Calling all cinephiles – the fourth edition of Arab Cinema Week is back at Cinema Akil, everyone's favourite independent arthouse cinema and the go-to spot for alternative watching.
This iconic celebration of the very best of regional cinema started off as a small spark and has now become an annual staple on the city's cultural calendar. The festival kicks off from today, May 2 to 11 and will take you through an incredible journey through the cinematic landscape of the Arab world.
The line-up for this season, as is every year, is a mix of bold, creative, and versatile stories from around the region. 10 days of the event will feature 10 feature films, 6 Gulf Premieres, 3 UAE Premieres, and stories from 10 Arab countries including Lebanon, Sudan, UAE, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Iraq, Qatar, Jordan and Syria.
As always, there is a huge focus on highlighting strong female talent, with almost half of the films on the line-up being directed by women, preserving the efforts of Cinema Akil in spotlighting Arab women behind and in front of the camera.
The festival will kick off with Three by Emirati director Nayla Al Khaja; this tale of possession, exorcism, skepticism and belief pulls from many local narratives of forces beyond the boundary of our understanding and not all of them good.
There will also be a mix of 5 in-person and virtual Q&As, giving us, the viewers, a chance to connect with the brains behind the stunning visual spectacles. Tickets and things…

Sharjah Ruler attends SPAA's third batch graduation ceremony
In his speech, His Highness warmly welcomed the graduates, who come from various Arab countries, stretching from Mauritania to Oman. His Highness highlighted their remarkable talents and hard work, referring to them as exceptional individuals. His Highness also acknowledged the dedication of the academy's staff, emphasizing their commitment to helping students succeed. Looking ahead, His Highness announced an exciting development: starting in September, the academy will launch a new College of Music, welcoming students from across the Arab world. His Highness assured that students will be supported and embraced in the Emirate of Sharjah, close to their families. His Highness shared details about the exciting new program at the Sharjah Performing Arts Academy that focuses on filmmaking. His Highness pointed out that creating this program is quite a challenge. Once it's established, the academy will have three main areas of study: Theatre, Music, and Cinema. His Highness expressed his pride in these initiatives, highlighting how they support the arts and the people who create them. His Highness, "This knowledge is a knowledge that can change many errors, whether in nations or individuals. Thank God, we are proceeding with very calm steps. We do not set foot in a place where there is error, but rather we are correcting this person who will carry the knowledge and who must be upright." His Highness congratulated the graduates on their graduation from the Academy and extended his congratulations to their families on this joyous occasion. Dr. Peter Barlow, the Executive Director of the Sharjah Performing Arts Academy, delivered a speech welcoming His Highness and the attendees at the third graduation ceremony. He praised His Highness for his vision and efforts, which have significantly contributed to the advancement of the Academy. Dr. Barlow also highlighted His Highness's commitment to education, which has enhanced the arts in the Emirate of Sharjah and inspired thousands of its residents. He emphasized that true progress is rooted in knowledge, compassion, and the preservation of cultural heritage. Barlow spoke about the important work being done by the President of the Sharjah Performing Arts Academy in the field of education. He described Sharjah as a shining example of academic excellence, home to a large university city with more than 40,000 students. Barlow emphasized that education in Sharjah is top-notch and accessible to everyone, covering learning from preschool all the way to postgraduate studies. He noted that the focus on education goes beyond just what happens in classrooms. It's about sparking curiosity, encouraging creativity, and nurturing a sense of responsibility in the young people of today. He also highlighted that the love for the performing arts shows the President's commitment to creating a bright future in areas like theater, scriptwriting, and artistic performances. The Executive Director of the Sharjah Performing Arts Academy expressed deep appreciation for the strong support from His Highness. This backing has played a crucial role in the Academy's achievements in arts, technology, and education, all while being guided by highly skilled teachers. He highlighted that the Academy offers students excellent chances to grow, be creative, and build successful careers in the arts. Impressively, 90% of the Academy's graduates are working in creative fields, both in the local area and around the world. Barlow also thanked the Academy's faculty and staff for their dedication and tireless efforts, emphasizing that they not only create artists, but also creative leaders with ethics and vision. He spoke to the graduates, reflecting on their time at the academy. He said, "You have transformed from newcomers into skilled professionals. Along the way, you have dealt with challenges, setbacks, and moments of difficulty, but you have also found success. You've learned from amazing teachers, received support from the dedicated staff, and benefited from the help of the technical team. You have developed and flourished in a place that fostered your growth and encouraged excellence." He said, "You have learned and grown in your skills, and now you are about to enter a new world filled with unknowns. This world is not your enemy; rather, it will teach you. You don't have a clear plan to follow, and there are no guarantees. Instead, you face the biggest challenge of all: creating something from nothing. If you succeed, you will experience the true joy of achievement. Be flexible, come up with new ideas, and keep pushing forward. If you think the journey will be easy, this may not be the right path for you. You will encounter difficulties, some of which you cannot control. Don't limit yourselves and don't hold on to resentments. Learn to forgive yourself and others. Stay positive, because a hopeful attitude helps you handle life's challenges better." During the ceremony, artist Zainab Al Askari gave a heartfelt speech as the guest of honor. She expressed her joy and excitement about being part of such a prestigious event that celebrates upcoming artists. The occasion was made even more special by the attendance of His Highness, the President of the Sharjah Academy of Performing Arts. Al Askari highlighted that the Academy has made a long-awaited dream come true for artists who want to develop their skills and share important messages with society. In a time when the world of art faces various challenges, she stressed how vital it is to have such an academy. She also acknowledged the support and care that His Highness offers to artists, helping them grow and shine. This initiative has been a cherished aspiration that has finally become reality in Sharjah. She wrapped up her speech by thanking everyone for their warm welcome and the hard work put in by the academy's organizers. They have done a great job in helping artists improve their skills and showcasing unique talents in the arts. She also shared her happiness about being part of such a wonderful event. His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah distributed certificates to the graduates, amidst the joy of their families and guardians. His Highness also took a group photo with the graduates.

