'I congratulated David Beckham on knighthood – the jury's out on what he said'
Sky Sports presenter Alex Aljoe was taken aback by Sir David Beckham's response to her Real Madrid question, as Micah Richards claims the former England international was "definitely lying"
Sky Sports presenter Alex Aljoe hinted that she might not believe David Beckham's insistence that he remembers their interview from his playing days at Real Madrid. Aljoe, who is working for DAZN at the Club World Cup, came into contact with Beckham once more at the opening game of the tournament.
She discussed the encounter on The Rest Is Football with Micah Richards, Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer. The story about Beckham's great memory didn't take long to erupt into chaos, as Richards claimed the former Manchester United star was "definitely lying".
The popular Sky Sports reporter delved into her experience at the first game, where she chatted with Beckham about a previous meeting from his Madrid days. Aljoe said: "Well, that opening game was amazing, they had an opening ceremony as well.
"[There were] fireworks, French Montana performing...then the players came out one by one, Beckham was there. Sorry, Sir David Beckham was there.
"I congratulated him on his knighthood and asked if he remembered me from years ago, when I interviewed him at Real Madrid. He said yes, but the jury's out on that one."
Richards replied with a smirk: "He was lying. He was lying, he was definitely lying," which prompted Lineker to add: "Knights don't lie Alex. Knights of the realm do not lie!"
Richards offered to contact the ex-United star for Aljoe, causing Shearer to explode into laughter as he said: "Listen to him, 'I can text him for you', what a k*** you are!"
Beckham was recently awarded a knighthood in King Charles' Birthday Honours, a moment that the Premier League icon has called a "truly humbling and emotional moment" for him.
The 50-year-old said: "Growing up in east London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British, I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour.
"To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career, and literally a boyhood dream come true."
Beckham added: "I'm so lucky to be able to do the work that I do, and I'm grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment.

Next up for Beckham's Inter Miami squad is a tough test against Porto on Thursday evening, with Madrid taking on their opening game of the tournament against Al-Hilal on Wednesday night at 8pm.

The cycle was not without its hiccups along the way. But there were joyous scenes in Dublin as the team, which also included Kenny and Gabby Logan, completed the journey and they celebrated with bottles of pink prosecco and Guinness. The journey continued as the cyclists delivered the match ball, which travelled the 555-miles with them, at the British and Irish Lions' 1888 Cup clash with Argentina at the Aviva Stadium. McCoist told PA: 'I'm a west coast of Scotland man, and it's so similar, absolutely beautiful, green - in some places it's almost lunar with the rocks - it was fantastic. "The weather we've had last couple of days, beautiful greenery over the Guinness Lake. 'So we're gonna come back, no bikes involved, I'm gonna take the car and we're gonna do a little bit of tour. The husband and wife said thinking of how the 'cruel' disease takes away a person's control of their body inspired them to keep going along the most gruelling parts of the cycle. Kenny Logan thanked the people of Ireland for cheering them on along the way by beeping horns and donating any amount they could. He said: 'We went to one coffee shop, told her what we were doing. She said 'My uncle died of MD'. She gave us 50 coffees and all the food for free. So it's been amazing.' Gabby Logan said the final day was 'really physically challenging', as they climbed 1,250 metres in a few hours, but also provided a profound moment for the cyclists through stunning scenery in Co Wicklow. 'There was quite a lot of solitude today, because we weren't going through villages and towns, we were going through beautiful scenery. "(It gave) a lot of time for people to think about why they're doing this today, and you can see the outpouring of emotion at the end. 'It's about finding cure and a solution to a terrible, terrible disease which just rips away people and their lives and at the moment, there's no hope.' Asked what Weir would have thought of on Friday, Kenny said: 'He'd think we're idiots, genuinely.' He said it was 'amazing' to have Weir's wife Kathy on the cycle on the final day, and to have Doddie's son Hamish following the cycle for the week, who was originally meant to take part but had broken his shoulder. The challenge has raised more than £557,000 for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and My Name'5 Doddie Foundation, which Weir set up in 2017, a year after being diagnosed with MND. Gareth Bale consortium in bid to buy Cardiff
The 35-year-old former Real Madrid and Wales forward was understood to be part of a consortium that had conversations regarding a takeover of Plymouth earlier this week, along with several other clubs, but it appears they have now turned their attention to south Wales. The Athletic reports that the consortium sent current Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan a letter of intent last month, which included financial figures, but it was rejected. Bale is seeking to be the latest big sporting name to be associated with an EFL club. His former Real team-mate Luka Modric became an investor in and co-owner of Championship side Swansea in April, while ex-NFL quarterback Tom Brady has a minority stake in Birmingham. Cardiff declined to comment on Friday night. Bale retired from football in January 2023 at the age of 33. He won five Champions League titles with Real and is the men's all-time record goalscorer for Wales with 41 in 111 caps. He was linked with an emotional move to Cardiff, his hometown club, after leaving Madrid in 2022 but instead joined MLS side LAFC. Bale featured for Wales at the 2022 World Cup – their first appearance at the global finals since 1958 – and at the Euros in 2016 and 2020. Cardiff were relegated to League One last season and appointed Brian Barry-Murphy as their new manager this week.
