Huge update on Netflix smash hit Bridgerton after raunchy carriage scene was snubbed for BAFTA gong

Scottish Sun14-05-2025

SERIES five of Bridgerton is going ahead after Netflix made a huge multi-million pound investment in the show's future.
The greenlight for the new season takes the programme way beyond its current four season batch of shows, the most recent of which was filmed last year.

The Bridgerton story is likely to follow the rough pattern of the novels by Julia Quinn and it's thought the next book which will serve as inspiration is expected to be Elouise Bridgerton's story, To Sir Philip, With Love.
But nothing is a given in Netflix's distinctive version of the story.
A TV insider said: "After introducing the controversial gender swap at the end of series three which saw Michael Stirling switched to Michaela, there is a chance execs could skip ahead to Francesca's story.
"They certainly weren't afraid to dabble with Julia Quinn's timeline by swapping the order of Colin and Benedict's tales."
The good news about continuing the Bridgerton saga comes as series three received a nomination at this week's TV BAFTA awards, with Colin and Penelope's saucy carriage sex scene up for the Memorable Moment gong.
It was beaten by Chris McCausland's moving dance on last year's Strictly Come Dancing.
Series four, which started filming at the end of 2024, will follow the story of the second Bridgerton son, Benedict, played by Luke Thompson.
I exclusively revealed last year how Netflix had invested millions in building a huge new Regency-style set on the edge of London, shifting everything from its traditional home on the stunning streets of Bath.
It's hard to believe it's now been almost five years since the first series dropped on Netflix starring Phoebe Dynevor and Rege Jean Page, before series two came along and helped firmly catapult Jonathan Bailey to Hollywood superstardom.
Last year's third series did similar wonders for the career of its leading lady Nicola Coughlan opposite her character's love interest, Colin Bridgerton, played by Luke Newton.
Netflix were approached for comment.

This Is England director announces first film in 17 years

Shane Meadows, the mastermind behind indie drama This Is England, is set to release his first movie in almost two decades. The filmmaker is most famous for his work on independent projects, which include the cult film This Is England (2006) and its three sequels. The original starred Stephen Graham, Vicky McClure, and Thomas Turgoose, telling the story of a rebellious young boy who joins a group of skinheads. Meadows, 52, hasn't released a film in 17 years but is making a comeback to the silver screen in 2026, it has now been announced. The film in question is titled Chork, described by the man himself as a 'runaway road trip' movie. As if Meadows' touch wasn't enough, the film has also been co-written by his long-time collaborator Jack Thorne, with whom he created the This Is England flicks. Most recently, Thorne co-wrote three-part Netflix series Adolescence, which starred Graham, Erin Doherty, and rising star Owen Cooper, going on to break streaming records. Produced by 42 and Unified alongside Meadows' and Thorne's own production companies and funded partly by BBC Film, Chork will be released into cinemas in the UK and Ireland next year, but an exact date is yet to be confirmed. In conversation with Variety, Meadows said: 'To be returning to film after 17 years, writing alongside 'megadude' Jack Thorne again, and working with so many gifted collaborators has been an absolute privilege.' He added of the project: 'Our story follows two beyond bright, funny as heck, and mischievously ingenious young people on a 'runaway' road trip the length of this glorious isle. 'Safe to say, I'm beyond excited about what we've captured on their journey. 'I'm also hugely grateful to our partners at BBC Film, BFI, Screen Yorkshire, Hoopsa Films and Altitude for their undying trust and support throughout.' Chork was shot along the East coast from Kent through Lincolnshire and up to Scotland, with its plot set in the same location. Characters include 15-year-old Kit and 11-year-old Ani on a trek across the coastline, hoping for big things after leaving their foster home. However, with police on the lookout and a national search implemented, it's anything but a blissful holiday. As such, older child Kit must do what she can to protect Ani and achieve their end goal. Eva Yates, director of BBC Film, said: 'The films of Shane Meadows are at the heart of contemporary British independent cinema, and we are hugely excited to support his return, with a cast of exceptional new actors, his brilliant writing collaborator Jack Thorne, and an anarchic story of love, redemption, and the untapped and profound potential of youth.' Meanwhile, giving fans a taste of what to expect, Louise Ortega, senior production and development executive at the BFI, described Chork as a 'typically funny, urgent, and heartfelt state of the nation piece'. She also praised Meadows, Thorne, and their 'skilled crew of collaborators' for 'weaving [in] irreverent magic which asks timely questions'. More Trending 'We can't wait for their film to be out in the world, inspiring a new generation.' As well as This Is England, Meadows' other films include Small Time (1996), Twenty Four Seven (1997), A Room for Romeo Brass (1999), and Once Upon a Time in the Midlands (2002). He's also responsible for Dead Man's Shoes (2004), Somers Town (2006), Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee (2009), and the latest The Stone Roses: Made of Stone (2013). Got a story? Netflix fans issue 'brutal' warning about 'fantastic' new period drama

