WASHINGTON (AP) — James Wood hit a two-run double over center fielder Alek Thomas in a three-run first inning and Josh Bell tripled for the third time since 2022, helping the Washington Nationals beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3 Saturday to stop a four-game losing streak.
Mitchell Parker (2-0) allowed one run, two hits and four walks over six innings and Kyle Finnegan got his second save, giving up Thomas' RBI single. Catcher Riley Adams caught Thomas attempting to steal second base for the final out.
Second baseman Tim Tawa, called up by Arizona after Ketel Marte's hamstring injury, was 1 for 3 in his major league debut. Tawa, who turns 26 on Monday, singled to left in his first at-bat leading off the third, walked in the sixth and scored in Randal Grichuk's single, then hit into a run-scoring forceout in the seventh.
Diamondbacks starter Eduardo Rodriguez (0-1) allowed four runs and five hits in five innings, striking out 12 for the first time since Sept. 14, 2019, for Boston against the Philadelphia.

Enter Thunder guard Alex Caruso, who has already won an NBA title. The oldest player on the team, at 31, showed everyone how to get it done. And eventually, they got it right. 'We didn't do it all at the same time until, like, the third try," Caruso said. "I tried my best.' In time, they all figured it out. It was the last lesson of many this season for the Thunder, who finished with 84 wins — tying for the third-most in NBA history. And the team could have all of its key players back next season; they're all under contract. So, if the Thunder find a way to go back-to-back, Caruso expects the locker room celebration to go a bit more smoothly in 2026. So the longtime MLB catcher was granted his release in order to sign a big-league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to a report from Ken Rosenthal. Advertisement McCann, who has played 11 seasons in the bigs, will join the Diamondbacks after Arizona put starting catcher Gabriel Moreno on the injuried list because of a finger fracture. Moreno is expected to miss a few weeks. In comes McCann. He will likely share plate duties with Arizona's usual No. 2 catcher, Jose Herrera. The former offers more with the bat, though. McCann, 35, was slashing .297/.333/.493 with six home runs in 41 games with Triple-A Gwinnett. He was blocked from the majors by former All-Star Sean Murphy and potential Rookie of the Year Drake Baldwin. Over his 919 games in the majors, McCann is a career .241 hitter with 92 home runs. He last played in the MLB in 2024, logging 233 plate appearances with the Baltimore Orioles. From 2015 to 2021, McCann was the primary catcher for the Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox and New York Mets. With the Mets, he ceded the No. 1 role to Francisco Alvarez, who the Mets demoted to Triple-A on Sunday.
