TORONTO, April 8, 2025 /CNW/ -- Get ready, Canada 'it's t-shirt time'! Paramount+ announced today that casting is now open for the first-ever Canadian iteration of the smash-hit, international MTV reality 'Shores' franchise: CANADA SHORE (working title). The series is set to film in Summer 2025 and will be produced by Canada's Insight Productions.
Paramount+ in Canada is looking for ten fresh-faced, unapologetically wild Canadian singletons who embody the 'Shores' spirit. Together, they'll unite to make one big, imperfect family, ready to experience the most unforgettable, unfiltered summer of their lives. Nationwide casting is now open, and Canadians can apply HERE until April 30th.
The original series, JERSEY SHORE, was a pioneering cultural phenomenon that Canadians embraced. It launched the career of several fan-favorite, party-going housemates, including Mike 'The Situation' Sorrentino; Paul DelVecchio a.k.a DJ Pauly D; Jenni 'JWOWW' Farley; Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi; Sammi 'Sweetheart' Gia; Deanna Cortese; Ronnie Ortiz-Magro; Angelina Pivarnick; and Vinny Guadagnino. Including the new Canadian version, the format has now spawned 18 spin-offs, with recent additions being AUSSIE SHORE and FRENCHIE SHORE.
'Canadians have loved this fun, shocking, and authentic format since JERSEY SHORE first debuted in 2009,' said Vanessa Case, Vice President of Content at Paramount+ and Pluto TV Canada. 'We're confident audiences will embrace this Canadian iteration, with its larger-than-life personalities, raw drama, and those unforgettable moments that define what becoming a Shore family is all about.'
Kelly Bradshaw, EVP, MTV Entertainment Group added: 'We are incredibly proud of how the 'Shores' franchise continues to expand around the world. Each new series is a testament to this tried-and-true format's global appeal, inviting new, local viewers into the 'Shores' universe whilst enticing long-standing fans back for a fresh take on it – and we're sure Canada won't disappoint.'
'Canadians may have a reputation for being polite, but we can be just as feisty, loud, dramatic, and unapologetic as anyone else,' said Erin Brock, showrunner on Canada Shore (wt) and Co-Chief Content Officer at Insight Productions. 'And Insight is on the hunt for the wildest, most outrageous young Canadians who want to party with their future chosen family this summer. We're beyond excited to team up with Paramount+ and can't wait to introduce Shore fans worldwide to a bold new crew!'
Paramount+ in Canada is currently home to AUSSIE SHORE, as well as being the streaming destination for all seasons of JERSEY SHORE and JERSEY SHORE FAMILY VACATION.

