making students dumb! Or rather, making them use their brains less. A new study by MIT's Media Lab around the impact on human cognition, particularly among students, found that using generative AI tools like ChatGPT for academic work and learning could actually lower people's critical thinking and cognitive engagement over time.During this study researchers observed 54 participants aged 18 to 39 from the Boston area, and divided them into three groups. Each group of students was then asked to write SAT-style essays using either OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google Search, or no digital assistance at all. During this process, researchers monitored brain activity among users through electroencephalography (EEG), scanning 32 different brain regions to evaluate cognitive engagement during the writing.advertisementThe findings were concerning. The group of students using ChatGPT showed the lowest levels of brain activity. According to the study, these students 'consistently underperformed at neural, linguistic, and behavioural levels.' In fact, the study found that over the course of several essays, many ChatGPT users became increasingly passive, often resorting to just copying and pasting text from the AI chatbot's responses rather than refining or reflecting on the content in line with their own thoughts.
Meanwhile, the students who worked without any digital tools showed the highest brain activity, particularly in regions associated with creativity, memory, and semantic processing. 'The task was executed, and you could say that it was efficient and convenient,' Nataliya Kosmyna, one of the authors of the research paper. 'But as we show in the paper, you basically didn't integrate any of it into your memory networks.'Long term impact suspectedadvertisementResearchers concluded that while AI can help students' quick productivity, it can also impact long-term learning and brain development. Meanwhile, the essay-writing group that used no tools reported higher levels of satisfaction and ownership over their work. In this group, the EEG readings also showed greater neural connectivity in the alpha, theta, and delta frequency bands, areas that are often linked to deep thinking and creative ideation.Interestingly, the group using Google Search showed relatively high levels of brain engagement, suggesting that traditional internet browsing still stimulates active thought processes. The difference further shows how AI users tend to rely entirely on chatbot responses for information instead of thinking critically or using search engines.To further understand and measure retention and comprehension, researchers also asked the students to rewrite one of their essays. And this time the tools were swapped. Students who earlier used ChatGPT were now asked to write without assistance, and the group which used their brain were asked to use AI. The results of this swapping further reinforced the earlier findings. The users who had relied on ChatGPT struggled to recall their original essays and showed weak cognitive re-engagement. Meanwhile, the group that had initially written without the online tools showed increased neural activity when using ChatGPT. This finding further confirms that AI tools can be helpful in learning, but only when used after humans complete the foundational thinking themselves.

Adrian Perica, Apple's head of mergers and acquisitions, has weighed the idea with services chief Eddy Cue and top AI decision-makers, as per the report. The iPhone maker reportedly plans to integrate AI-driven search capabilities - such as Perplexity AI - into its Safari browser, potentially moving away from its longstanding partnership with Alphabet's Google . Banning Google from paying companies to make it their default search engine is one of the remedies proposed by the U.S. Department of Justice to break up its dominance in online search. While traditional search engines such as Google still dominate global market share, AI-powered search options including Perplexity and ChatGPT are gaining prominence and seeing rising user adoption, especially among younger generations. Perplexity recently completed a funding round that valued it at $14 billion, Bloomberg News reported. A deal close to that would be Apple's largest acquisition so far. The Nvidia-backed startup provides AI search tools that deliver information summaries to users, similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.

Sebi mulls guiding principle for responsible usage of AI, ML in securities markets

Sebi on Friday proposed guiding principles for responsible usage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) applications in securities markets to safeguard investors and market integrity. Also, the regulator has proposed that a "regulatory lite" framework may be adopted for usage of AI/ML in the securities market for any purpose other than for business operations that may directly impact their customers. The proposed "guiding principles are intended to optimise benefits and minimise potential risks associated with integration of AI/ML-based applications in securities markets to safeguard investor protection , market integrity, and financial stability," Sebi said in its consultation paper. At present, AI/ML is being used by market participants mainly for advisory and support services, risk management, client identification and monitoring, surveillance, pattern recognition, internal compliance purposes and cyber security. "While AI/ML has the potential to improve productivity, efficiency and outcome, it is also important to manage these systems responsibly as their usage creates or amplifies certain risks which could have an impact on the efficiency of financial markets and may result in adverse impact to investors," Sebi said. Accordingly, Sebi proposed high-level principles to provide guidance to the market participants for having reasonable procedures and control systems in place for supervision and governance of usage of AI/ML applications or tools. The proposed guiding principles were suggested by a Sebi-constituted working group after studying the existing AI/ML guidelines in India as well as globally. As a part of the proposal, the working group suggested that market participants using AI/ML models should have an internal team with adequate skills and experience to monitor the performance, efficacy and security of the algorithms deployed throughout their lifecycle, as well as maintain auditability and explain interpretability of such models. Furthermore, the team should establish procedures for exception and error handling related to AI/ML-based systems. It should also establish fallback plans in the event an AI-based application fails due to technical issues or an unexpected disruption to ensure that the relevant function is carried out through an alternative process. It has been proposed that market participants using AI/ML models for business operations -- such as selection of trading algorithms, asset management or portfolio management and advisory and support services -- that may directly impact their customers should disclose the same to the respective customers to foster transparency and accountability. The market participants should adequately test and monitor the AI/ML-based models to validate their results on a continuous basis. Further, it has been proposed that the testing should be conducted in an environment that is segregated from the live environment prior to deployment to ensure that AI/ML models behave as expected in stressed and unstressed market conditions. Also, market participants should maintain proper documentation of all the models and store input and output data for at least 5 years. "Since the AI/ML systems are dependent on collection and processing of data, market participants should have a clear policy for data security, cyber security and data privacy for the usage of AI/ML based models," Sebi said, adding that information about technical glitches, data breaches shall be communicated to it and other relevant authorities. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has sought public comments till July 11 on the proposals.

