Ten Minutes with Sarah Allen of Flook

Irish Post27-05-2025

FOR three decades, Flook have been at the cutting edge of folk music, blending dynamic energy with inventive musicality. Flook's fifth album Sanju was released in May and is available on all digital platforms and on www.flook.co.uk The band also just been awarded prestigious 'Group of the Year' title at the annual TG4 Gradam Ceoil Awards which can be viewed on line at tg4.ie Flute player Sarah Allen took time out to answer our questions
What are you up to, Sarah?
Right now, I am rushing around preparing for our upcoming Flook tour of Japan. We've been to Japan quite a few times over the years—it's one of our favourite places to tour. The people are so kind and respectful and friendly, and the pace toggles between super calm and super frenetic. It will be great to be back. We called our latest recording Sanju, which very broadly speaking is the Japanese word for 30, as Flook are celebrating our 30th anniversary this year.
Which piece of music always sends a shiver down your spine?
Allegri's Miserere
Which musician or singer has most influenced you?
A chance meeting with legendary free improvising jazz drummer John Stevens single-handedly changed the course of my musical life. From there on in everything I had previously learned about music was challenged and reset; it was the starting point of a much more creative and fulfilling musical journey.
What's on your smartphone playlist at the minute?
I've been listening a lot to Bonny Light Horseman's latest release Keep Me on Your Mind / See You Free - I saw them live at The Roundhouse last Autumn - they were AMAZING! I'm also really enjoying The Charming Smile and the Glorious Life from up and coming band Wesley. The lead singer Jamie is the son of my good friend Al Jones, fiddle player from The Barely Works. Other favourites include Laura Wilkie's new album Vent and Brìghde Chaimbeul's new single Bog an Lochan.
What are your family roots in Ireland?
My Irish roots are only very distant, from way back in the 1600s when my forefathers on my father's side came from up around where Brian (Finnegan) lives in the Armagh area, before they emigrated to Australia.
What is your favourite place in Ireland?
I love the bustle of Galway and the wildness of West Cork.
What has been your favourite venue?
We played with Dreamers' Circus last November at Islington's Union Chapel and will be back there for our own gig this coming November - it's such a beautiful space to play music and to hear music - almost other worldly.
Which living person do you most admire?
My Dad. The tune Ninety Years Young on our new Flook recording Sanju was written for him, though this year it will be dedicated to my Mum (equally admired) for her big birthday in May this year.
Which trait in others do you most admire?
Kindness
What would be your motto?
Peace comes when you realise that everything that's out of control should be out of your mind too.
What's the best advice you've ever been given?
Always stay curious
In terms of inanimate objects, what is your most precious possession?
My Granny's wedding ring. It was her one remaining treasured possession and she gave it to me shortly before she died.
What's best thing about where you live?
The street where I live, on the shabbier side of Hampstead Heath, must be one of the friendliest places in London; everyone looks out for everyone else. Plus we have the Heath across the road with its Lido and swimming ponds.
. . . . and the worst?
I'm struggling to think of anything I don't like!
Who/what is the greatest love of your life?
My daughter, Maisy - recently turned 18 and shortly heading off on her own adventures

She finished her workout look with bronzed makeup and went on to defend her choice to wear cosmetic products in the gym. Sarah wrote alongside the snap: "Someone actually asked me… 'Are you seriously wearing makeup to the gym?' "Yep. I am. I'm not doing it for you, I'm doing it for ME! More on Sarah Jayne Dunn "A bit of tinted moisturiser and mascara. Not full glam. Just enough to feel like I've got my sh*t together before I throw some weights around. "And honestly? I'm bored of the judgement. "Since when did wearing makeup mean you're not serious about your workout? "Some women feel their best fresh faced. Some love a bit of glow and gloss. Some genuinely couldn't care less. ALL of it is valid." Most read in Showbiz She added: "Wearing makeup doesn't mean I'm insecure. Not wearing it doesn't mean you're more confident. "Let's not turn personal choice into a personality trait. Soap star hits back as she's mum-shamed over racy pics "So yeah, I lift, I sweat, I push myself hard… with a bit of blush and mascara on. Shocking, I know." The former soap star, who played Mandy Richardson on Hollyoaks from 1996 to 2021, famously left the show after . Despite the star admitting that she's thriving in her new OnlyFans role, it doesn't come without it's criticism. Sarah recently hit back after being mum-shamed over her racy photos. They ordered her to quit adult subscription site OnlyFans, where she was flogging risque shots, or be axed. While she's been making big money on the platform, having claimed to have taken home £700,000 in 2022, Sarah has found herself the target of cruel trolling. Taking to Instagram to confront her latest bully, she sarcastically responded to their nasty comment. The follower had written: "Yeah why not just make sure your kids get bullied because of your content just so you can get a little validation from people you don't know, good idea." But Sarah - who shares son Stanley, nine, with her husband Jonathan Smith - made sure to clap back with humour, pretending to read a positive one in a get-ready-with-me video. With the aforementioned jibe shown on the screen, she instead read: "Thanks for your inspiring content. Your son is really lucky to have a mom like you that loves him so much. Please show us some more of your outfits." Sarah then enthused: "Of course I will! What a kind, kind comment. Thank you. I will happily show you another outfit," before proceding to talk her fans through what she had been wearing. At the end, she concluded: "Thanks again for that really, really lovely, positive comment." The actress quit the Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks said it doesn't allow cast members to be active on certain 18+ websites because of the show's responsibility to its young audience. Speaking about posting on OnlyFans before, Sarah said it was "about taking back control, about empowerment and confidence and having full power over my choices". 3 Sarah had a clever response for a troll who commented on her son Credit: The Mega Agency

