Corning's pioneering glass technologies are leading the automotive industry
The subject of today's episode, Corning, isn't exactly a company that you'd normally associate with cars. If fact, when most of us think of Corning, cooking is likely the first thing that springs to mind, specifically brands such as CorningWare and Pyrex cookware. But Corning sold off that part of the business way back in 1998. When it comes to Corning these days, it's more about its products like Gorilla Glass. Do you own an iPhone? The glass is from Corning. Odds are high your Samsung Galaxy phone uses it, too. As for the tie-in with automotive, in recent years Gorilla Glass has also been famously used for both the windshield of the Jeep Wrangler and the rear window of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS.
And as you'll hear, Corning has also been thinking long and glass hard about the future of the machines that will move us from place to place, with one of the key people driving that future being the VP and GM of Corning Automotive Glass Solutions, Mike Kunigonis. So, why are we speaking to Mike? Two reasons. The recent CES introduction of Fusion5 Glass and Corning's plan to get optical fiber into passenger vehicles.

Fusion5 Glass is Corning's latest automotive glass product that's designed to better resist impacts, weigh less, and make it easier for ADAS systems to function. If you've ever had to replace a windshield, you know the cost involved, and that cost is rising. Corning claims Fusion5 can handle sharp impacts twice as well as conventional automotive glass. For a variety of reasons, not the least of which is electrification, cars are getting heavier. Saving weight any and everywhere is key, and lighter glass helps. And as cars and drivers become more and more reliant on varying levels of autonomy, any lens or sensor looking out from the inside needs to be able to see through the glass as clearly as possible.

But just as if not more exciting — at least from our admittedly geeky perspective — is Corning's push to get optical fiber into passenger vehicles. Better known as fiber optic cable (think Fios), optical fiber offers several advantages for carmakers and the resulting products. For one, weight. A single fiber optic cable could essentially replace most of the copper wiring inside a vehicle; in extreme cases like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV we're talking some 2-miles worth. Aside from weight, optical cables can also move much larger packets of data. This is crucial given that the amount of data the cars of the near future will produce, use, and transmit up to and down from the cloud is expected to grow tenfold, with 100 gigabyte data packets potentially becoming the norm. Not only will optical fiber allow this (and more), but it also has the potential to future proof cars and car design. There's an environmental angle as well — with a dramatic reduction in copper use the mining of it also lessens.

iOS 26 has a huge battery life upgrade — here's the iPhones that get it
One of our favorite new features added with the iOS 26 developer beta is Apple's new "adaptive power" mode aimed at extending the battery life of the best iPhones. Unfortunately, it looks like you'll need an iPhone 15 Pro model or newer to enjoy the benefits. In the iOS 26 developer beta, Apple describes adaptive power mode as a way for your iPhone to make 'small performance adjustments to extend your battery life,' such as by lowering screen brightness and 'allowing some activities to take a little longer.' When the setting's enabled, your phone will automatically trim its energy use to keep it going longer between charges. Adaptive power mode is different from the iPhone's existing low power mode, which restricts background activities and automatically kicks in when your battery reaches 20 percent. As confirmed in a weekend MacRumors report, the feature is only available on the iPhone 15 Pro phones and iPhone 16 series. While iOS 26 is compatible with phones as old as the iPhone 11, adaptive power mode is powered by artificial intelligence, so it's only enabled on phones capable of running Apple Intelligence. Below you can find a full list of iPhone models capable of running the new adaptive power mode in iOS 26: Adaptive Power is enabled by default in the iOS 26 developer beta, but you can also find it alongside Low Power Mode in the Battery > Power Mode section of the Settings menu. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman first reported that Apple was working on an AI-powered battery optimization feature last month. At the time, Gurman said the feature will use the 'battery data it has collected from users' devices' to figure out which apps to trim power consumption from. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Adaptive power mode could prove especially useful for the iPhone 17 Air, Apple's rumored ultra-thin handset. Leaks suggest it could come with a measly 2,800 mAh — 1,100 mAh less than the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge. Between this new setting and rumors that Apple will employ a new silicon carbon battery to boost battery density by as much as 15%, Apple may be able to squeeze out an impressively long battery life in the iPhone 17 Air's slim chassis. On the best Android phones, Google has a similar adaptive power feature that employs AI to predict your app usage and restricts the ones you don't visit as often from running in the background, thus using up precious battery life in the process. Over time, Adaptive Battery learns which apps are the worst drains on your phone's battery and limits some of their functions. That way, your phone's battery doesn't drain as much when it's left idle. iOS 26 remains in beta for now as Apple plans to roll out the full update sometime in the fall. It's rumored to add exciting new updates to the Camera and Photos apps as well as Apple Intelligence-powered live translation for text messages and calls.

