Trawlerman nets biggest staying prize of them all

Second to Kyprios 12 months ago, the Godolphin-owned seven-year-old took full advantage of the dual winner's retirement under an excellently-judged ride from William Buick.
Illinois, who had stepped into Kyprios' shoes for Aidan O'Brien, was well placed if good enough, but inside the final furlong Trawlerman (85-40 favourite) began to pull away and ran out an impressive seven-length winner. Dubai Future was third for Saeed bin Suroor in the Godolphin colours.

Buick said: 'It's an extreme distance, two and a half miles, so you need an extraordinary horse with an extraordinary set of skills.
'He's got that lung capacity and stamina. He got in a great rhythm – it's a tough thing to do, be in front for two and a half miles like that, but he's so genuine.
'I knew he would stay, which is a big help. It's taken me a long time to win this – I knew he was the right horse, I just hoped I would get it right on him.'
John Gosden spoke of his relief after what felt like a long final furlong for the Clarehaven handler.
He said: 'I didn't enjoy it (final furlong) because anything can happen, you never know until they cross the line. He's part of the furniture you know. It's absolutely amazing. He's the most grand, lovely horse he really is. The other horse, Sweet William (fourth), they're great old friends.'
Trawlerman set a new course record and Gosden praised Buick's ride, repeating the tactics he employed to such good effect when also winning at Sandown last time out.
'We ran him in the Henry II at Sandown and William got it spot on,' said Gosden.
'He went what they call in America 'wire to wire', that was two miles around Sandown.
'He's an out-and-out galloper and he rode him beautifully, judged it perfectly – not an easy thing to do over two and a half miles.
'The only way we were going to win was to just say, 'if you're going to beat me, you're going to know you've been in a race, as you're going to have to go two and a half miles at a proper gallop'.'
Gosden already has a title defence on his mind and given Trawlerman will be eight next year, he is eager to measure the gelding's efforts ahead of that long-range target.
He added: 'I think he should be aimed at coming back next year, and he shouldn't be over-raced at all in between time. Don't be surprised if you don't see him again until the Henry II next year. That could be a reality.
'I'll discuss it with Sheikh Mohammed, but he doesn't need to be going to all these races. He might come back here in the autumn (for the Long Distance Cup on Champions Day), he's won that, we might go for that, and then put him away.'

Star Sports described it as 'a black, black day' which started with the shortest priced favourite of the week, Charles Darwin, landing the first race A Royal Ascot bookie lost £367,000 on Ladies Day after favourites won five of the seven races. The five day royal meeting is the biggest betting event of the year in Flat racing when many high rollers are present to place large bets with the bookmakers in the betting ring. Star Sports, which has two pitches on the site, has a reputation for accepting bets of up to six figures. But once the day started with the odds-on Aidan O'Brien-trained Charles Darwin capturing the first race, there was little respite thereafter. ‌ Kaan Hughes, head of Star Sports on course, said: 'It's a painful start after yesterday was good. We've given it all back and more in the first, a bad, bad result. ‌ 'All the faces were on and they knew. We've done six figures in the first and we done the each way money in the third. Between the two firms we are on the back foot early. It's only going to get worse at this stage.' More detail was shared on Simon Nott's Star Sports blog which related that one punter placed a £40,000 bet to win £50,000 on Charles Darwin with Star Sports and in the next the firm paid out one of £20,000 staked on second race winner Merchant, collecting £70,000. The pitch lost nearly £60,000 on the race. The biggest bet taken on the Gold Cup was one of £42,500 on Trawlerman, who made all the running to take the feature prize. In the sixth race Trinity College was the fourth favourite to win with Nott commenting: 'It appeared the big punters wanted to finish Star Sports off on the day, not just the meeting.' In the final race, won by another favourite Never So Brave, the firm had taken a bet of £10,000 which earned them £50,000. ‌ 'The Tatts book lost £15,849 but the rail won £2,781 on the race and copped £15,276 on the day, the Tatts pitch fared less well, losing £367,990. The results were bad for bookmakers betting off course as well and William Hill spokesperson Lee Phelps said: 'When five winning favourites go in on a Royal Ascot card, us bookies are always going to be licking our wounds. 'Charles Darwin, Merchant, Trawlerman, Trinity College and Never So Brave's wins have seen the punters begin to claw back after the first two days saw us well clear, but it's still all to play for in the final two days. 'Friday's business looks to be defined by the Coronation Stakes and the Commonwealth Cup. If we can get either Falakeyah or Zarigana beat in the Coronation, that'll be a real touch, and the same can be said for Shadow Of Light in the Commonwealth Cup.'

Royal Ascot Day 4 betting tips The 2025 Royal Ascot festival continues with day four on Friday, 20 June, with two Group 1 contests headlining the day's action. The Commonwealth Cup and Coronation Stakes are the main races of the day, supported by the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes and the opening race of the day, the Group 3 Albany Stakes. As the odds suggest, he should have too much class for his opponents on Friday afternoon, so we've gone with Shadow of Light to win the Commonwealth Cup at 7/4 with various Royal Ascot betting sites. Coronation Stakes prediction This is another race that now has a clear favourite due to a withdrawal, with Irish 1000 Guineas winner Lake Victoria having dropped out while being the odds-on favourite. That leaves Zarigana as the favourite on betting sites for the second Group 1 contest of the day, with the three-year-old having impressed on five home runs in France since debuting at Chantilly in July 2024. She has two wins in 2025, including the Group 1 French 1000 Guineas at Longchamp last month, and has proven to be versatile on different ground while building on solid performances from last season. Though this will be her first race outside of France, she'll set off as cleat favourite on Friday. Falakeyah is second in the running in the Royal Ascot odds having performed well on the way to a win in the Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket, but this is another one where the favourite might have little competition.
