A young man has died after falling from an electric scooter in regional Queensland.
The crash tragic accident happened in the town of Mareeba, near Cairns, on Tuesday night.
A police spokeswoman told NewsWire, as of late Wednesday morning, the deceased male was yet to be identified.
Local media reports it is a teenager who has died.
The spokeswoman said the police believe there were no other vehicles involved in the crash.
The forensic crash unit is investigating.
The tragic incident is the latest electric scooter crash to rock the country and follows the release of a report last week from doctors and researchers in Queensland highlighting the 'significant risk' to children from e-scooters.
The report, published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health, analysed 176 child e-scooter injury cases that presented to Sunshine Coast University Hospital between January 2023 and December 2024.
The research found 71 per cent of cases were male, falls accounted for 78 per cent of crashes, while 13 per cent involved motor vehicles.
Helmet noncompliance was documented in 42 per cent of the presentations, 12 per cent involved doubling, and 36 per cent exceeded the 25km/h speed limit.
Further, fractures occurred in 37 per cent of cases, 18 per cent required computerised tomography scans and 11 per cent sustained life-threatening or potentially life-threatening injuries.

Council Watch head fights intervention order bid from Victorian mayor

The head of a local government advocacy organisation is in court this week for an intervention order hearing over allegations of harassment. An inner-city Melbourne mayor is seeking a protection order against Dean Hurlston, who runs the Council Watch organisation, over allegations of ongoing harassment. Stonnington Mayor Melina Sehr told a civil contest hearing in the Melbourne Magistrates Court she had endured six years of targeted harassment from Mr Hurlston. In April, Cr Sehr was granted an interim order against Mr Hurlston. She is now seeking a full personal safety intervention order (PSIO). A PSIO protects an individual from unwanted behaviour, including physical and mental harm. An interim order can be made until an application for a final order is determined. Mr Hurlston is not facing criminal charges and denies he is a safety threat to Cr Sehr. Giving evidence on Monday, Cr Sehr referred to a 486-page document containing social media posts, comments, texts, and emails from Mr Hurlston, Council Watch, and other users engaging with the content that she told the court had humiliated, harassed, mocked and intimidated her. Cr Sehr alleged Mr Hurlston's "unrelenting stream of mockery, belittlement and abuse" began in 2019, after Stonnington council's decision to build a series of netball courts near his home. She told the court that by 2022, 85 per cent of all posts on the Council Watch and Stonnington Council Watch pages referred to her. The hearing, which is expected to go for four days, continues.

Inside the 'delicate' operation to hoist Mike Lynch's superyacht back up to the surface

