Texans Kamari Lassiter sneaks onto Pro Football Focus' top 32 CBs list for 2025
Kamari Lassiter set the tone for No. 2 cornerbacks during his rookie season with the Houston Texans. Some could argue he was the top rookie defensive back after shutting down quality No. 2 receivers like Chicago's Rome Odunze and Los Angeles' Quinten Johnston in the playoffs.
Does Pro Football Focus agree? Not entirely. While the former second-round pick made the list of the top 32 cornerbacks in the league for this fall, he appeared at No. 31, just one spot higher than Dallas Cowboys star Daron Bland.
"There were several great rookie seasons in 2024, and Lassiter's was arguably right behind those of Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell," PFF's John Kosko wrote. "He ranked third among rookies in PFF advanced coverage grade and 15th among all cornerbacks. He also led the NFL with a 45.2% completion rate allowed."
Drafted 42nd overall last season, Lassiter arguably was the best rookie defender in his class. According to The 33rd team, from Week 9 on, the former Georgia standout did not allow more than 50 yards in coverage in a game. He also forced two interceptions, a 50% completion rate and only gave up 21.7 yards per outing.
In 16 games, Lassiter totaled three interceptions, a safety, 10 pass breakups and only allowed a 54.4% completion rating. He and third-round pick Calen Bullock became staples in coverage, helping Houston win a second straight AFC South division title and postseason victory.
Philadelphia's Cooper DeJean ranked 11th and led all rookie cornerbacks while his teammate, Quinyon Mitchell, ranked inside the top 20 at No. 16.
The Texans open the regular season on the road against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium on Sept. 7.

New York Giants' receivers ranked in bottom third of NFL

The New York Giants did little to change their wide receiver room this offseason, largely returning the same unit from a year ago. General manager Joe Schoen re-signed Darius Slayton and Ihmir Smith-Marsette, while adding Lil'Jordan Humphrey and several undrafted free agents. That was the extent of the work done. Also returning will be Wan'Dale Robinson, Bryce Ford-Wheaton, and Jalin Hyatt, who appears bulked up and recommitted to the game of football. Similarly, the tight end and running back rooms will look similar, save for the additions of Thomas Fidone and Cam Skattebo, who were taken in the 2025 NFL draft. All told, Pro Football Focus remains unimpressed, ranking the Giants' receivers in the bottom third of the NFL at No. 24 overall. The Giants' passing attack isn't just Malik Nabers, but he represents the biggest piece of the pie. Nabers earned an 87.1 PFF receiving grade as a rookie despite a terrible quarterback situation. He was the only Giants receiver to earn a single-season receiving grade higher than 65.0 in 2024. Tyrone Tracy Jr., Theo Johnson, Wan'Dale Robinson, Darius Slayton and Jalin Hyatt make up the same group from 2024, which posted a 29th-ranked 67.1 PFF receiving grade. The lack of receiver production largely stems from inconsistent quarterback play. That's one area Schoen and the Giants did address, and consequently so, signing veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston before selecting Jaxson Dart in the first round of April's draft. Better quarterback play will yield more productive receiver play, even if the roster remains largely unchanged at those positions.

Matt Leinart reveals he was nearly traded to New York Giants in 2010

In 2010, three years after they triumphed over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, the New York Giants were forced into the quarterback market. They had lost veteran David Carr to the San Francisco 49ers and needed someone to back up Eli Manning. At the time, the Giants settled on Sage Rosenfels but weren't entirely satisfied with that room. During a recent episode of Throwbacks with Matt Leinart and Jerry Ferrara, Leinart revealed that he was nearly traded from the Arizona Cardinals to the Giants to fill that role. "They were trying to trade me to the New York Football Giants... to back up Eli," Leinart said. "I ended up getting cut, and I signed with the Texans like three days later. That's when I went to Houston. "But there were conversations -- and I'm almost positive about this -- that (head coach Ken Whisenhunt) was like, 'Hey, we've been talking to the Giants about potentially trading you.' ... But yeah, it was the Giants. My agent was like, they liked me." Leinart said he preferred to be released as opposed to being traded, giving him the freedom to choose his next destination. That's exactly what happened, and he ended up with the Texans. "So, that almost happened. I was almost traded to the Giants," he said. Leinart, a first-round pick of the Cardinals in the 2006 NFL draft, spent two seasons with the Texans before a year with the Oakland Raiders. He eventually wrapped things up with the Buffalo Bills in 2013. In 33 career games (18 starts), Leinart completed 57.1 percent of his passes for 4,065 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions. The Giants, meanwhile, settled on Rosenfels and Jim Sorgi as their backups in 2010 before re-signing Carr to back up Manning in 2011. They went on to win the Super Bowl that year, again defeating the Patriots.