Apple iPhone 17 Series Will Showcase ‘Design Revamp', New Report Claims
When Apple releases the iPhone 17 series, we already know it will come with the Liquid Glass software design overhaul announced at WWDC. Now, a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman talks about the hardware and how much of a change it will be. Apple iPhone 16 Pro: are the iPhones about to get a design revamp? There have been reports of faster-charging iPhones, good and bad news about display properties and display sizes, a thicker-than-ever iPhone 17 Pro Max, a curious design detail on the iPhone 17 Air, and worries about that phone's battery life, to name just a few. But now, industry heavyweight Gurman has more details of what's coming. In his weekly Power On newsletter, in answer to a question of whether this year's iPhone is considered a redesign, he answered, 'Yes.' So, there we have it. No, wait, there's more. 'Within Apple, this year's iPhone lineup is considered an industrial design revamp compared to the iPhone 16 Pro Max, for instance. That includes the new skinnier iPhone 17 'Air' model, as well as Pro versions with a redesigned back and camera area,' Gurman says. Note the quote marks around 'Air,' presumably because Apple hasn't confirmed such a name and so it's subject to change. 'From the front, the new phones won't look much different than recent models,' he adds. Since the phones are almost all-screen with thin bezels, that's not such a surprise, though Gurman is saying there's no change to the iPhone's Dynamic Island, as he refers to this. 'The Pro changes on the rear are certainly noticeable. In any case, these tweaks are just a stepping stone toward next year's upgrades. That's when Apple will shrink the Dynamic Island, moving closer to a screen that truly covers the entire front of the phone, and roll out a foldable model. More changes will come in 2027, as I've earlier reported, with a Pro model redesign tied to the iPhone's 20-year anniversary,' he concludes. There's a lot of detail there, particularly about the all-screen iPhone coming in more than two years' time, even if we might have hoped for more concrete information about this fall's look. And there's no mention of whether or not ProMotion will be on the new iPhone 17, or exactly how the camera area will change, though other analysts have consistently reported a wider panel on the phone's rear. Or will the Pro Max be called the iPhone 17 Ultra? I'll report back as more information leaks.

Before iOS 26, Here's What Apple Could Bring to Your iPhone With iOS 18.6
Before Apple releases iOS 26 this fall, the company will release iOS 18.6, and the first public beta of iOS 18.6 just became available on June 18. While iOS 26 will bring a major redesign to iPhones, the latest beta is filled with bug and security fixes, so developers and beta testers shouldn't expect new features. Because this isn't the final version of iOS 18.6, the update might be buggy, and battery life may be affected, so it's best to keep those troubles off your primary device. Note that the beta is not the final version of iOS 18.6, so more features could land on your iPhone when it is released. It's unclear when Apple will release iOS 18.6 to the general public. However, it will likely be the last significant iOS update the company releases before it makes iOS 26 available this fall. Here's what to expect from iOS 18.6 when it lands on your iPhone. This beta is all about security patches and squashing bugs If you're a developer or beta tester, don't expect much from this beta other than bug and security fixes. After downloading and looking into iOS 18.6 beta 1, I found no new features or noticeable changes. And that's not surprising considering Apple's iOS release schedule over the years. Apple announced iOS 18 at WWDC 2024 and released iOS 17.6 more than a month later in July. That update was filled with more than 30 important bug fixes and security patches, but no new features. Apple recommended that everyone download the update at the time, and it was the last major iOS 17 update before the release of iOS 18. Apple did the same thing in July 2023 when it released iOS 16.6. When the tech giant released that update, it was focused on bug fixes and security patches; the next major iOS release was iOS 17. Apple is likely shifting gears and focusing more on iOS 26. In fact, the company has already released two developer betas of that iOS software in preparation for its fall release. There will be more betas before iOS 18.6 is released to the public, so there's plenty of time for Apple to add features or change others -- but I wouldn't count on new features. Apple has not announced when it will release iOS 18.6, but since iOS 17.6 and iOS 16.6 were both released in July of 2024 and 2023, respectively, I expect Apple to release iOS 18.6 next month.
