Duo in court after woman dies, man critically injured in Standerton attack
Two women are appearing in the Standerton Magistrate's Court today in connection with murder and attempted murder.
Ridge Times reports that, according to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Jabu Ndubane, the duo cornered a man and woman in Sakhile, accusing them of stealing R1 000 at a recent party they attended.
The victims were forced to one of the assailant's homes, allegedly by the two women, where they were then assaulted with an electric cable cord, a shovel and a knife.
Ndubane says when the attackers realised the woman was unconscious, they took her to a nearby clinic where she was declared dead.
The deceased had fatal stab wounds on her back and several bruises on her body.
According to Ndubane, her injuries were so severe that her head was swollen. The man is currently in hospital. Although stable for now, his condition remains critical.

Two people were held for questioning in the case, which initially caused alarm when staff alerted police on Saturday that it could have concerned an illegal child marriage. But investigators now believe that the so-called "marriage" was staged, with the girl's mother reportedly saying that she wanted her to feel like a Disney "princess" for the day. "The event turned out to be a staged event, with the guests themselves extras" invited to be part of the stunt, deputy prosecutor Alexandre Verney said. "So it wasn't a wedding, but a staged wedding filmed with around a hundred extras. They hired Disneyland Paris, pretending it was a real wedding," he told AFP. Four people were arrested and taken into custody, and the questioning of two of them -- suspected of fraud and money laundering -- was extended on Saturday evening. The investigations, including a medical examination of the nine-year-old girl, a Ukrainian national, found that "she had not been subjected to any violence or coercive acts," the prosecutor's office said. According to the Le Parisien daily, which first reported the incident, a man had several weeks previously hired the Disneyland Paris complex for a sum of 130,000 euros ($150,000) for several hours before it opened to the public. Staff were astonished when the nine-year-old appeared wearing high heels on Saturday morning, barely able to stand in the elaborate footwear, and they alerted the authorities, it said. The paper said the man who organised the event had submitted false documents concerning his identity and Disneyland filed a complaint. Hundreds of extras were bussed in to play the part of the guests, it said, while the girl's mother told investigators she wanted to organise a "day worthy of a princess" for her daughter. AFP

Manhunt underway for suspects who fatally shot a man
The police have launched a manhunt for suspects who fatally wounded a man and injured another one at Riba-Cross, Madiseng, on Friday, 20 June 2025. The two wounded suspects were able to make their way to the hospital, but one sustained his injuries and died. The police were immediately summoned to the hospital for investigations. Initial investigations revealed that the victim was driving with another male in a taxi association vehicle when they were attacked and shot by unknown people. The motive behind the shooting is unknown at the moment and investigations are taking place. The police urge anyone who has information or hears about the suspects to contact investigating officer Lieutenant Colonel Lesetja Mogotlane on 082 451 7232, the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or the nearest police station or the MySAPS App. The Ehlanzeni District's Acornhoek Cluster Crime Prevention Team arrested a 41-year-old suspect for being in possession of suspected stolen property in connection with a truck hijacking incident that occurred in Bushbuckridge on 20 June 2025. According to reports, the driver of the truck was on his way to deliver tyres to Bushbuckridge Tyre Mart when the suspect approached and pointed a gun at him. The suspect forcefully entered the truck and forced the driver to drive towards a scrap yard along the R40, where he was then directed to a different location where the suspect offloaded 36 tyres from the truck. After the incident, the driver was told to leave and he subsequently drove to the nearest police station to open a case. The following day, the police received a tip-off from Netstar Tracking Company regarding the possible location of the tyres. 'The team operationalised the information, which led them to a residence in Maribishing, outside Bushbuckridge. Upon arrival, officers noticed a pile of tyres stacked near the garage.' 'A man at the scene, who claimed ownership of the tyres, stated that they had been delivered to him by unidentified individuals,' the police statement read. Investigations led to the arrest of for possession of suspected stolen property and has also been linked to the truck hijacking case. A total of 26 tyres, valued at R67,140.00, were recovered. The suspect is expected to appear before the Bushbuckridge Magistrate's Court on Monday, 23 June 2025. Manganese carrier truck driver held for allegedly trying to bribe Eastern Cape traffic officer
The driver of a manganese carrier truck was pulled off on the N10 in the Eastern Cape just outside Cookhouse on Friday, after he allegedly offered a traffic officer a bribe when she pulled him over for driving an unroadworthy vehicle. A young Eastern Cape traffic officer refused an alleged bribe of R1,500 by a manganese truck driver after she pulled the vehicle off the road for being in a dangerous condition. Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said the woman who arrested the driver was a young traffic officer recruited only in December last year. He said the truck, which was registered in the Northern Cape, was in a dangerous condition. Binqose confirmed that the truck was a manganese carrier. 'It was deemed a moving hazard with various defects ranging from a loose steering rack, loose wiring in the cabin and tyres that were [in poor] condition,' he said. He said the driver had offered the officer a R1,500 bribe, which she refused. She then proceeded to arrest the driver. Eastern Cape Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha applauded the officer for her 'act of bravery and absolute patriotism', putting public safety over personal gain. He said her actions would save lives. History of crashes 'The N10 road has seen a lot of crashes involving trucks with defects like this one, not only claiming lives, but also resulting in lengthy road closures,' Binqose said. In February 2024, a traffic officer, Sisanda Hadi, was knocked over and killed when she tried to pull over a manganese truck at the Kinkelbos weighbridge on the N2. In September 2023, about 17km before Cookhouse, a manganese carrier crashed into the vehicle of Middelburg businessman Calla Perry, killing him. The number of heavy trucks on the N10 passing Cradock has increased from 5,795 in 2021/22 to an estimated 15,000 trucks in the 2023/2024 financial year, according to information provided by Nqatha to the Eastern Cape Legislature. Manganese is transported by truck from mines in the Northern Cape and exported, mainly through the Port of Port Elizabeth in Gqeberha, where Transnet houses its main export facility for manganese in South Africa. In the past month, there have been at least two serious incidents involving heavy trucks on the N10. Two weeks ago, authorities had to struggle for eight hours to clear the wreckage and reopen the route after the N10 between Cookhouse and Nxuba [Cradock] was closed following a head-on collision involving two trucks. Last year, Nqatha said spot checks along the N10 were part of a road safety strategy. 'Corridor operations are conducted every month in collaboration with Northern Cape, focusing on heavy road freight. Multidisciplinary roadblocks are also conducted each quarter, focusing on heavy trucks. 'Traffic officers are deployed on a daily basis to patrol the N9 and N10, routes the heavy trucks are travelling. Speed measuring is conducted in certain spots on the N9 and N10 routes,' Nqatha said in response to a question in the Eastern Cape Legislature. DM
