The Thunder had one more opponent after winning the NBA title. The champagne corks were formidable

Associated Press OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma City Thunder had just won the NBA championship, the on-court ceremony was over and they were heading to the locker room to start the party. This typically includes the traditional spraying of champagne all over everyone and everything. And the Thunder were ready to partake in all that. 'Where's the champagne at?' some yelled on their way into the room. It was ready. Problem was, the Thunder were not. See, the Thunder are young, the youngest NBA champion in nearly a half-century. And, well, it turns out that most players had absolutely no idea how to pop the corks. 'None of us knew how to do it," center Isaiah Hartenstein said, revealing that some players — yes, moments after winning the NBA title — were going onto YouTube in search of tutorials for how to make the bubbles fly. Enter Thunder guard Alex Caruso, who has already won an NBA title. The oldest player on the team, at 31, showed everyone how to get it done. And eventually, they got it right. 'We didn't do it all at the same time until, like, the third try," Caruso said. "I tried my best.' In time, they all figured it out. It was the last lesson of many this season for the Thunder, who finished with 84 wins — tying for the third-most in NBA history. And the team could have all of its key players back next season; they're all under contract. So, if the Thunder find a way to go back-to-back, Caruso expects the locker room celebration to go a bit more smoothly in 2026. 'We'll get some rest, reset, try to go again next year and see if we can do it again," Caruso said. "We'll be better. We'll be better next year.' ___ AP NBA: recommended

Diamondbacks to Sign McCann after Moreno Hits IL

Diamondbacks to Sign McCann after Moreno Hits IL originally appeared on Athlon Sports. James McCann wasn't getting a shot to make the Atlanta Braves' roster. So the longtime MLB catcher was granted his release in order to sign a big-league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to a report from Ken Rosenthal. Advertisement McCann, who has played 11 seasons in the bigs, will join the Diamondbacks after Arizona put starting catcher Gabriel Moreno on the injuried list because of a finger fracture. Moreno is expected to miss a few weeks. In comes McCann. He will likely share plate duties with Arizona's usual No. 2 catcher, Jose Herrera. The former offers more with the bat, though. McCann, 35, was slashing .297/.333/.493 with six home runs in 41 games with Triple-A Gwinnett. He was blocked from the majors by former All-Star Sean Murphy and potential Rookie of the Year Drake Baldwin. Over his 919 games in the majors, McCann is a career .241 hitter with 92 home runs. He last played in the MLB in 2024, logging 233 plate appearances with the Baltimore Orioles. From 2015 to 2021, McCann was the primary catcher for the Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox and New York Mets. With the Mets, he ceded the No. 1 role to Francisco Alvarez, who the Mets demoted to Triple-A on Sunday. Advertisement Herrera carries an OPS of .562 over his 31 games with the Diamondbacks this year, his fourth with the club, all as a reserve. Arizona heads into Monday at 39-38, eight games behind National League West-leading Los Angeles and 3 1/2 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the final NL Wild Card spot. Mexico wins CONCACAF Gold Cup group after 0-0 draw against Costa Rica

Associated Press LAS VEGAS (AP) — Mexico tied Costa Rica 0-0 on Sunday night to win Group A of the CONCACAF Gold Cup and will play Saudi Arabia in the quarterfinals. Mexico's Santiago Gimenez appeared to score on a bicycle kick in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time but the goal was disallowed by Guatemalan referee Mario Escobar following a video review. Giménez appeared to be offside when Carlos Rodríguez lofted the ball into the penalty area following a free kick. Orlando Galo's headed clearance attempt went in front of the goal to Giménez. Mexico, unbeaten in 10 Gold Cup matches against Costa Rica, finished even with the Ticos at seven points but won the group on goal difference. El Tri, which defeated the Dominican Republic and Suriname in their first two matches, will play Saudi Arabia next weekend while the Costa Ricans will face the United States. Costa Rica will be missing four regular starters. Forward Manfred Ugalde, who has three goals in the tournament, and midfielder Carlos Mora are suspended for yellow-card accumulation. Defender Ariel Lassiter has a fractured left hand and forward Warren Madrigal a broken left leg. ___ AP soccer: in this topic