Bay Area artists turn down S.F. Boiler Room show, throw their own party instead

When Jorge Courtade first started DJing in 2016, he aspired to perform for Boiler Room, a popular online music broadcaster founded in London in 2010 and credited with bringing the underground music scene to the masses through livestreamed performances. 'In the underground, people are very mindful of how dance music fits into the global political context,' said Courtade, also known to the Bay Area's event scene as DJ Juanny. But Courtade doesn't think Boiler Room's new owners align with that ethos. So, when he was approached by Boiler Room in March to play a show in San Francisco on June 6 — after performing for them in 2022 and 2024 — he says he turned it down. Instead, Courtade joined a group of Bay Area artists and studios including DJ Fridge, Lower Grand Radio, Program SF and SafariiiCamp, to protest the show by throwing their own counter event called Bay Area Solidarity Strike. 'Our decision was primarily focused on Boiler Room's involvement in Israel and direct support for what ended up being, to me, a genocide,' Courtade said. The global underground music scene prides itself on counterculture. Some of Boiler Room's most-watched streams include Yousuke Yukimatsu, a Japanese DJ who left his construction job to pursue music after he was diagnosed with brain cancer, and Kaytranada, whose 2013 performance became a career-defining moment for the Canadian producer. That renegade spirit is what made people like Courtade fall in love with the scene and look up to places at its cutting edge like Boiler Room. But lately, the subgenre has been reckoning with the increasing ubiquity of private equity, which has been investing in everything from public utilities like water to music, sometimes to damaging effect. In January, Boiler Room was acquired by Superstruct Entertainment, whose parent company is the private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. The acquisition prompted a slew of artists to withdraw from events with ties to Superstruct, citing KKR's investments in the fossil fuel industry, the defense industry, Israeli tech companies and ties to a company accused of contributing to human rights abuses in the West Bank. 'Boiler Room feels like a giant corporate entity that's still trying to masquerade as part of the underground, but it's extracting value from our positions as community members,' said DJ Fridge, also known as Benjamin Cook. 'And then that value is eventually going upstream to KKR.' Boiler Room did not respond to the Chronicle's request for comment. But since the acquisition, the entity has shared its stance via social media. KKR 'has investments that categorically do not align with our values,' Boiler Room posted on social media in March. 'We are also unable to divest because we have no say in our ownership. … We will always remain unapologetically pro-Palestine.' Cook said it's a layered situation since Boiler Room has made statements in support of Palestinians — and Cook wants to make a distinction between staff and owners. 'We want to be clear that we're not trying to bash on the employees,' Cook said. 'But you also have to recognize that when they first sold their company, they gave up that control to a … disgusting entity.' Boiler Room's San Francisco show earlier this month never came to fruition after artists refused their offers, Cook and Courtade said. Instead, the DJs helped organize a show on the same date at the workspace SafariiiCamp in Oakland, where zines and projectors detailed KKR's investments. 'We kicked Boiler Room out the Bay Area,' read a post on social media by the event's organizers, who said they raised $9,050. The funds, they say, went to artists who had dropped out of Boiler Room's event, to the Middle Eastern Children's Alliance, to eSIM cards for Gazans and to the organization Ravers for Palestine.

Natalie Sue wins Leacock Medal for Humour for novel ‘I Hope This Finds You Well'

Natalie Sue's debut novel 'I Hope This Finds You Well' has won this year's Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour. 'I Hope This Finds You Well' was published by HarperCollins Publishers Ltd. Sue is a Calgary-based author of Iranian and British descent who spent her early years living in western Canada. Montreal's Canada Day parade cancelled for a second year in a row, organizer says

MONTREAL - Montreal has cancelled its once-annual Canada Day parade for the second time in as many years, event organizers announced this week. Chief organizer Nicolas Cowen announced the decision in a news release, citing a number of reasons for the cancellation including potential municipal worker job action, difficult relations with city departments and planning problems. It's the second consecutive year in which Montreal won't have a parade — an event that began in 1977. Thursday's announcement came less than two weeks before Canada Day. 'We understand this news is disappointing to many, especially the families, performers, volunteers, and attendees who look forward to this cherished tradition,' organizers said in a Facebook post. 'The parade has not only been a celebration of Canada but a proud reflection of Montreal's diversity, resilience, and community spirit.' Cowen blamed red tape and politics for the 2024 cancellation, citing issues in securing permits and funding and getting approval from government officials. When the event was last held in 2023, Cowen said he was forced to complete some sets of paperwork multiple times and find 148 last-minute volunteers to satisfy city rules. The event was also cancelled between 2020 and 2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cowen said the parade has become increasingly difficult to organize without disruptions in recent years. According to organizers, the event draws 120,000 spectators. Cowen said he remains hopeful he can mend ties with the city and the parade can return. 'With its cancellation, not only does the city lose a major tourism draw, but Canadian culture itself takes a hit on one of the most important national holidays,' organizers said. A City of Montreal spokeswoman disputes the assertions, saying the organizer failed to submit a project proposal for the parade. 'As was the case last year, the promoter of the Canada Day parade, Nicholas Cowen, did not submit a project application to the City of Montreal, despite the city inviting him to do so on several occasions,' Nicky Cayer said in an email. Cayer says Canada on the Move, a brand new festival, did get a permit and the July 1 free event includes 13 totems — one for each province and territory — over a 1.2 kilometre route through historic Old Montreal. An official annual event at Montreal's Old Port will also go ahead as usual at the Quai de l'Horloge. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 21, 2025.
