Shock details emerge about an Aussie man's alleged cocaine 'dead drop' worth $9.7million

From a parked van near an inner-city reserve, a man retrieves a sports bag he allegedly believes contains cocaine worth millions.
It's called a 'dead drop' - with a long history of use in espionage - but unfortunately for the guy who came to collect the package on Friday in Sydney, he was on the wrong side of the intelligence gathering.
Australian Federal Police had already replaced the 30kg of wrapped cocaine bricks inside the bag.
The amount of drugs had a potential street value of almost $9.7million and would have equated to about 150,000 street level deals, the force said.
Officers then arrested their suspect at the end of a foot chase following his return with the goods to the city's salubrious eastern suburbs.
Police said they seized the fake cocaine along with encrypted devices and anabolic steroids from his Double Bay home and a nearby unit.
Officers were operating undercover, wearing bright orange hi-vis work wear to appear to be tradies, The Daily Telegraph reported.
Jonathan Lindsay Fagan, 40, has swapped the prestige postcode for a jail cell after declining to apply for bail in Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.
He has been charged with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of unlawfully imported border controlled drugs, which can carry a lifetime prison sentence.
The case returns to court on Tuesday.
The arrest came after a three-month AFP investigation into an alleged transnational drug trafficking syndicate operating in Australia.
The inquiry had disrupted the group's operations, Detective Superintendent Morgen Blunden said.
'This result should serve as a serious warning to potential drug traffickers in Australia - don't get comfortable - because the AFP is constantly working to target and disrupt your criminal operations and bring you to justice.'
Friday's operation came a day after another man flew in to Sydney from Dubai allegedly carrying more than 10kg of cocaine in a suitcase.

Alexandre Verney, assistant prosecutor for the Seine-et-Marne département, said: 'Four people were arrested and questioned: the groom, who was believed to be the organiser of the event and is presumed to be British and aged 22; the mother of the child, a 41-year-old Ukrainian woman; and two Latvian nationals aged 55 and 24. 'It wasn't a wedding but a staged wedding that was to be filmed with a hundred extras. They privatised Disneyland, claiming that it was a real marriage.' The mother and the older Latvian were released after a medical examination of the girl showed no mistreatment or constraint. The Briton and the other Latvian were held for questioning over possible money laundering and fraud offences, the prosecutor's office said. Disney thanked its staff for their action in halting the event. A witness told Le Parisien: 'We were not told at any time that it was about a film shoot. We all thought we were going to part of a wedding. Everyone was stunned. No one expected this. Disneyland does things very well. They immediately cancelled when they understood that the bride was a kid. We were sickened by that.' The extras said they had been driven from central Paris on buses at 5am and given pink bracelets with the names of the 'bride and groom' printed on them. One of the extras, named Yeleen, who went to the ceremony with her daughter, said: 'I saw a little girl dressed in white. I saw her hair prepared with curls and a lady picking her up in her arms. At that moment, I was shocked. I realised when I saw the child. It was atrocious.'

Iran used drug traffickers to stoke trouble in France, says minister

PARIS, June 22 (Reuters) - France has evidence that Iran has used intermediaries in the past to hire drug traffickers to carry out activities in France on its behalf and could do so again, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said on Sunday. France is on heightened alert following U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities overnight. "Iran uses proxies that are often linked to drug traffickers. They get a contract and don't even know that the contract is linked to the Iranian regime," Retailleau told LCI television. "But that's the modality used by Iran on (our)national territory." Retailleau did not say what activities had been carried out in France and gave no specific evidence. Iran's embassy was not immediately available for comment. "It's very simple. These are contracts through intermediaries that don't link back to the regime," Retailleau said. Highlighting the heightened security threat, Retailleau also referred to a foiled plot in July 2018 to blow up an opposition rally near Paris where several Iranians were arrested after a joint Franco-German-Belgian operation. The plot was led by Vienna-based Iranian diplomat Assadolah Assadi and three others, according to court documents. Assadi, who French officials said was running an Iranian state intelligence network and was acting on orders from Tehran, was sentenced in Belgium to a 20-year prison term in 2021. He was exchanged in May 2023 for four Europeans held in Iran. Iran has repeatedly denied carrying out destabilising activities in Europe.

Mystery surrounds death of woman who vanished from her home: 'She was the gentlest, kindest little lady'

The death of woman who vanished from her Melbourne home before turning up a week later in a hospital with severe injuries has sparked a homicide investigation. Julia Neira, 63, was reported missing by a neighbour on June 14 after she left her home at Noble Park, in Melbourne 's southeast, a few days earlier and failed to return. The Chilean national who emigrated to Australia had been seen talking with a man shortly before leaving the property. Two days after police were notified she was missing, they located Ms Neira in Dandenong Hospital with injuries described by police as 'consistent with being seriously assaulted.' She died from her injuries on Friday evening. Homicide Squad detectives are investigating her death, which is being treated as suspicious. Police confirmed they spoke with a 62-year-old Endeavour Hills man in relation to the incident. He has been released without charge pending further enquiries. Police believe Ms Neira and the man were known to each other. Officers confirmed they were able to speak with Ms Neira in hospital before her death. 'At this time, the exact circumstances surrounding the incident which led to her being injured are still being determined,' a police spokesperson said. Officers have been canvassing the area and collecting CCTV footage from around her Marna Court address from June 7 to June 14. Ms Neira's relatives live in Chile, and neighbours said the Marna Court community had become like the woman's second family. Ms Neira had lived in the area for six years. One neighbour told the Herald Sun the 63-year-old was an 'angel.' Another said Ms Neira was always ready for a cup of tea and a talk and that she was a loyal friend. 'She was the softest, gentlest, kindest little lady,' friend, Suzanne, told Nine News. 'I didn't sleep all night, I think Julia where are you, what's happened to you,' another neighbour, Zorca, said. 'I miss her so much.' Police are tracking down Ms Neira's next of kin overseas to notify them. Detectives said they were keen to speak to anyone who may have further information about the circumstances leading up to Ms Neira's death.