The sunken wreck of a superyacht has been raised from Sicilian waters as authorities investigate an accident that killed seven people, including UK tech magnate Mike Lynch. The British-flagged luxury yacht has been underwater since it sunk off the coast of Sicily in August. But over the weekend, it was raised from the depths. The white top and blue hull of the 56-metre-long Bayesian, covered with algae and mud, was visibly clear of the sea in a holding area of a yellow floating crane barge off the Sicilian port of Porticello. Crane ships were tasked with bringing the yacht back up to the surface. But given the yacht weighed nearly 430 tonnes and was about 50 metres below the water, it was always going to take time to resurface the vessel. It was slowly raised from the seabed over three days. Before raising the yacht, the recovery crew cut off its 72m mast on Tuesday. It had to be detached to allow the hull to be brought to a nearly upright position that would allow the craft to be raised. TMC Maritime, the company conducting the recovery, said this move sped up the operation by about a week. The recovery crew used a remote-controlled cutting tool to shear off the mast, which was left on the seabed for future removal. Steel lifting straps were secured under the keel. When conditions were right, a steel wire lifting system began raising the vessel out of the water. As the superyacht was raised, seawater was pumped out of the hull. TMC described the operation as a "delicate lifting procedure". In photos of the operation, Bayesian's upper decks appeared badly damaged while the blue hull was encrusted with mud. Recovery crews finalised the complex operation to lift it out of the water on Sunday. Keeping the vessel completely out of the water, the barge moved towards the Sicilian port of Termini Imerese — about 20 kilometres away from Porticello by land. The barge docked in Termini Imerese in the early afternoon. From there, it's expected to be transported and settled in a specially built steel cradle on Monday, local time. It'll be made available for investigators for further examinations to help determine the cause of the sinking. Marine salvage experts began the operation to recover the superyacht in early May. However, the operation was temporarily halted after a diver's death a few days later. Italian news agencies reported the diver was a 39-year-old Dutch national who worked for the Dutch specialist salvage company Hebo Maritiemservice. In early June, salvage teams recovered 17 pieces of suspected Bayesian debris from the sea floor identified using a remote-controlled submersible. They were taken to shore in Termini Imerese as part of the investigation. The yacht sank off Porticello, near Palermo, during a violent storm on August 19. Lynch died along five of his guests and one crew member. Fifteen people survived, including the captain and the remaining crew members. Among the dead were Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Mr Lynch's lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda, banker Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy, and onboard chef Recaldo Thomas. Mr Thomas's body was found near the wreck hours after the disaster. The bodies of the remaining dead were recovered by divers in the days following the sinking. Mr Lynch had been treating friends to a cruise to celebrate his acquittal on fraud charges two months earlier in the US. He founded a search engine called Autonomy in 1996, which he ending up selling to Hewlett-Packard for $US11 billion in 2011. However, the deal quickly turned sour after he was accused of forging the software's financial records to make the sale. The British tycoon eventually walked free of the criminal charges in June 2024. Italian authorities are conducting a full criminal investigation. British investigators said in an interim report issued last month that the yacht was knocked over by "extreme wind" and couldn't recover. The report said the crew of the Bayesian had chosen the site where it sank as shelter from forecast thunderstorms. Wind speeds exceeded 70 knots at the time of the sinking and "violently" knocked the vessel over to a 90-degree angle in under 15 seconds. ABC with Wires

Police called after creepy child bride Disneyland ‘wedding'

A British man has been arrested after he allegedly attempted to stage a fake wedding to a nine-year-old girl at Disneyland Paris. The 22-year-old man was reportedly acting as the 'groom' in the bizarre ceremony, which took place on Saturday morning in front of the famous Sleeping Beauty castle, according to The Sunday Times. Following his arrest, he told police that the spectacle was intended as a video for social media. Disneyland Paris staff became suspicious and alerted authorities after noticing the bride appeared alarmingly young. The presence of her family and a large number of guests also raised concerns. It was later revealed that many of the 'wedding guests' were hired actors who had been transported to the park and given minimal information about the nature of the event. When Seine-et-Marne Police arrived on the scene, they found the child dressed in a bridal dress and wearing four-inch heels that had been taped to her feet. The 'groom' was taken into custody, along with the girl's mother, a 41-year-old Ukrainian woman. Alexandre Verney, Assistant Prosecutor for the Seine-et-Marne region, confirmed that the young girl underwent a medical examination and was found to be unharmed. Mr Verney also confirmed that two Latvian nationals, aged 24 and 55, were arrested in connection with the strange incident. According to local reports, the 55-year-old Latvian told authorities he had been paid €12,000 (AU$21,550) to play the role of the bride's father but only learned the girl's age shortly before the event. The child's mother and the 55-year-old have since been released from police custody, while the British man and 24-year-old Latvian remain detained on suspicion of financial fraud. Authorities believe that Disneyland Paris was misled about the nature of the event, with the organiser assuming the identity of a Latvian national and using fake documents to secure permission to hold a private event at the park. A video obtained by a French news outlet reportedly shows around 100 guests seated as a violin trio performed in front of a flower-adorned stage. One source who claims to have been a wedding guest told a French newspaper that everyone was 'stunned' by what had unfolded. 'We all thought we were going to attend a one expected it,' she said. 'Disneyland did things very well. They cancelled everything as soon as they realised the bride was a child. We were shocked to see that.' A criminal investigation is now underway.
