KCCI President concerned over losses due to ongoing sit-ins near Sukkur
KARACHI: President of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Javed Bilwani has expressed serious concern as the business community is suffering losses of billions of rupees every day due to ongoing sit-ins near Sukkur, road closures which has hit delivery of goods adversely.
There has been a transporter strike for four days, deliveries have stopped due to the closure of national highways for 11 days, and production is being badly affected, said Javed Bilwani. He said that the industrialists are suffering huge losses due to spoilage of goods; export orders are being badly affected.
He said in the meeting of the Council of Common Interest chaired by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, an immediate solution should be found to the issue of ongoing sit-ins near Sukkur, road closures. Not only Karachi but the entire country's business community is very worried due to the closure of the national highway.
Javed Bilwani said, distressed industrialists are talking about moving their businesses out of the country, fed up with the situation. The business community and the country's economy cannot afford further losses in the current situation.
Meanwhile the ongoing blockade of motorways connecting Sindh and Punjab has entered its fourteenth day, as farmers in Sindh protest against Punjab's plans to develop a new irrigation system. Sindhi farmers fear that the project will severely impact the province's water supply, potentially leading to long-term droughts, destruction of crops, and barren agricultural lands.
Industrial leaders, including Ismail Suttar, Founder Salt Manufacturers Association of Pakistan (SMAP) have raised alarms over the escalating situation. 'The disruption of transportation routes is devastating, especially during Pakistan's ongoing economic crisis,' Suttar said. 'Unfortunately, despite the seriousness of the matter, the media has remained silent, and no concrete response has come from government officials.'
Karachi's port operations have been severely affected, with thousands of trucks and Lorries stranded along main transportation routes. This standoff is causing mounting holding and transportation costs for manufacturers, while fears grow that tonnes of edible supplies may spoil, further straining the supply chain.
'Our industries are always the first to suffer during unrest,' Suttar emphasized. 'Sindh and Punjab are industrial powerhouses, heavily reliant on each other for raw materials and market supply. Disrupting their link is not just a regional problem; it's a national economic threat.' Many industries in both provinces have been forced to suspend operations due to the lack of raw material supply. The disruption is hitting both agriculture and manufacturing sectors hard, threatening jobs and leading to significant financial losses.

Awami Tehreek marks death anniversary of Rasool Bux Palijo
The seventh death anniversary of Rasool Bux Palijo, an iconic Sindhi nationalist leader, was marked at a public meeting of the Awami Tehreek (AT), in Thatta on Saturday. Meanwhile, President of the Awami Workers Party (AWP), Advocate Akhtar Hussain, deemed Palijo a genius and revolutionary, while Chairman of the Haqooq-e-Khalq Party, Farooq Tariq, praised Palijo for his struggle in the service of Sindh and its people. During the event, a group of girls clad in red dresses and wearing ajaraks presented a parade, carrying AT's flag.

‘Apna Meter Apni Reading' App unveiled
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif has approved phasing out the role of meter readers in power Distribution Companies (Discos) across the country except KE's service area with initiation of new mechanism 'Apna meter Apni Reading' App, to be launched soon, well informed sources told Business Recorder. Currently, Meter Readers take a snap of consumers' electricity meters which are sent to Discos to Power Information Technology Company (PITC), on the basis of which bills are generated, however, there are numerous complaints of this mechanism as consumers receive inflated bills. In this regard, Prime Minister presided over a meeting on June 17, 2025 wherein issues related to the launching of new scheme and eliminating the menace of overbilling and resolving complains through an automated system came under discussion. Policy for installing more than one electricity meter unchanged, says Power Division amid social media reports According to sources, Prime Minister directed the Power Division to install a Power Smart Mobile App with instructions for use, in both National and four regional languages (Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashtu and Balochi) for easy use / application and understanding of common people. Power Division has been directed to conduct a soft launch of Power Smart Mobile App immediately in order to fix/ streamline any teething issues before the nationwide launch / inauguration by the Prime Minister. The sources said, Prime Minister has given one month to the Power Division to chalk a plan for phasing out the Meter Readers from the power metering system. Power Division in coordination with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is tasked to prepare a comprehensive and engaging media campaign clearly spelling out the objectives of this initiative for the review/ approval of Prime Minister this week. Prime Minister has also directed Power Division that savings on account of reduced administrative charges for meter reading shall be passed on to the consumers . To support the initiative, the Power Information Technology Company has also instructed all Discos to prepare comprehensive media campaigns to inform consumers about the benefits of self-reading. This move aims to eliminate the role of meter readers—many of whom have been implicated in over billing and malpractice. The government has allocated Rs. 316 million for the national media campaign. A detailed Terms of Reference (ToR) has been formulated, outlining the scope, objectives, and methodology for the campaign. Additionally, a clear responsibility matrix has been developed to define the roles and responsibilities of PITC and MEPCO—covering aspects such as media planning, vendor engagement, field activation, monitoring, and reporting. Discos have sought guidance from the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PITC with respect to their due contribution in media campaign. Clarification have also been sought on whether this amount should be deducted from the total payment and borne by individual Discos or whether PITC will facilitate the provision of promotional materials (e.g., boards, standees, banners). Discos have also urged PITC to explore the possibility of securing complimentary airtime for public service announcements through electronic media. Discos highlight the importance of PITC's support in providing the necessary documentation to ensure the success of this public awareness initiative. Furthermore, Discos have stressed the need for thorough testing and validation of applications such as the Power Smart App, Apna Meter Apni Reading, CCMS+, and the Lineman Mobile Solution prior to launch. This is vital to prevent technical issues, ensure a smooth user experience, and build consumer trust. The sources told this correspondent that PITC will ensure high performance, reliability, and a seamless user experience across all platforms during the campaign rollout. Experts push for critical thinking in textbooks
Educationists, scholars, and writers stressed the importance of including lessons in school textbooks that contribute to the moral development, knowledge enhancement, and critical thinking skills of students during the first meeting of the curriculum review committee. The meeting was held on Wednesday to evaluate educational textbooks on the directives of Sindh's Minister for Education Syed Sardar Ali Shah. Attendees also emphasised the need for content to reflect effective language use, social responsibility, collective thinking, and rational perspectives. A proposal was made to develop guiding principles to achieve these goals, noting that Students' Learning Outcomes (SLOs) should be aligned with the text. The meeting was chaired by Sindh Textbook Board Chairman Parvez Ahmed Baloch. After reviewing the 12th-grade Sindhi textbook, experts shared their observations and suggested revisions in line with contemporary educational needs. Writer Jami Chandio noted that improving textbooks is a continuous process that must be sustained. Although he pointed out thematic imbalances in the current 12th-grade Sindhi textbook, he praised its content quality as superior to that of textbooks from other provinces.