Roll out the red carpet for we have a new chip on the block. CHAR is the latest venture by homegrown, Emirati-owned concept Around The Block, known and loved for its high-quality, handcrafted specialty coffee and a new avatar with every opening. The latest transformation is all about flames and fire-fuelled flavours, drawing inspiration from global classics and pairing it with a Dubai story. Located in the brand new Nad Al Sheba Mall, the space offers, a sleek, minimal experience, stripped down to bare brown tiles, smooth wooden furniture, low yellow lighting and the centre of all the action – the exposed grill, firing up your dishes for you. The grilled varieties come from all parts of the world, incorporating Asian and Middle Eastern influences – perhaps the hotbeds of open-flame cooking. Think chicken shawarma, chicken tikka, tenderloin, sea bass and more, all flame-kissed and served with a variety of cold plates and sides designed to complement the depth of smoke and char with bright, light flavours. Everything is bold, refreshing, rich and packs an indulgent punch. What's new? The space functions in a unique way – by day it is the Around The Block we all know and love, serving specialty coffees, comfort dining and that light, daytime atmosphere. UAE strengthens global publishing ties at Beijing Book Fair
This participation in Asia's largest copyrights exchange platform—and the second largest book fair in the world—reflects the EPA's ongoing commitment to empowering Emirati publishers, expanding opportunities for international collaboration, and strengthening the UAE's presence on the global publishing stage. Showcasing diversity and vision The EPA's stand at the fair serves as a vibrant window into the UAE's dynamic publishing landscape, showcasing a unique blend of seasoned expertise and emerging voices in children's literature and educational publishing. Among the participants are publishers who graduated from the 'Onshur' programme—an initiative launched to empower the next generation of publishing entrepreneurs in the UAE by empowering them with professional and technical support. Featured publishers include Hamda Al Baloushi, Manager of Aalamkom Publishing and Distribution, and Treasurer and Board Member of the EPA, Salim Abdulrahman, Managing Director of AlRewaya Publishing, and Ghassan Rabih, representative of Dar Rabie Publishing. Representing the 'Onshur' graduates are Dr. Asmaa Emara, Founder of Dal for Publishing, a publishing house dedicated to innovative approaches to Arabic language education, and Fatema Al Hammadi, Founder of Sohub Publishing and Distribution, which specialises in educational content for people of determination and students with autism. Bridging culture through publishing Running from 18 to 22 June, the Association's programme at the fair features a series of high-level events uniting content creators and publishing professionals from the UAE and China. A key event on the agenda is the 2025 Global Children's Book Forum, centred on the theme 'Integrated Innovation in Children's Books Amid New Realities.' Through this platform, the Association highlighted UAE's pioneering contributions to the global book industry, particularly in advancing children's publishing and fostering a culture of reading among young minds. The event agenda also features a panel discussion titled 'Nurturing Young Minds: Children's Publishing Priorities in the UAE and China,' with participation from publishers, Hamda Al Baloushi and Ghassan Rabih, alongside a group of distinguished Chinese children's publishers. Global messages with a local spirit Commenting on the Association's participation, Rashid Al Kous, Executive Director of the EPA, emphasised that the EPA's presence at major international book fairs represents a strategic opportunity for copyrights exchange, expanding professional networks, and exploring new markets for Emirati and Arabic content. He stated: 'This year, we placed special focus on the UAE's experience in children's publishing—a field that conveys universal messages with a distinctly local spirit, led by young publishers who possess clear vision and genuine passion. By empowering them, we are laying the foundation for a new generation that embodies innovation and authenticity.' He further noted: 'Our participation in the Beijing International Book Fair is an extension of the UAE's broader vision to support creative industries—particularly publishing—as a vital tool for knowledge dissemination and cultural dialogue. Each international platform is an opportunity to project our cultural voice globally and to showcase the wealth of creative potential that the UAE holds. The presence of 'Onshur' graduates at an event of this calibre sends a clear message: the youth are a powerful force shaping the future of Emirati publishing.' Publisher Hamda Al Baloushi described her participation as a significant milestone in her professional journey, highlighting the opportunity it provided for engagement and exchange with publishers from around the world. She added that it had opened new avenues for collaboration and copyrights exchange, particularly in the Asian market. She said: 'Our presence here not only reflects the quality of Emirati content, but also the prominent status that the UAE publishing sector has achieved on the global stage. I am proud to be part of this movement and to represent the UAE at one of the world's most important cultural events.'
