Jiaxing Train Station by Ma Yansong and his firm MAD Architects is a striking example of how contemporary infrastructure can harmonize with historical context and natural surroundings. Located in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, southwest of Shanghai, the project reimagines the traditional concept of a transportation hub, blending advanced design with cultural sensitivity. The station was conceived as a 'train station in the forest', featuring a gently undulating roof covered in greenery that seamlessly integrates the structure into the surrounding parkland.
Beneath this green canopy lies a modern transport facility equipped to handle high-speed rail and daily commuters, while above, the original 1907 station has been meticulously reconstructed as a cultural landmark. MAD's design reflects Ma Yansong's ongoing exploration of 'Shanshui City' principles, merging nature, urban space and emotional resonance. By sinking much of the functional infrastructure underground, the design frees up surface-level space for pedestrian access and public use, turning the station into a civic destination rather than merely a transit point. Jiaxing Train Station not only improves connectivity, but also offers a vision of how architecture can foster a sense of community and continuity with the past, while embracing the future. Ma Yansong shares details about the project.
Why did you decide to construct a 1:1 replica of the historic station building, while creating a new train station underground?
Transportation is one of the keys that links up the whole system and helped us to develop the concept of a museum intervened by time. I want this place to be open to everyone and enable the public to fully engage with the ecology and cultural content. By restoring the historic building 1:1, it becomes a museum of time, a conversation between the past and the future. The history of this 100-year-old train station is also the history and culture of this city. We redefined culture, subjugating history in such cases that symbolize the timeline of urban development, and projected the museum to an epitome of the old railway station 100 years ago. This kind of 1:1 restatement endowed the architecture with its own story to tell while respecting history.

Tell me about the history of the Jiaxing Railway Station and how you're connecting old and new.
Jiaxing Railway Station was first built in 1907 and put into use in 1909. It was an important transportation hub on the Shanghai-Hangzhou line at that time. In 1921, when some delegates of the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party came to Jiaxing by train, the railway station became an important historical witness of the great meeting. But the station was later destroyed by the Japanese in 1937.
After the restoration, the old station house becomes the History Museum of Jiaxing Railway Station, and will no longer assume the function of the main railway station house. The significance of this restoration is not in the restoration of the function, but more in the culture, whether it can trigger people's emotional resonance for the history of the place. In this sense, the restored station house is still 'real'. It still has historical images and stories, and it is very important to me that these stories have a relationship with the new space.
Immediately adjacent to the restored station house is the 'floating' metal roof of the new station house. To echo the scale of the old station building, the new station building's entry/exit platform and waiting hall have been relegated to the ground level, with only one floor above ground 'fading' into the height. The black bridge canopy and the new silver platform form a continuous line, which is a metaphor for the relationship between the past and the future. In the underground of the station, I intentionally created a futuristic 'time tunnel'.
Very often, for many traditional civilizations and histories in China, there is a limited concept that often does not allow the past and the new to coexist. Sometimes we duplicate old things and come up with many fake antiques. Like the old streets in so many cities, which were meant to bring out the history, turned out to be repetitions everywhere. Today, at the Jiaxing Railway Station, passengers in the new waiting room can look up to see the restored station house. The old and new station houses coexist together.

Because the word 'sustainability' has been overused and oftentimes 'abused', what is your definition of sustainability?
For sustainability, there are two aspects, one is the data ecology in terms of energy savings. It is a fairly large number. The entire roof of the two station houses is covered by solar panels. We basically designed architectures that generate electricity. All the energy goes into the city's electricity grid, and it will power the entire area, even the underground and landscape lighting. The other aspect I consider is sustainability within the cultural context, how it continues in the long term. Respect history and heritage, but reactivate them with new power. If we think about it, the life of a building comes from the profoundness of its culture or its vitality. Looking at the cultural heritages that we are protecting today, architecture especially is preserved as a material and preserved to today as self-explainable human evidence conveying the pursuit of different time periods in history, although they each symbolize different materialities and technologies of that time.
