Police shut down bogus initiation school, owner (51) arrested
Mamelodi East police have successfully shut down a bogus initiation school and arrested a 51-year-old man on charges of Contravention of the Customary Initiation Act earlier this week.
Police spokesperson Constable Penelope Khulong said during the arrest last Saturday, 10 boys aged between 11 and 17 were at the school.
She said the initiates were given medical attention and then taken to their families.
Khulong said the arrest came after a parent had complained that her son had been accepted into an initiation school without her completing a consent form.
The complaint was submitted to the Gauteng Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee (PICC) under the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA).
Khulong said a representative of CoGTA received information, and the representatives of the PICC located the school in Mamelodi East.
She said the delegation discovered that the school is not on the official list of approved winter initiation schools in the province as published by the CoGTA.
She said the suspect could not produce the relevant documentation that is required for the school to operate.
'The PICC representatives informed the suspect that the initiation school was operating illegally and took the complainant's son home,' she said.
Khulong said that because of the seriousness of the incident, the PICC representatives reported the matter to Mamelodi East police, who apprehended the suspect on May 21.
She said the rescued initiates were given medical attention.
Mamelodi East police station commander Brigadier Terence Naidoo applauded the collaborative effort between the CoGTA and police.
Naidoo highlighted that this is a period in which different communities around the country observe their customary practices through initiation.
He said as much as culture is sacred and different practices are respected, they should still be conducted within the bounds of the law and also put the well-being of initiates first.
He indicated that the arrest sends a stern warning to all schools that police will stop at nothing to protect lives in the communities.

Metro to address leasing issues to combat hijacking of buildings
Metro to address leasing issues to combat hijacking of buildings Tshwane Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya says the metro is aware of its current leasing challenges following several businesses being closed in a recent by-law operation. On June 17, Moya, accompanied by her Mayoral Committee, the TMPD and supporting partners as well as departments, carried out a by-law operation focused on hijacked buildings in Danville, west of Pretoria. A recurring theme throughout the operation was the holes within the metro's leasing systems, leading to confusion, fraud and mismanagement. 'We will continue to reclaim hijacked city properties. We are aware that the city's leasing system has not worked to benefit the municipality's income-generating capacity, and we are determined to fix this,' Moya said. During the operation, an illegal early childhood development (ECD) centre, operating for 22 years from a city-owned property without a lease, was closed. Across the road was a business park, also city-owned, but none of the businesses had valid leases with the metro. 'Danville, like many areas in the city, has seen residents terrorised by crime, drugs and all manner of lawlessness emanating from properties that are owned by the city or by private entities. The other businesses closed were operating in a privately managed building. These included a gambling business, a butchery that was found selling expired meat and a U-Save operating without a licence,' Moya said. A summary of the operation's results includes: – 8 business premises inspected – 2 Section 56 notices issued for contravention of the Business Act – 4 Section 56 notices issued for contravention of the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectant Act – 1 Contravention notice issued for the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectant Act – 3 Premises found with an illegal electricity connection – 1 Premise found with an illegal water connection – 2 arrests were made for illegal immigration and possession of stolen goods – 3 vehicles impounded – 1 gambling business entered forcefully – 5 businesses closed. We've just shutdown an illegal ECD in Danville. The people living in this place have no lease with the city and have hijacked our property. We found a fake TMPD jacket and SANDF uniform. @CityTshwane — Dr Nasiphi Moya (@nasiphim) June 17, 2025 Do you have more information about the story? Mooiplaats home invasion ends in fatal shooting
A home invasion in Mooiplaats, East of Pretoria, on Friday, June 20, culminated in a shooting between security guards and suspects. According to police spokesperson Johan van Dyk, the events began when a resident heard his dogs barking outside and went to investigate at around 21:30. 'The man was approached by five adult African men armed with pangas,' Van Dyk stated. The men then attacked the victim. 'The suspects also forced entry into the homes of other tenants, attacking them and robbing them of a television and a cell phone. The suspects then fled the scene on foot.' While police did not disclose the extent of the victims' injuries, social media posts suggested they were severe. According to Van Dyk, private security in the area tracked the suspects into nearby bushes. 'Seeing that they were surrounded, the suspects allegedly attacked the security guards with the pangas. The guards retaliated, shooting two of the suspects. One died at the scene, while the other was rushed to a nearby hospital.' Van Dyk confirmed that police are investigating a case of house robbery, murder, possession of stolen property, and possession of house break-in tools.
