India now has 111 national waterways, up from 5 under UPA: Union Minister Sonowal
Patna (Bihar) [India], June 16 (ANI): Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, said on Monday that the number of national waterways in India has increased to 111 under the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government, compared to just five during the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) regime.
'Out of the 111 national waterways, 29 are currently operational,' Sonowal said while addressing an event organised under the Jal Marg Vikas Project in Bihar's Patna.
He noted that the emergence of national waterways has benefited several states and helped boost the local economy, benefiting farmers, youth and small traders.
'Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi over the past 11 years, we have witnessed a remarkable transformation in the waterways sector. During the UPA regime, the national waterways were limited to just five, and thanks to the right decision-making of the Prime Minister, we expanded this to 111 national waterways, and 29 of them are operational. This development has benefitted every state, especially farmers, youth and small traders, by strengthening local economies,' Sonowal said.
Speaking about the ministry's efforts to develop Patna as a major waterways hub, the Union Minister said they were taking immediate action on the Bihar government's appeal.
'We are taking immediate action based on the Bihar government's appeal, particularly for Patna to be developed as a waterways hub, which requires vessel repair and green water transport, including electric ferries and water metro,' he said.
He stated that a task force comprising representatives from the Bihar government and the Shipping Ministry would plan the necessary interventions to develop Patna as a waterways hub, which would benefit farmers and students.
Sonowal said it will also help promote river cruises along the 500 km of the Ganga river, which would highlight the culture of Bihar.
'We will form a Task Force comprising representatives from the Ministry of Shipping and the Bihar government to study and plan the necessary interventions, including setting up a vessel repair facility in Patna. This will focus on supporting farmers, students and small traders, promoting river cruises to highlight Bihar's rich history and culture, developing state-of-the-art terminals and infrastructure along the 500 km Ganga river that flows through Bihar,' he added. STATE BJP president Sukanta Majumdar and a London-based doctor, Rajatshubhra Bandyopadhyay, were both detained by the city police amid a roadside conversation in south Kolkata's Bhabanipur area on Friday. Amid the standoff, Bandyopadhyay stepped out of the premises of his home to meet Majumdar on the street. The doctor recently garnered attention for publicly questioning Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during her lecture in London, a video of which had been widely shared online. Their conversation was cut short and both Majumdar and Bandyopadhyay were escorted into police vehicles and taken to the city police headquarters at Lalbazar. 'For what reason have we been detained? I have no clue,' Majumdar told mediapersons as he was led into the van. 'Even a visit to a doctor's house has now become a crime?' a BJP worker questioned. The ruling Trinamool Congress defended the police's actions. 'The BJP is creating provocations. The doctor in question has a track record of inciting controversy. The police acted in accordance with the law to maintain peace in a sensitive locality,' said TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh.

New Delhi: A number of opposition politicians on Friday (June 20) expressed criticism of Union home minister Amit Shah's remarks that soon people would feel shame for speaking in English in India, saying that learning the language is economically useful and alleging that Shah was trying to undermine India's linguistic pluralism. Speaking at a book launch in Delhi, Shah on Thursday said that 'the building of a society where those who speak English in this country will feel shame is not far away now'. A 'foreign language' cannot be used to understand 'our country, its history, its traditions and our religions', said Shah, adding to express hope that despite the difficulty in doing so, Indian society would 'once again' run the country, think, conduct research and make decisions in 'our languages'. However, Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi said English is 'as essential as your mother tongue because it will secure jobs [and] boost confidence', advocating for cherishing Indian languages while teaching English. He also alleged that the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh 'don't want India's poor children to learn English because they don't want you to ask questions, move forward or stand equal'. K. Punjab ranks 2nd after Chandigarh in Performance Grading Index
Jalandhar: Punjab has distinguished itself in the Union ministry of education's recently released Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2.0 for 2022-23 and 2023-24. While bracketed with nine other states, Punjab's scores are second only to topper Chandigarh for both academic years. The state, however, leads the crucial 'learning outcomes' domain, though this data is derived from the National Achievement Survey-2021. Chandigarh holds the second position in this category. The PGI 2.0 evaluates the performance of states and UTs across 70 indicators, categorised into six key domains: learning outcomes, access, infrastructure and facilities, equity, governance process, and teacher education and training. Punjab registered overall scores of 614.1 for 2022-23 and 631.2 for 2023-24. In comparison, Chandigarh's scores were 687.8 in 2022-23, rising to 703.0 in 2023-24. Punjab also outperformed Delhi for both years, with the capital scoring 579.3 in 2022-23 and 623.7 in 2023-24. "For 20 indicators related to the learning outcomes domain and equity domain, data is drawn from NAS 2021," the report mentions. The report further mentions that unlike other domains, relatively easier to comply with, improving learning outcomes takes time and patience. "All other domains support learning outcomes and ultimately converge towards it. In this domain, all the indicators covered are measured via the NAS," the report says. Mixed progress in other domains A comparison of 2022-23 and 2023-24 shows that in the other four domains, Punjab's scores improved in infrastructure and facilities (+13), governance performance (+2), and teachers training and training (+4), but in one year, its score fell in access (-2). Performance of the domain 'access' is measured through enrolment, retention of students, transition of students to the next grade, identification, and mainstreaming of out-of-school children. Punjab was in the 22nd position when the Performance Grading Index started in 2017-18, and in 2018-19, it improved to the 13th position. The state was at the top in the PG Index 2019-20 released in June 2021. In the PG Index 2020-21, Punjab was once again among the top performers and attained level II along with six other states, while Delhi could get in Level III with 29 overall marks less than Punjab. For the third consecutive year in 2021-22, Punjab was at number two in the overall performance with 647.4 scores, while Chandigarh was at the top with 659 scores.