Onimusha 2 – Samurai's Destiny Remastered review: Sharpness of sword saga softened by superannuated systems

Games are not like movies in that old favourites often can't be played on newer consoles due to the inexorable march of technology. Yet a remaster is no little undertaking and so publishers must have a strategy as to which to give the makeover. Is it based on enduring popularity or the need for a marketing assist? Capcom's Japanese hack'n'slash franchise Onimusha shone briefly in the early 2000s with four entries in the series selling well. Each instalment followed a samurai and his allies pursuing the supernaturally evil warlord Nobunaga and his hordes of demons. But diminishing returns left Onimusha dormant until a remaster in 2019 was politely if unenthusiastically received. So why then six years later do we have this redux of the second in the series, albeit the best-selling episode? It probably hopes to stir interest in the big-budget series revival Onimusha: Way of the Sword – due in 2026. For now, Samurai's Destiny Remastered gives us a glimpse into the past of a different mindset in game design – one that makes the player suffer unnecessarily. Digging out my own review of the 2002 version from more than two decades ago, my biggest complaint was about the awkward tank-style controls that overcomplicated combat. Capcom wisely fixed that issue for the remaster by adding more sensible left-stick controls. But it presumably would have been much harder to address the non-scrolling level design where your character flicks from screen to screen as he reaches the edge. The concept was inherited from Capcom's Resident Evil but made more sense there in a slow-moving survival horror. Here in fast-moving Onimusha 2, it's a design flaw that becomes a frequent frustration when enemies attack from off-screen. Worse still, your samurai regularly bamboozles your sense of his direction with a sudden, sometimes involuntary shift in camera angle as the level unfolds. It affords your foes too many cheap hits and confounds your internal compass. All of this undermines what remains an enjoyably batty adventure blessed by an intricate combat system intersecting with some fabulous monster designs. The high-def glow-up papers over the game's PS2 origins and Capcom supplies a decent amount of bonus content in the form of artwork galleries and the like. If nothing else, it whets the appetite for next year's big Onimusha revival, so perhaps that's job done after all.

90s music legend leaves restaurant stunned after blowing hundreds on luxury sushi order after epic UK gigs

BACK in his Nineties pomp, Robbie Williams was fuelled by a diet of drugs and alcohol. Nowadays things are very different – with the teetotaller instead preferring to gorge on high-class sushi to get through his gigs. He put in one order for himself and his crew on Friday afternoon for a feast including salmon sashimi, abura-age tofu nigiri and vegetable futomaki. And the Let Me Entertain You singer loved the Japanese restaurant – which features in the Michelin Guide – so much that he put in a second order, worth a hefty £278, the following day. Robbie played to sell-out crowds at the city's Royal Crescent, with a total of 30,000 fans watching him across the two nights. Advertisement A source said: 'The order was put in under Robbie's name, but a member of his crew came to collect it. "Robbie and his whole team really enjoyed the food.' A spokesman for the restaurant said: 'We did receive a significant special order for collection on both Friday and Saturday.' You can't blame the star for treating himself to a healthy dinner before smashing it on stage. KELLY: 'THERE'S NO JUNK IN MY TRUNK ON TOUR' STEREOPHONICS frontman Kelly Jones has revealed he's axed junk food and booze from his tour rider – after his jeans stopped fitting. The Handbags And Gladrags singer told Bizarre he's now more likely to ask for some weights to pump iron than lager and pizza. 7 Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones has axed junk food and booze from his tour rider Credit: Splash Advertisement Speaking ahead of the band's Isle of Wight lead festival slot this weekend Kelly, inset, said: 'The Nineties were crazy – a totally different social situation. It's like another planet now. 'I think there are some things on our rider that are still the same as back then – because nobody has bothered to change it. 'There's always beer and wine. It used to be 12 boxes of pizza and a crate of lager. But when your jeans stop fitting you, you've got to get that right – those requests doesn't work at 50!' Hinting he's all about home-grown organic grub, the singer added: 'Let's say the takeaway order at the end of the night is a little more extravagant and healthier these days. 'We all still travel on the bus together, we all still go out for dinner together, we go for a drink after together. "Thankfully, we all get on – not every band does – and we've had the same crew for 25 years, so it's a family-orientated vibe.'
