PARTLY FACETIOUS: ‘We can no longer suffer accountants gladly'

'Just wondering about war strategies.'
'Yes, daily exchange of fire across our borders with India after the Pahalgam attack…'
'I am hoping that better sense will prevail…..'
'Oh, were you referring to the terror attacks on our border with Afghanistan, I mean don't our intelligence agencies reckon India has a hand in…'
'Right but that's not what I was referring to when I mentioned war strategies…..for example Israel's war strategy is to assassinate the leadership, they killed the Hezbollah leader, they killed the Hamas leadership — the one Israel was engaged in dialogue with and the commander in Gaza, there is also talk of Israel considering decapitating the Iranian leadership before launching an attack and….'
'Ah I see so are you asking if India is considering a similar strategy. If you recall, Ziaul Haq and Benazir Bhutto were both assassinated – the former cost the taxpayers a rather expensive plane and Benazir Bhutto…'
'Don't be facetious.'
'No, no, I am merely saying that Ziaul Haq's assassination…'
'Shut up right now. And for your information, I don't think there is irrefutable proof that the two assassinations were carried out by enemy forces – I mean the jury is still out on that and…'
'We don't have a jury system, thank you. We have a judiciary in sufficient numbers courtesy the twenty-sixth amendment, and the Law Minister is currently engaged in ironing out a minor irritant relating to judges' transfers and seniority…'
'What do you think of us adopting a jury system?'
'Not workable here at all.'
'How come, it is working in other parts of the world.'
'Jury system is based on the peers of the accused passing judgment now I ask you does The Man Who Must Remain Nameless and Faceless have any peers, does The Third Wife, a spiritual guide no less, have any peers and…'
'Wait, wouldn't Wife Number one…'
'She is no longer someone whose guidance he listens to.'
'Right OK, so the jury system is out, and judges are in, in great numbers – one question, is anyone keeping a tab on how many pending cases today compared to before the judiciary strength was increased…and…'
'We are not good with numbers, my friend.'
'We need an accountant…'
'We can no longer suffer accountants gladly.'
'The expression is suffer fools…'
'You are obtuse.'

US stealth bombers head over Pacific as Trump mulls Iran strikes

WASHINGTON: US stealth bombers were flying Saturday across the Pacific Ocean, according to tracking data and media reports, fueling speculation over their intended mission as President Donald Trump considers joining Israel's attack on Iranian nuclear sites. Multiple B-2 bomber aircraft left a base in the central United States overnight and were later tracked flying off the California coast along with aerial refueling jets, The New York Times and specialist plane tracking sites reported. The B-2 is capable of carrying America's heaviest payloads, including the bunker-busting GBU-57, a 30,000-pound (13,607 kg) warhead capable of penetrating 200 feet (61 meters) underground before exploding. Iran, Israel launch new attacks after Tehran rules out nuclear talks Such a bomb, which Israel is not known to possess, is the only weapon capable of destroying Iran's deeply buried nuclear facilities. When reached for comment, the Pentagon referred AFP to the White House, which did not immediately respond. Trump, who rarely spends weekends in Washington, is due to return to the White House on Saturday evening to hold an unspecified "National Security Meeting." The president said Friday that Iran had a "maximum" of two weeks to avoid possible US air strikes, indicating he could take a decision before the fortnight deadline he had announced a day earlier.

OGRA directs oil companies to maintain 20-day reserves amid Iran-Israel conflict

Government officials and PSO have voiced concern over 'unfair competition' and the potential threat to G2G fuel supply deals. Photo: AFP Listen to article The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has directed all Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to maintain fuel reserves to ensure uninterrupted supply across the country amid evolving market conditions following the Iran-Israel conflict. In a statement issued on Saturday, OGRA spokesperson Imran Ghaznavi said all OMCs have been instructed to maintain the mandatory 20-day fuel reserves as required under their licensing terms. "OGRA further emphasises that companies must fully comply with these conditions to ensure smooth fuel supply nationwide," the statement said. Ghaznavi added that Pakistan currently has sufficient petroleum reserves to meet domestic demand. "There are adequate petroleum stocks in the country to meet present consumption levels. OGRA is actively monitoring the situation and ensuring strict oversight to uphold national energy security," he said. He further noted that proactive steps are being taken to address future energy requirements and respond to shifting market dynamics. "OGRA remains committed to ensuring uninterrupted energy supply and strengthening national energy security," Ghaznavi affirmed. Iran–Israel Conflict The recent conflict between Iran and Israel has escalated into the most intense direct confrontation in their history, as both countries exchange large-scale strikes. Israel launched 'Operation Rising Lion' with a surprise attack on June 13, targeting Iranian military leadership, nuclear facilities, and ballistic missile production sites. The operation resulted in the deaths of hundreds, including top Iranian commanders and nuclear scientists. Macron says Europeans to ‘accelerate negotiations' with Iran

PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron said on Saturday that France and its European partners would ramp up talks with Iran following more than a week of hostilities between the Islamic republic and Israel. On Friday, British, French, German and EU top diplomats held talks in Geneva with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi a week after Israel started its bombardment. They urged Iran to revive diplomatic efforts with the United States to find a solution in the standoff over its nuclear programme, but Tehran warned it could only consider diplomacy once Israel halted its bombardment. On Saturday, Macron said talks will be stepped up in an effort to avoid greater conflict. Iran, Israel launch new attacks after Tehran rules out nuclear talks 'I am convinced that a path exists to end war and avoid even greater dangers,' Macron said in English on X after holding phone talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. 'To achieve this, we will accelerate the negotiations led by France and its European partners with Iran.' Macron reiterated that 'Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons.' 'It is up to Iran to provide full guarantees that its intentions are peaceful,' he added. He once again demanded that Iran must release French nationals Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris, who have been held since May 2022 on espionage charges their families reject. 'Their inhumane detention is unjust,' Macron said. 'I expect them to return to France.'