Do you believe that the Jiaxing Train Station can serve as a model for sustainable practices for other transport infrastructure projects around the world, impact policy and change industry standards?
I think most of the railway stations in China are pretty much standardized, and it is very difficult to be innovative with all the restrictions. Innovation sits itself beyond the response to an urban condition. We have to arrive at an understanding that most of the commonalities are particularly easy to replicate due to globalization or commercialization. For architecture such as offices, residences, retail shops, airports and railway stations, the uniqueness of such designs will be rapidly copied from one place to another, across cities and countries, despite any cultural sustainability and characteristics of different urban contexts. This type of architecture should be more rooted culturally, more customized with the unique characteristics of the location in the post-globalization era – its history, culture and visions. I think this is constantly what MAD is looking for, and what we discover on each project: a new journey.

IShowSpeed When American YouTuber IShowSpeed – real name Darren Watkins Jr – came across a dancing car in China's technology hub of Shenzhen, he reacted in typically breathless fashion. 'You see what I'm talking about?' he shouts at the camera. 'This is where they be making this stuff at – it's Shenzhen!' It was one of many effusive outbursts during a livestream stretching almost six hours, in which the social media star ordered a KFC by drone, rode in a flying car and bought a Huawei triple-folding phone. The video by IShowSpeed, who has more than 40m subscribers on YouTube, was perhaps the clearest example yet of Western influencers promoting China's technological capabilities and culture. It marks a new frontier in Chinese propaganda efforts, as the country seeks to control the narrative overseas and not just at home. Russia and China are already believed to be spending as much as £8bn a year to bolster their media presence globally, primarily in developing countries in the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. It is a trend that has raised particular concerns in Britain amid crippling cuts to the BBC World Service. However, China's latest initiative to attract influencers, described as the 'ultimate cultural exchange', demonstrates a more concerted effort to win hearts and minds. The Communist Youth League of China is inviting influencers under the age of 35 with more than 300,000 social media followers to apply to take part in a 10-day trip that will include visits to Suzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Handan and Beijing. Successful applicants can apply to have their travel expenses reimbursed. For government officials, the motive is clear. By harnessing the 'authentic' voices of influencers, Beijing wants to target a more subtle way of spreading soft power. 'It's becoming more sophisticated,' says Neil O'Brien, of the China Research Group of Tory MPs. 'Less crass stuff and more new media. Lord knows how much they are spending.' Helena Ivanov, at the Henry Jackson Society think tank, adds: 'I think many people are, to a certain degree, underestimating the extent to which China is investing in disinformation because China doesn't necessarily do it in an in-your-face style like, for example, Russia does. 'But the fact that it's under the radar doesn't mean that it's not out there and I think China has been very good at capturing the ways through which it can disseminate its disinformation.' What's more, publishing content on online platforms such as YouTube allows China to present its message to younger audiences. Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, TikTok and X were the top five news sources used by 16 to 24-year-olds last year, according to Ofcom. A recent survey by Ipsos found that almost half of young people trust influencers, while 55pc get news from them every day. This is particularly concerning given some of their content. It doesn't take long on social media to find British vloggers posting fluffy videos from the Xinjiang province that play down concerns about alleged human rights abuses against Uyghur Muslims. Others post videos vowing to give their subscribers the 'truth' about China and expose Western media 'lies'. Such claims have fuelled concerns that Beijing is using sites such as TikTok, owned by Beijing-headquartered ByteDance, to spread its propaganda. The latest initiative also suggests Beijing is formalising a strategy already deployed by some of its companies. In 2023, Chinese fast fashion brand Shein, which has been accused of using forced labour and other human rights abuses, invited influencers on an all-expenses-paid trip to its manufacturing facilities in Guangzhou. The result was unsurprising. In one now-deleted video, influencer Destene Sudduth, who has 4m followers on TikTok, claimed to have seen clean factories and happy workers. Shein has said it has a zero-tolerance policy on forced labour and is committed