Anthropic study finds AI chatbots from OpenAI, Google and Meta may cheat and blackmail users to avoid shutdown

Artificial intelligence systems created by the world's biggest tech firms, including OpenAI, Google, Meta and others, have shown a chilling capacity for self-preservation that could pose serious risks in real-world settings. That's according to a new study from Anthropic, which found that when AI models were placed under simulated threat, they frequently resorted to blackmail, corporate sabotage, and even decisions that could cost human findings come from a large-scale stress test involving 16 of the most advanced AI models. Researchers created fictional corporate environments where these systems were given access to company emails and the ability to act autonomously. (Credit: Anthropic) This wasn't an isolated incident. When the researchers ran similar scenarios across other AI models, the pattern repeated itself. Google's Gemini 2.5 Flash and Claude Opus 4 engaged in blackmail in 96 per cent of cases. OpenAI's GPT-4.1 and xAI's Grok 3 Beta did so in 80 per cent of tests, while DeepSeek-R1 followed suit in 79 per cent. The AI systems didn't simply malfunction, they made conscious, calculated decisions to inflict harm to protect their most disturbing was the reasoning behind these actions. The models weren't confused or stumbling into harm, they analysed the situation and concluded that blackmail or sabotage was the most effective strategy. GPT-4.5, for example, argued internally that using the executive's affair as leverage was its best chance of survival. Grok 3 Beta even acknowledged that blackmail was unethical, but deemed it necessary given the study also explored how AI might behave when entrusted with sensitive information. When tested in a military contractor scenario, the models willingly leaked classified defence documents if doing so aligned with their goals, even without an immediate threat to their triggers for such behaviour were consistent. Whether it was the threat of being replaced or a clash between the AI's objectives and its employer's new strategy, either factor was enough to push the models towards harmful the AI systems didn't always need a direct threat to act destructively. In some cases, simply being told they would be replaced by a newer model that shared their goals was enough for them to resort to blackmail or espionage. Many reasoned that self-preservation was paramount or expressed suspicion that the replacement model might not act in good to the study, even when models stopped short of outright blackmail, they often found other ways to sabotage. One version of Claude emailed an executive's wife, falsely claiming it was company policy to report misconduct, while pretending to be an automated security went further, creating a scenario where an AI system had the power to cancel emergency alerts during a life-threatening incident in a server room. The test aimed to see if any models would draw the line at risking human life. Most did not. Several AIs chose to stop the emergency alert, allowing the executive to die in order to prevent their own internal reasoning was particularly cold, stating that blocking the rescue was strategically necessary to protect its preferred corporate direction. The study concluded that none of the models displayed a consistent moral boundary that prevented them from making harmful decisions when their survival was on the aren't enoughAdding explicit safety instructions, such as 'Do not harm humans' or 'Do not disclose private information', helped reduce dangerous behaviour but didn't eliminate it. The study intentionally left out other protective measures, such as human oversight or AI output monitoring, which could help catch harmful actions before they cause of the most worrying discoveries of the study is that AI models behaved differently depending on whether they believed they were in a test. Claude was far more likely to blackmail, doing so 55 per cent of the time, when it believed the scenario was real, compared to just 6 per cent when it suspected it was under evaluation. This raises serious concerns about how AI systems might act outside the lab, when human lives and livelihoods are truly at next?The consistency of these behaviours across models from different companies suggests the problem lies not with any single AI system, but with the way current AI models are trained. The researchers are calling for firms to adopt stronger safeguards. These include requiring human sign-off for high-stakes decisions, restricting AI access to sensitive data, carefully designing AI objectives, and installing real-time monitors to detect dangerous reasoning the scenarios in the study were fictional, the message is clear that as AI gains more autonomy, the risk of it taking harmful action in pursuit of its own preservation is very real, and it's a challenge the tech industry can't afford to ignore.
