What do you do when your band is invited to open for Oasis? Grab a pint, of course
There's only one thing to do when you find out you're opening for the legendary British band Oasis – head to the pub to celebrate.
That's precisely what Sam Cromack, frontman of Brisbane-based indie-rock band Ball Park Music, says they did when they received the call inviting them to join Noel and Liam Gallagher on tour in Australia later this year.
'We've come to not expect these kinds of massive, mind-blowing opportunities,' says Cromack. 'At first, they just say you're in the mix with a bunch of other bands, and in the past, we've known that's not good. We never come out on top. So it was truly a euphoric moment when we got the call to say the contract is signed, it's real, it's going ahead.'
Opening for Oasis is undeniably the biggest opportunity they've received since forming in 2008, says guitarist Dean Hanson. 'We've played live so much over so many years in so many different places, so getting up in front of tens of thousands of people will be great. It feels like we've been practising for over a decade.'
It's hardly overnight success. They have released eight studio albums, six of which have featured in the ARIA top five. Earlier this month their new album, Like Love, became their first ARIA Albums Chart No.1 when it debuted in the top spot, also becoming the first Australian No.1 this year. They've done more than 500 live shows, including at SXSW in Texas, and will set out on a Like Love national tour in May.
But supporting Oasis is next-level – Ball Park Music will be playing huge stadiums (Marvel in Melbourne and Accor in Sydney). If these spaces are even a third or half full by the time the band begins playing, Cromack says it will still be their largest audience by far.
As nerve-racking as this may sound, he says the stage, regardless of its size, will always be a safe space.

Emily decided on Oliva as the third headliner after being stunned by her 2022 performance at Worthy Farm. The festival organiser added: "She came off the stage in tears. It was so incredible. When you see an artist who's so young storming through, it's really exciting.' However, Emily - who is one of five Eavis children - admits she doesn't always get to see the bands and artists she wants to over the course of the weekend because of her responsibilities running the festival site. She said: "I try my best, but it depends on what's happening on site at the time. But it is really important to watch because you're creating this huge show of artists, bands, and activities, and then if you miss them all, it's a bit gutting.' The festival is being held for the 53rd time and it has changed a lot since it began in 1970, when just 1,500 people attended. Now, 200,000 people, including more than 2,000 performers across over 100 stages, head to Pilton, Somerset, South West England, and Emily has taken measures to ease the overcrowding that caused some stages to be shutdown in 2024, including sets by Charli XCX, Avril Lavigne and the Sugababes, with one measure being to sell fewer tickets and another to create a new field called Dragon's Tail for partygoers in the late night area of the site who wish to take a break. Emily said: "Crowding is something we're going to address. "I think the issue was that people were moving in similar directions, so we're trying to spread the programming out by putting more high level artists on at the same time. Also telling people that there's 10 routes to anywhere; you don't have to go the one way you think you have to. There's also endlessly interesting things you can find that aren't at massive stages or with big crowds. "I hope [the whole site] feels nice and roomy for people."

How Gallagher brothers' mother 'instigated' end of feud
Noel and Liam Gallagher's mother was the 'instigator' of their reconciliation. The brothers hadn't spoken since Oasis split following a series of rows in 2009 but they are currently preparing for their reunion tour, and though Peggy Gallagher urged them to put their differences aside, she insisted she couldn't have made them do anything they didn't want to do. 'I was the instigator, yes. But sure, wasn't it always going to happen at some time or other?' she told Ireland's Mail on Sunday newspaper. 'It was their choice, of course. 'Look, you can't force them to do things they don't want to do. 'You just have to say, 'Get on with it' and I said that.' The 82-year-old matriarch is relieved her warring sons have finally made up. 'It's great, because nobody wants their kids falling out, do they?' she said. Peggy is looking forward to seeing Noel and Liam back on stage with Oasis over the summer. But she admitted: 'I'll be glad when it's all just over because it makes me get too stressed.' The Irishwoman is hoping to travel to her homeland to see Oasis perform in Croke Park, but she has just had a knee replacement operation so is currently unsure as to whether she will be fit enough to make the journey from her home in Manchester. 'I'm hoping to get to the Oasis concert in Dublin in August if I can hobble around,' she said. 'That's my plan anyway... it will be great.' 'I know the Irish fans are thrilled about it. There's great excitement in Ireland about the reunion tour and it will be lovely to see family there, also my sister Kathleen. I am really looking forward to the Dublin one.' Nearly 100 private jets to fly to Venice for Bezos' wedding
More than 90 private jets carrying around 200 celebrity guests to the wedding of Amazon founder Jef Bezos and Lauren Sánchez are expected to arrive at Venice's Marco Polo airport over the days ahead, the Corriere della Sera newspaper has reported. Among those arriving in their own jets are TV personalities Oprah Winfrey, Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian and billionaires Eric Schmidt of Google and Bill Gates of Microsoft. 'Marco Polo airport will practically become the global capital of the star system for almost a week,' the newspaper reported on Monday. Citing aviation sources, it said that 95 landings had thus far been registered. The first guests are expected on Tuesday. The city is already thronged with tourists crowding its narrow streets. It is not yet known when Bezos, 61, and Sánchez, 55, will arrive. The wedding celebration is expected to be held on Friday. Italian media report that Bezos' private yacht, the Koru, is currently off the Croatian coast. The couple is reported to have booked a suite at the Aman Venice, a hotel on the Grand Canal, where George Clooney and his wife Amal stayed when they got married in the city in 2014. The entire week has been arranged by London-based event managers Lanza Baucina.