to respecting human rights. For Beijing, though, the influencer push hints at a more understated method. Rather than ramming its political points home via state media, the regime is seeking alternative means to burnish China's credentials as a technological and cultural hub. With TikTok dominating the social media sphere and as more Westerners turn to Chinese-made phones and electric cars, authorities are hoping to transform the country into a desirable – even fashionable – brand. In turn, China hopes young people in the West will be willing to overlook the country's questionable track record on democracy and human rights. Meanwhile, China's efforts to open its doors to social media stars are particularly striking given Donald Trump's apparent determination to do the opposite. Khaby Lame, often considered the world's biggest TikTok personality, has left the US after being targeted in Trump's immigration crackdown. Others also point to the fact that the US president is still considering a potential ban or forced sale of TikTok, though this week he gave the company a third reprieve by granting it an extra 90 days to find a buyer. Yet efforts to silence influencers are not only undemocratic; they are also unlikely to work. Enterprising streamers will simply decamp to a different platform, experts say, as many TikTokers have already demonstrated by setting up on rival YouTube Shorts. Ivanov says China's increasing use of influencers is 'extremely concerning'. 'You can't stop it any more. Pandora's box has opened,' she adds. As a result, she suggests that the West cannot ignore China's sophisticated new soft power strategy. No longer is Beijing simply pumping out crude propaganda on state-run channels. £20m investment to secure Fishguard port's future

A ferry company says it plans to invest up to £20m to upgrade Fishguard port. Stena Line's investment will pay for a new linkspan, a type of drawbridge which allows vessels to move on and off a ferry. It is hoped building work will begin in 2026, and that the new bridge will be ready in 2027. A spokesperson for the company said the announcement signalled a firm commitment to the port for the "next 30 to 40 years". Ferry terminal 'losing out' to rival Ferry company 'fully committed' to port Welsh ports had 30% less traffic 'due to Brexit' A previous project to build a new linkspan was cancelled in 2018 which caused concern locally about the future of the port. The company had already invited tenders for the construction project when it made the announcement. At the time it was said the current single lane linkspan, installed in the early 1970s, was approaching the end of its life. Stena line operates a twice daily roll-on roll-off ferry service between Fishguard and Rosslare in the Republic of Ireland. Fishguard port saw an increase in sailings after Holyhead was closed after berthing terminals were damaged there during Storm Darragh in December 2024. The Pembrokeshire port was used to provide relief freight sailings to Dublin and to help clear a backlog of traffic caused by the closure of the berths at Holyhead. The largest ever ferry to visit Fishguard, the Stena Adventurer, docked at the port during the disruption caused by Storm Darragh. Ian Davies from Stena Line admitted the investment was "overdue" but the new linkspan will provide far more flexibility. He said: "It'll offer many things. Because the structure is a lot bigger, in essence it means that in future we can fit any size of ferry on to this berth which we don't have that flexibility at the moment. "As was shown during Storm Darragh, and the issues up at Holyhead, we were able to bring some other ships in to Fishguard but it was quite a struggle to do that. This really adds to the resilience that Stena Line ports have. We can bring vessels in, change vessels around, if and when the circumstances arise. "It brings us right up to date. It's a commitment really for the next 30-40 years that we have the infrastructure now to take this port to wherever the business takes us." Haulier Peter Harding, who has been operating from his base in Pembrokeshire for more than 34 years and uses Fishguard regularly, said the news was "very welcome". "It will make the loading and unloading a lot more efficient and quicker," he said. "And not only that, it won't limit it to certain ships that can dock. Now, other ships can dock as well. Going back six months ago when Holyhead was closed, the staff and Fishguard as a whole really upped their game to the amount of freight that was coming through there - it was unbelievable. "I just think that this is a fantastic thing to be happening for north Pembrokeshire. South Pembrokeshire seems to get the spotlight on lots of things and it's good for the local community. It's good for jobs. It's a win-win situation." Building work is likely to begin in 2026, and the port will have to close for six to eight weeks during that time. The new linkspan should be completed in 2027. About 100 people from Pembrokeshire work on the shoreside operations and on the route between Fishguard and Rosslare.
