Faisal's lawyers urge authorities to keep hunting 'acid assailant'
KUALA LUMPUR: Faisal Halim's lawyers insist that identifying the perpetrator of the horrific acid attack on the national footballer should be the priority, ahead of other legal matters.
Their statement came after the Attorney-General's Department classified the case that shocked the nation as "No Further Action" (NFA).
Faisal's lawyers — Haijan Omar and Nik Zarith Nik Moustpha — were informed that despite exhaustive efforts by the police, no suspects have been identified or linked to the case.
Understandably, this has left the Selangor star and his teammates frustrated.
"Before we consider suing or taking any action against any party, the most important issue is the perpetrator. We must identify who the perpetrator is before we can consider the next steps," said Haijan, who added that the current focus is not on any organisation or agency, but solely on the individual responsible for the attack.
Haijan also reminded the public not to speculate irresponsibly on the case, warning that such actions could have legal consequences.
"Don't make speculations, we have the law. If you speculate without basis, the law will come after you," said Haijan.
Haijan said that while NFA decisions are not uncommon in cases lacking strong evidence, the high-profile nature of this case has drawn more attention.
"It's just that in this case, the victim is Faisal Halim, a national football player, that's why it's more visible," added Haijan.
Nik Zarith lauded Faisal for his courageous comeback from the acid attack.
"We understand this must have been a traumatic experience for him. But if we look at his progress, in less than a year he's already back on the field," added Nik Zarith.

PETALING JAYA: Lawyers for Naimah Khalid, the widow of former finance minister Daim Zainuddin, have expressed disappointment with the move to classify her police report against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki as requiring no further action (NFA). The report, filed last September, was related to a Bloomberg article concerning MACC's investigations into Daim before his death on November 13. Lawyers Rajesh Nagarajan and Sachpreetraj Singh Sohanpal said they received a letter dated June 21 informing them that the case had been classified as NFA. 'The decision is unacceptable, outrageous and contrary to good governance and the rule of law,' they said in a statement today. They also noted that the NFA decision came shortly after Naimah filed a complaint with the Independent Police Conduct Commission over what she viewed as delays in investigating her original report. 'No details have been given of who was questioned, what steps were taken, or the reasons for the NFA,' they said. 'This decision reflects badly on the police and Attorney-General's Chambers, and confirms the erosion of institutional independence under the Madani administration. Citing sources, Bloomberg reported that Azam had told agency officials that instructions to investigate Daim, as well as former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his sons, came from Anwar himself. Naimah said the Bloomberg report showed that the charges against her and Daim were a conspiracy to target Anwar's political opponents by 'subverting the institutions of state and enforcement bodies'. Both the Prime Minister's Office and MACC have denied the claims in the Bloomberg report. Daim was charged in January last year with failing to declare assets to MACC, including interests in 38 companies, 19 land plots in five states, six properties, two unit trust accounts, and seven luxury vehicles. After his death last November, the prosecution withdrew the charges and the court granted an order discharging and acquitting him. However, the anti-graft agency said that investigations under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act would proceed. Melaka Tengah police chief Christopher Patit said the duo, aged 24 and 31, were arrested in Kuala Kurau, Perak, on June 4. 'On May 28, police received two reports involving a housebreaking and robbery in the Melaka Tengah district linked to the couple, who are both unemployed. 'Their modus operandi included targeting homestays and stealing various electrical appliances and furniture from the premises,' he said in a statement today. Initial investigations found that they were involved in three housebreaking and robbery cases in Melaka Tengah, and four more in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Various items, including electrical appliances, household furniture, a gold bracelet, two cars, five pawnshop receipts, and five mobile phones were seized. He said investigations are ongoing, and the case is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking and Section 392 of the Penal Code for robbery. In a separate development, he said a clothing dealer was arrested for allegedly firing a shot with an air pistol at Jalan Johor, Semabok, on June 8. 'Following intelligence gathering and public tip-off, the 35-year-old suspect was arrested in Puchong, Selangor, on June 17. Police also seized a black bag, a silver-black air pistol bearing the inscription Pietro Beretta Gardone V.T., a speed loader, and 30 ball-bearing bullets. The suspect has been remanded for seven days until June 23 to assist in the investigation under Section 33 of the Arms Act 1960 and Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief. The case is still under investigation, and he urged the public not to speculate, as it could interfere with the ongoing probe.
