GSFL 2025: Perfect 10 coaches votes for Michael McGlade in Royals narrow win, Darcy Wallinger leads overall

West Australian29-05-2025

Royals midfielder Michael McGlade picked up a perfect 10 in his first polling of the season in the Great Southern Football League coaches votes on Saturday.
McGlade was a unanimous choice as best-on-ground by the two coaches, in the
Lions tense four-point win over Denmark-Walpole at McLean Park
.
The Lions, who have won two games in a row, picked up most of the votes from the game with Declan McNamara and Seb Stanton also polling well.
It was the first votes for McGlade in the 2025 GSFL Coaches Player of the Year Award.
McNamara continued his strong season with seven votes and Stanton received four while Nelson Tulip and Ryan Hick from the Magpies got three each.
Mt Barker gun Darcy Wallinger remains in the outright leader of the award, having picked up more votes in round five of the season.
Wallinger (26 votes) holds a three-vote advantage over his teammate Daniel Patching, while Railways' Ryley Valli and Bulls' Darcy Clarke are just one vote further back.
Patching and Clarke were highly influential
in the Bulls' 38-point win over North Albany at Collingwood Park
.
The pair picked up nine votes each while Kangas midfielder Matt Orzel added five votes to his tally.
Wallinger and Bulls forward Brandon Ugle collected three votes.
Opinions were split in the top-of-the-table clash
as the Tigers won by 60 points over Albany at Retravision Stadium
.
Eight players received votes from the coaches with only Lachie Cale and Logan Stubber featuring for both coaches.
Young Tiger Cale picked up seven votes while Sharks' Bailey Taylor, Stubber and Tigers ruck Shane Braimbridge all got five.
Just six votes separate the top six players on the leaderboard with McNamara (21) and Sharks' Bryce Blaszkow (20) well within striking distance.
Cale joins teammate Jayden Scott on 19 and closely followed by Isaac Baum (18) and Orzel (17).
Each league coach votes 5-4-3-2-1 for players on both sides at the end of every game.

2025 Peter Mulholland Cup live stream: St Gregory's College v Hills Sports High

When St Gregory's College coach Tom Morrison calls bullocking lock Lorima Cosgrave a Mack truck, he means it. He still has the tyre mark down his chest to prove it. Coming head-to-head with his young charge in a local seniors game, Morrison got a first hand insight of what other front rowers across the Peter Mulholland Cup have had to deal with this season. It is a raw power he wants to see again when the proud Campbelltown nursery hosts Hills Sports High on Tuesday. The clash will be exclusively live streamed FREE on KommunityTV. 'He is a Mack truck, once he gets going he is very hard to knock off centre,' Morrison said. 'He played some games in the seniors for Campbelltown City and he scored a good try in the game against us. He made half a break and I came across thinking I could make a cover tackle on him. 'He stomped me into the turf and kept on running to the tryline. 'He is a classy player, but I keep trying to tell him he isn't a dummy-half anymore, he's a middle forward out and out.' The lock is one of several players in an undersized engine room which has continued to punch above its weight in 2025. Front rower Ryan Mackander has been phenomenal for the school, while Jake Gaffney has shown he isn't afraid to hold the gloves up against bigger opposition packs. With two wins from two games, St Gregory's have already punched their ticket to the finals series, putting last year's anguish of missing play-offs by a mere two points on for-and-against. While the result of their contest against Hills Sports High doesn't matter in the grand scheme of the season, for Morrison a win is almost critical. 'We want to play well at our school and put on a show for the school,' he said. 'A lot of teams really enjoy their home field advantage, but we haven't had that in recent years. We have really struggled for results there, so we want to give them something to cheer.' It will be a final run out for Hills Sports High who are not able to qualify for the finals after losing their opening two matches of the season.

Rory McIlroy loses the plot in club-smashing meltdown at US Open

Rory McIlroy's stay in the U.S. Open field nearly lasted just two days. But a birdie on the 18th hole salvaged his second round (2-over) to get him through two days at 6-under and in a tie for 45th at Oakmont Country Club, barely sneaking past the cutline nine years after he missed the cut the last time the major was held at the course. McIlroy's second round turned into a nightmare, too, as on different occasions he chucked his club following a shot on the 12th hole and smashed a tee marker five holes later, the New York Post reports. But the 2025 Masters winner recovered enough to at least have a chance during the final 36 holes, though he trails leader Sam Burns by nine shots. McIlroy, who continued his trend of not addressing reporters following a round, opened his second round with two double bogeys in the first three holes and added another bogey on the 11th. That meant he needed each of his three birdies — on the ninth, the 13th and the decisive 18th — to move on after missing the cut last weekend at the RBC Canadian Open and finishing 47th at the PGA Championship last month. McIlroy's frustration started to surface throughout the round, too, and after his second shot on the 12th hole, he threw his club forward with both hands. You can watch Rory McIlroy lose his cool in the player at the top of the page. Then, after his first shot on the 17th, McIlroy smashed the tee marker shortly after making contact with the ball and watching its initial path. It continued a roller coaster stretch for McIlroy, who broke through at the Masters in April to finally complete the career Grand Slam before mostly struggling during his tournaments since. Rory McIlroy smashes US Open tee marker. Out here breaking stuff like Fred durst — Christopher Powers (@CPowers14) June 13, 2025 'There were points in my career where I didn't know if I would have this nice garment over my shoulders,'' McIlroy told reporters after winning the Masters. 'I certainly didn't make it easy. I was nervous. It was one of the toughest days I've ever had on the golf course.'' For McIlroy to win his first U.S. Open since 2011, which also doubled as his first major title at Congressional Country Club, he'll need to erase a massive deficit on a course that hasn't produced low scores through 36 holes.