Netflix fans have been 'blown away' by one very popular period drama but viewers have warned it is not for the faint hearted. Following the popularity of historical dramas such as Bridgerton and The Buccaneers, viewers are keen for more period shows and American Primeval may be exactly what fans may need to fill that void. The Western miniseries dropped on Netflix in January this year, starring Friday Night Lights' Taylor Kitsch and GLOW actress Betty Gilpin. American Primeval is set against the backdrop of the Utah War in 1857, and tells the story of a mum and her son travelling across the brutal landscape that strips them of their freedom and pushes them towards savagery in the American West. Mum Sara, portrayed by Betty, is on the run with her son Devin, trying to escape their past life where she is wanted for the murder of her affluent husband, and is hoping to reunite her son with his father. ‌ The period drama is a blend of reality and fiction, with some characters inspired by real individuals who were all struggling to survive. The climatic episode, which depicts Mormon soldiers disguised as Natives attacking a group of pioneers, was based off a real event, The Mountain Meadows Massacre. ‌ The official synopsis reads: "Up is down, pain is everywhere, and innocence and tranquillity are losing the battle to hatred and fear. "Peace is the shrinking minority, and very few possess grace - even fewer know compassion. There's no safe haven in these wild lands, and only one goal matters: survival." Reddit users have been exchanging period drama recommendations and American Primeval appears to be a popular topic of conversation on the forum, the Express reports. One person suggested: "American Primeval - early America period piece, limited series, absolutely engrossing." ‌ Another echoed this sentiment with high praise, adding: "Based on an obscure true story... Gritty, with ultra-kinetic violence." However, several others have issued a warning about how "brutal" the series is. A Netflix fan who was left captivated by the show, shared: "Recently watched this on Netflix and it blew me away. Beautiful cinematography and a gritty and violent take on the wild west, this is just fantastic." ‌ Another enthusiastic viewer exclaimed: "This show was f***ing amazing," while someone else revealed their newfound fascination: "Love love love. For the first time we are seeing the story of the Mormons. Had no idea." The general consensus appeared to be hugely positive with remarks such as "Brutal show. Amazing," adding to the acclaim. Critics and audiences alike have all given American Primeval a thumbs up with a strong 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes,. ‌ The positive feedback continued as someone said: "Much, much better than I was expecting. Saw all episodes straight through. Rather brutal." Another penned: "The limited series was excellent. I'm not a big fan of the genre but this series kept me engaged the entire way. It is well written and well cast." Stunning cinematography and first class acting." In light of the show's success, the creators Peter Berg and Mark L Smith, have hinted at the possibility of expanding the universe with a prequel series. Berg revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter: "We're talking about it right now. "That's the way we'd go if we do it. It would be a real big time jump to keep that crew going, but the idea of looking backwards is really interesting to me."

Netflix series could be saved six years on from axing

A legendary Netflix series could be saved as the lead star gave a promising update about a streaming comeback after meeting with the director - a full six years on from its controversial axing Psychological crime thriller Mindhunter hit the streaming service back in 2017 and went on to air 19 episodes across two seasons, before wrapping up in 2019. 'In the late 1970s two FBI agents expand criminal science by delving into the psychology of murder and getting uneasily close to all-too-real monsters,' the Netflix synopsis reads. The popular programme, created by Joe Penhall, stars the likes of Jonathan Groff, 40, Holt McCallany, 61, Anna Torv, 46, and Hannah Gross, 34. In a recent chat with CBR , Holt - who played Bill Tench in the series - has teased that it could indeed be making a return. He said: 'So look, you know, I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it's just a chance. 'I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts.' He added: 'And I felt very fortunate and privileged to have gotten to do that show at all. 'So I think that in terms of dates and logistics, it could all be worked out, but it has to do, you know, with David really having the time and the inclination and being happy, you know, with the material. 'And, you know, that's a big question mark.' It comes after Netflix fans were left furious back in April after it was claimed that Mindhunter wouldn't see another season because 'it's too expensive'. In an interview with Le Journal du Dimanche back in 2023, David previously asserted that there wouldn't be another season of the beloved show. He said: 'I'm very proud of the first two seasons. 'But it's a particularly expensive show, and in Netflix's eyes, we didn't attract a large enough audience to justify such an investment. 'I don't blame them; they took risks to launch the series, gave me the means to do what I dreamed of with Mank, and they allowed me to venture down new paths with The Killer. 'It's a chance to be able to work with people capable of daring. 'The day our desires are no longer the same, we will have to be honest about parting ways.' David's quote resurfaced on X recently and left some fans disappointed by the news. One commented: 'Y'all filmed in two rooms and a parking lot, where did the budget go.' 'One of the best series.' 'Sell it to Apple TV please I love that show.' 'This is why I stopped watching shows. All of them end up getting cancelled because they become too expensive.' 'Such a shame too, because it was one of the better things to come out of Netflix for a long while.' ''Didn't attract an audience' when it's literally one of the best Netflix show to have ever been made.' 'I knew this, I actually let go of my Netflix subscription when I realised it wasn't coming back. [Expletive] me off. One of the better crime shows I've watched.' Mindhunter is available to stream on Netflix now.
